Why so much hate on MN?

An opinion on a forum like mumsnet is talking about whether a work colleague is getting too close to your husband or not. Saying there are too many 'forreners' in the country is not an opinion, it is hate speech. And if this government actually believed in what it espoused they would be drafting up legislation as we speak to give police the powers to prosecute people in the same manner that they would if they decided to go on some hate rampage against gay people.

It seems that most of the 'political' posters assume that "Brexit was bad" which can be debated but they go further in asserting that everyone who voted for Brexit is a twat or mentally deficient and they keep on saying these things and worse to be deliberately insulting as if that helps to strengthen their argument.
You have opinions so do we.

Anti-immigration rhetoric should not be tolerated anywhere, least of all a public forum for anyone to view. It's not an 'opinion' its hate pure and simple and the government needs to clamp down on it, if nobody else will.

Having been on the reseaving end of true nastiness to the point of thinking of doing something stupid I disagree.

I agree about the certain type of person who thinks like that and believes they are unquestioningly correct, but I suspect that these days, there are far more of them on the right than the left.

By the way, it is possible to be left-leaning and not be woke. Still, I'd rather be called left wing and woke than be right wing and racist.😁

"Hate" is a word that is used in online discourse to avoid having to recognise anger.

Because if you acknowledge someone is angry, you acknowledge there's a reason they feel as they do. You may disagree with that reason vehemently, but you recognise there is a reason and you have to know what it is before you can dismiss it.

Whereas "hate" - well that's just irrational, just blind emotion. You can dismiss "hatred" without ever asking a single question.

I don't think blocking posters is a good idea. Echo chambers don't help anyone's understanding. Whole boards fine, whole threads maybe, but not specific perspectives. Very slippery slope that.

Coincidental that an influx of posters arrived at the same time? I've seen it before and have been on the receiving end. I can handle myself but others might not be able to.

@NormasArse , there was an interesting article in today’s Telegraph on that very subject if you can access it, it’s a good read. I hadn’t realised that the term was initially utilised by the left to describe themselves.
I once saw a post here from someone asking what is ‘our’ position on a particular issue. I find that incredibly sad the poor soul was desperate to know the ‘right’ way to think. We should all be able to listen to as many different opinions and perspectives as we can and then make up our own minds what we think. I tend to think there is a certain type of person (not necessarily on the left of politics but often) who just adopts whatever the current group think is without much actual thought. These people very much consider themselves to be morally superior and that their views are unquestionably correct. There are a few videos I’ve seen of American college students being interviewed after having protested and chanted ‘from the river to the sea etc. When asked which river and sea they are talking about they are clueless. That sort of thing. Woke.
