Why so much hate on MN?

Oncetwicethreetimesmore · 21/09/2026 18:44

@MNHQ
Why so much hate on MN?
Posters hiding behind complaints about the government, presenting themselves as reasonable actors, to push hate about asylum seekers, people with disabilities, benefit claimants..Mostly the same names all day everyday.
I am told to report - MN just not interested.
I am told to hide the thread..
Why isn't moderation better?
I know this will always exist and exists on other platforms but MN makes no effort to even try to anything about it.
You can't really sell MN as a caring, supportive site with all this stuff offered on a daily basis in active.

OP posts:

You are not a solitary poster, and I wholeheartedly agree with you about the inconsistency and quality of the moderation.

Absolutely Mrs B.

TemperanceWest · 22/09/2026 13:45

@dreamiesformolly that is a good post and I agree with you.

Perhaps the way forward for those of us who object to the racism, ageism, ableism and other hate on MN is simply not to not engage with those threads. Let them become echo chambers of hate or end up like one thread did with the OP mainly alone on it, reduced to pasting link after link and even resorting to tagging individuals who had left the thread in an attempt to reel them back in.

But it is also hard to resist the urge to counter the hateful stuff that is posted. So...

I completely agree with you, OP. And what's really been getting up my nose recently is the inconsistency (and possible subjectivity?) of moderation.

Certain sentiments that a lot of people wouldn't consider too terrible routinely get deleted, meanwhile a post last weekend saying (seriously, not in sarcasm) bring back the workhouses and maybe we have to get used to seeing children starving in the streets is allowed to stand because it 'isn't breaking Talk guidelines'. (Personally I think Talk guidelines have been in dire need of an overhaul for a long time now.) Older/disabled people are being subjected to outright bile, ableism and ageism are running rife and much of it is allowed to stand. And that's before I even get started on the trans stuff. And leaving the site on principle is routinely jeered at as 'flouncing'. Says a lot. I honestly believe that certain people (humans, not bots, depressingly) are on MN solely to spout hate, whatever their warped reasons for doing this may be.

Feeling very disillusioned with Mumsnet in general at present, in other words, and probably won't be on the site much longer, one way or another. Obviously MN and its admin team aren't going to care about a solitary poster and I don't expect them to, but I predict many departures if things continue as they are. I guess it's up to MNHQ whether they're happy for the toxicity to spread and MN to become not much more than a couple of steps above a hate site. Personally it saddens me.

This may get deleted, but if it does I really don't care at this point. I'd certainly consider my point proven if it was, though.

Here we go again...

You seem to be proving her point.

Also, how original you are. Yet another of the almost daily "MN users are hateful" thread.

Whisperwaves · 21/09/2026 21:30

You wouldn't be trying to get this discussion shut down by any chance?

One of the prolific posters gets extra kicks by winding people up and then reporting their posts. They boast about it.

myjamisbetterthanyours · 22/09/2026 12:13

gamerchick · 21/09/2026 22:57

Yeah get rid of name changing. I'd be well up for that.

Absolutely not.

Some posters use AI in ways that are quite creepy.

Thezookeepersneice · 22/09/2026 11:40

I’ve tentatively dipped my toes back into Mumsnet and been shocked by how vitriolic and sneering so many posts are. I’m glad other people have noticed it too. I don’t know if it’s indicative of the low standard of politucal
discourse generally, or if it’s a few bots seeking to sew division and then genuine posters picking up on and inadvertently replicating the same tone, but it’s a shame because it completely stifles any genuine good faith discussion or debate.

So since all the Jewish people you talk to (and apparently you know whether everyone you talk to is Jewish, and what their views on Gaza are) any Jewish people with different opinions must not really be Jewish?

TemperanceWest · 22/09/2026 11:16

EasternStandard · 22/09/2026 10:56

There’s been threads like this before and mnhq have said all the everyone I disagree with is a bot line is misplaced.

But your particular issue seems to be about one group of people.

I don't think anyone claims "everyone I disagree with" is a bot. I don't agree with you on many things, but I don't think you are a bot.

However there are bots and trolls on MN as there are on any social media. MNHQ has never denied that. What MNHQ has said is they don't think there is bot activity on a large scale.

DreamieWhat · 22/09/2026 11:15

We either have free speech or we don't.

That's the bottom line.

And what can be deemed 'hate speech' is often just an opinion that clashes with far left ideology (such as women not having penises or men not being allowed to partake in womens sports - both those things aren touted as hateful by many)

So we need to allow all opinions how ever uncomfortable they may make us (as long as they are not inciting violence or encouraging physical harm to people)

Words are not violence. Opinions are not violence.

And we seem to be losing the ability to accept that our own views can (and should) be challenged in order to mentally grow and learn. An echochamber is not a place in which you can grow.

Charlie Kirk was murdered for encouraging debate and standing by his opinions.

Censorship is a very dangerous tool.

And I am disabled, bisexual and Christian btw! And I do not think that people's opinions about any of those things should be silenced, negative or not.

I think if you said ‘apparent x’ about any other ethnicity you’d probably be deleted. Idk why you think it’s ok for just one group. It’s your language that is problematic.

It literally happens whenever there is a thread where politics or a war involved. As I said in my first post.

You are highlighting the apoplectic approach, however, and we aren't even on one of those threads.

You brought up a specific group of people on this thread.

Well we have seen plenty of Russians posting on here, so why would any other war be different in tactics? Very naive to imagine this site is full of women in pinnies by the sink.

JaneJeffer · 22/09/2026 10:54

And now we have an example here of the kind of thing that happens when it is clear what someone means but they get ganged up on by several posters pretending not to know and accusing them of meaning something else entirely.

SmallDFartyCarNRG · 22/09/2026 10:53

Easy. If you want to name change you have to close your account and open another. And make it impossible to use the initial username again. It’s well known that some posters switch names between threads.

That's very naive.

The main purpose of name changing isn't to take retrospective action after one has been abused by another poster online. It's to avoid risks spilling over into real life.

People often want to ask for or give potentially sensitive advice, or indeed discuss political views, without that being linked to a name that they may have shared innocuous but cumulatively outing information.

Either because they don't want people they know IRL knowing those personal details about them, or because they fear people who take exception to their political views stalking or harassing them or their families IRL.

MN has always understood these RL risks are different for women, and that women shouldn't have to permantly give up a longstanding online identity because need support with a sensitive or embarrassing situation or even just want to discuss a divisive news item or political situation.

For example, I have a close person in my life who has dealt with some major medical issues. This was a long time ago and most people who know them now would not know this, nor does the person want them to. I have a username I use on threads about that topic so I can talk candidly about the experience. I would not be able to do so under my main username as it's too possible someone who knows me would recognise who the person is.

how do we hide whole sections ?

I was brutalised on AIBU a few years ago when I had intended to post
on Chat.
Some posters were spoiling for a fight, some wicked, some unhinged.

then as an antidote, the kindly poster who came in at the end like the
Lilac Fairy,

Go into your account settings, then talk settings, and in there you can manage which topics you see. There's the option to hide different topics.

BIossomtoes · 22/09/2026 10:29

LuckyHazelFox · 22/09/2026 09:28

Yes it is a shame that being able to name change is being abused and used for means other than to seek help and support. It's ruining it for the genuine cases. I don't know how the site gets round that.

Most of Mumsnet is knowledgeable, supportive and interesting. Unfortunately, like everywhere else, there are also those on here who have been brainwashed by culture war issues that have no bearing on their day to day lives. Perhaps easier to hate marginalised groups than actually engage with the complex problems in the world.

Exactly. I can agree with people who want to see more people in work and off benefits. At the same time, I will disagree completely on how that is to be achieved.

CuriousKangeroo · 22/09/2026 10:03

I completely agree, OP. I suspect some of it is bots and infiltration by unethical political parties in order to stir up hatred. I have complained to MN too, and they are utterly useless at addressing it. I think the engagement drives profit and it is clear that is their main aim. Which is sad given a predominantly female social media platform is a rarity and MN was - and could be - so good.

For a while it put me off using MN but now I try to scroll on and not engage. I’m not always successful and then it puts me in a bad mood and feeling a bit hopeless about the state of the world. I should probably leave altogether and likely will at some point. MN is going the way of Twitter.
