Why so much hate on MN?

@MNHQ
Why so much hate on MN?
Posters hiding behind complaints about the government, presenting themselves as reasonable actors, to push hate about asylum seekers, people with disabilities, benefit claimants..Mostly the same names all day everyday.
I am told to report - MN just not interested.
I am told to hide the thread..
Why isn't moderation better?
I know this will always exist and exists on other platforms but MN makes no effort to even try to anything about it.
You can't really sell MN as a caring, supportive site with all this stuff offered on a daily basis in active.

That doesn’t mean it’s not actually hateful

Can you give an example?

🤷‍♀️ well what do you want MN to do? Posting isn’t compulsory.

It does seem like there's some effort going into telling mods how to do their Job. Don't get the answer you don't like, keep pushing and rephrasing until you get your way.

To clarify, what do you mean by "hate"?

I think the trend of the last twenty years or so to dismiss other people's anger as some sort of free-floating hate unconnected to the context in which that person exists is one of the reasons politics has become so fractured and ineffective.

A lot does get lumped under this. Some men target mn on this basis. They’d be happy to drive women off altogether. Thankfully it doesn’t work.

JaneJeffer · 22/09/2026 20:14

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 22/09/2026 20:13

But if you reported it and it remains, MN has deemed it not hateful, no? Along with other reports.

I’ve never seen anything genuinely hateful stand after a report.

How would you know? I don’t announce it when I’ve reported a post.

I was talking about my own reports. They’ve always deleted them.

Nope, disagree with you.

The Labour government are utterly terrible, hence the valid criticism.

No hate.

Personally I'm not defining hate as things I don't personally agree with. I'm referring to genuine hate, because unfortunately some posters do post hate, the genuine sort. Just wanted to emphasise that.

Thanks for raising this, @Oncetwicethreetimesmore

We do understand why some discussions on Talk can feel confronting. Mumsnet is a broad public forum, so there will be strong disagreement on political and social issues and we won’t remove a view simply because other people strongly dislike it.

We do remove posts that are racist, or otherwise hate speech, as well as
personal attacks, deliberately inflammatory behaviour and posts that are simply seriously unpleasant. We know that moderation can sometimes feel inconsistent from the outside, particularly when people have seen only part of the context but please do keep reporting specific posts that you think cross the line as that is much more helpful than reporting a whole thread or a general type of opinion.

Just a reminder to everyone here - please don’t publicly accuse other posters of being trolls, bots or part of a coordinated group. If you have concerns about a user, report to us and leave us to investigate.

This thread is in danger of becoming an example of the problem it is discussing, so please keep the focus on the posts and arguments and not on each other.

@BeckyAMumsnet , you say you remove posts that are racist. I would suggest that you remove some posts which are racist. It is evident that you don't remove all.

Obviously, I don't know if this is because your moderators aren't trained well enough to recognise racism when they see it, because MNHQ believes that people should have the right to express racist views to a certain point or simply because the racist posts generate more discussion and therefore more advertising revenue. But it simply isn't true to suggest that MNHQ deletes all racist posts.

Change all of this from Jewish to Muslim and all hell would break loose. What was that somebody was saying yesterday about calling out racism when they see it. So you are gaslighting Jews trying to tell them who they are and what they should stand for?

BunfightBetty · 22/09/2026 18:39

dreamiesformolly · 22/09/2026 18:35

It isn't always deleted though. And no, I don't just mean stuff I personally dislike.

What, you reported it as hate and they didn’t agree it was hate and left it up?

Can you link to any, so we know what you mean?

I’ve never seen anything genuinely hateful stand after a report. Distasteful or hurtful - yes, there’s a fair amount of that. But hateful - no, love never seen that. I’ve personally reported racist posts and they’ve been deleted.

EasternStandard · 22/09/2026 18:39

dreamiesformolly · 22/09/2026 18:34

Posters will always want them to do more to make the site align with their views If that's your view, presumably you're including yourself in that statement?

No I’m happy with it as is. I want posters to be free to post from all political parties. No bot accusations, community notes, deletions for personal attacks are fine.

I find the bot accusations are more likely against some posters and I’m happy mnhq delete those too.

It’s a site without algorithms and where people don’t always agree, I’m happy with that.

dreamiesformolly · 22/09/2026 18:35

BunfightBetty · 22/09/2026 18:25

I agree there is sometime genuine hate, but as Eastern says, when it’s genuine, it’s deleted if you report it. You do need to report it, though, they won’t automatically notice.

Mnhq deletes stuff. Posters will always want them to do more to make the site align with their views, but it’s fine as is. There’s always X or BlueSky for community notes type stuff mentioned below.

Mn is its own thing tg.

The word 'hate' should be a word used only to denote exactly that, but its usage has been so watered down lately that it's starting to become a bit meaningless. It seems that every second poster has started to throw it around as a term to mean 'an opinion I don't agree with'.

There are some posters who are unpleasant on all sides of every argument on here, but MN have to tread the line between freedom of speech and removing comments that cross a line. Where there is actual racism, ageism, ableism, etc, then of course MN should be removing those comments. Some posters don't seem to understand where that line is or should be drawn, however, and start shouting 'hate' and reporting comments that fall well short of it.

Saying people can't change sex and there are some circumstances where that matters isn't, in itself, hate.

Discussing the impact of immigration on provision of services and allocation of resources isn't, in itself, hate.

These are both factual issues that can be discussed factually. Some of it depends on how views are expressed, of course. But as grown adults, we need to be resilient enough to be able to see a view we don't agree with and be able to tolerate that. If you can't, then best to stay off the internet in general until you've been able to develop the necessary coping skills to hear opinions that differ to yours.

Personally I'm not defining hate as things I don't personally agree with. I'm referring to genuine hate, because unfortunately some posters do post hate, the genuine sort. Just wanted to emphasise that.

I agree about the certain type of person who thinks like that and believes they are unquestioningly correct, but I suspect that these days, there are far more of them on the right than the left.

By the way, it is possible to be left-leaning and not be woke. Still, I'd rather be called left wing and woke than be right wing and racist.😁

@sherbetlemonade , I thought I’d made myself clear. I don’t think everyone on the left of politics is woke, which is a group of people who adhere to a set of beliefs because they are the current group think. I would find it quite difficult to put myself in a solid political box because actually I have some strong beliefs that some people may describe as ‘woke’ for instance I’m a very strong supporter of animal and gay rights, socially I’m very liberal but fiscally I’m strongly Conservative. I read around subjects and make up my own mind, sometimes as a result of additional information I change my stance.
It’s always helpful I think to ask questions rather than make assumptions.
I really hope that you are not suggesting that all those who align with the right of politics are racist? I certainly am not and neither are most Conservatively minded people. I find any suggestion that I may be racist deeply hurtful. I lost my mum ten years ago but she was so proud of my colour blindness as a child and I bought up my boys to judge people for who they are regardless of their colour or religion and I am extremely proud of them for their lack of prejudice.

@AtHomeWithThe the bar would need to be very high to delete posts on the basis of misinformation. On many topics the truth is hotly contested, MN could be entering an absolute minefield if they took it upon themselves to wade in delete untrue posts.

That's a fair point, actually. Perhaps MN should add a community notes type feature?

Absolutely, and people should report anything particularly egregious, IMO.

Yes, but they're only going to be able to jump on the most obvious examples, aren't they? They can't play internet cop for everything.
