Truncated posts with "show more" (NOT quoted sections)

Very much feels like the site if being positioned for rage baity arguments and not for discussion or support.
FWR, relationships, Education, style and beauty there are so many great areas of the site with posters giving helpful longer posts.
MN s a great resource because it has great posters.

Surely MNHQ should just want to facilitate and keep those posters. And not engineer self censoring from the current posters and attracting only new users who might be more suited to posting in150 characters?

You know what. I normally try and stick up for MN when changes are made because everyone will get used to it eventually.

But this is pants. I dont want to click another bloody thing. I just want to read.

Are any of the mnhq team actual bona fida mumsnetters? Becausr if you were I'm saying you wouldn't have done this.

It’s awful! Unasked for and user -unfriendly. It’s really clunky to use and makes the page visually clunky and cluttered. Please turn it off.

If you want to make changes to the site maybe the actual users could suggest some.

Please get rid of it! All the extra clicks are so annoying! I hate it.

I have no problem reading long threads. I can scan if I don't want to read the whole thing rather than entirely ignoring half of it or having to click on the read more.

Does clicking the see more button count for your click stats for showing advertisers your numbers?

Joining in to say I hate it too. Slightly arthritic fingers means the constant "click here" causes me pain.

It's rubbish. Make it stop. If someone has taken the trouble to write a post I want to have the option to read it without any clicky clicky games.

It is disrespectful to posters.

So it's back. It's dreadful. Especially on FWR, we have very long posts, and I would hazard a guess that most of us read ALL of it. This is important information for women to be aware of their rights, and the news about efforts to curtail those rights. It now means that posters need to make their entire argument in the first two paragraphs or so. Otherwise, I fear we will miss a lot of information, and posters will miss out a lot of readers. If I were a conspiracist, I might think this was deliberately censoring women's words.
But, I'm not. I understand it's a feature, but, as someone rightly said previously, we aren't scrolling aimlessly because we are bored. We are reading. Please give us the option to disable this feature.

Do you think your post is 'particularly long'? Longer than it needed to be? Full of irrelevant information everyone can just skim past?

Personally, I wanted to read it all and thought it was nicely written without waffle. But it's been hit by the new cut off so clearly it's 'too long' for MN.

How do I find the feature? Intrusive and annoying. And it's making my thumb joint hurt.

What is it meant to improve for the user? Fine for quote posts but I realise I've just skipped past posts elsewhere with it. So people should post shorter, less thoughtful posts? Is that what is behind it?

Please turn it off. It negatively impacts on reading posts. Three paragraphs shouldn't need truncating! I didn't miss it once when it was gone. I have immediately noticed and been irritated by having to "show more" following it's return.

For embedded quotes it is useful and I actually appreciate it. For original posts I cannot see that it has any place. And as others have pointed out it is actively unhelpful for accessibility.

Its also not working properly either. Still seeing it every so often on posts that are one or two lines long.

It’s good when used on quotes but irritating and unnecessary on normal posts. Please at least give us the option to turn it off.

Ack. I've just noticed this. It's horrible. I posted a reply and thought I bet people won't read all of my scintillatingly wise words now.

It is going to worsen the problem of people posting without properly reading threads/posts.

Surely a few extra paras don't slow down page loading much - certainly not by comparison with pointless GIFs etc.

I agree. Not as bad as it was, but still an unnecessary change, which I doubt anyone asked for or wants.

No, it’s honestly awful. First time I’ve seen it today and it’s not adding anything to the experience!

It’s still terrible. Just truncate quotes posts and leave actual posts well alone. I want to read actual posts as one thing not click. I want to scroll one handed. It’s actively making the experience of your site worse. Once again, at least make it optional so those of us who cannot stand it can turn it off. Please.

I've just had to click Show More on this thread. It's AWFUL. Please let us turn it off. It's the opposite of reading and engagement.

As I pointed out above, twice, this change decreases the accessibility of this site - more clicks to access information is not remotely helpful for those with mobility issues.

@AmeliaPMumsnet if you insist on installing this - it seems unwanted to most - update, then please make it optional.

Not for actual posts. I don't understand the complaint that scrolling "disrupts the flow" of a thread - what? Do people not understand how a forum works? IMO the point of a forum like MN is to have a conversation, which means reading the posts which have already been made. What I don't like is threads filled with dozens of disconnected responses directly to the OP. I like back and forth. If a thread is too long by the time you get to it to read it all, then just move on to a different one or at least read the last page.

Caveat - Am guilty of making wall-of-text replies which I appreciate people might not want to read all of. Though I mainly feel guilty when someone quotes my entire post in order to say "Thanks this helped me" 😬hence thinking it would be helpful to have a truncated version shown of quoted bits only (or letting people quote just a short portion of a post).

I have no objection to truncating the quoted post. That is fine. I'll have already read it.

I hate the truncation of an actual post. I read the thread, not skip through it. So I will always have to expand it. Please make it possible to disable it.
