Political threads, bullying and echo chambers

That YouTube has nothing particularly insightful to say and just some random dude amusing himself whilst driving so why worry about it?

I do, however, agree that the left is most definitely demonstrating an unfortunate lack of critical thinking these days. Too much group think / wrapping up all ‘left’ causes into one left perspective and not enough informed understanding and unpacking of individual issues.

This is extremely worrying as we desperately need effective leadership from both right and left.

Both need each other for checks and balances, but Brexit threw the political landscape into chaos and it’s never recovered with Johnson kicking out the intelligent Tory MPs, businesses struggling to do business with our biggest trad partner and Starmer making v bad choices for his cabinet. Reeves being the worst choice.

Or, you know, you could be the one in the wrong? Maybe take some time for personal reflection?

I don’t think that is what that poster is saying, they are saying that on each thread the OP name changes and then claims to be a new poster when they are anything but.

@TenLittleSweetWrappers Mnet is full of robust debate threads. Thankfully it also makes room for more chilled threads where posters hang out with like minded people.

It's a breach of Mnet etiquette to crash such a thread.

I've seen exactly that in the television section. It's awful when a discussion descends into chatter, as it usually does, and becomes personal derailing and off topic trivia. One self appointed boss controls the thread, on occasion even stating that only certain sorts of comments are welcome; anyone new (not part of the usual crowd) who enters the thread and doesn't toe the approved line is rounded on and hounded out.

You cannot name change on a thread you've already engaged in.

I wouldn't have any common ground with people on the threads in question, so I stay off them. It's just the polite thing to do. It's rude to insert yourself into a group of like minded people and start challenging them. There are plenty of generic threads with wide ranging viewpoints where you can do that.

You’re either misrepresenting your intentions in posting there, or this happened under a previous username (if you’ve name changed, how long have you been following and posting on these threads that you just happened across?)

A political thread came up in my feed so sort of ‘advertised’ to me by Mumsnet. So I had a look.

They were referring to your behaviour as “it”. As in “it’s annoying when somebody keeps inserting themselves into a long-running thread to argue with posters who know each other”.

Mumsnet told me to stay off the thread and to discuss my political thoughts elsewhere.
This is exactly what you should do. I’m decidedly left-leaning, and all a quick look at those threads revealed was people across a political spectrum who are annoyed with this Labour government.

You’re engaging in the behaviour you’re complaining about: trying to get people on side to mock those who you feel are “bullying” you. Just stay off their threads and leave them alone.

I've seen you on that thread and you are clearly not posting in good faith either there or here. Constant attempts at derailment and claiming you're oh so worried about Reform when that is not the focus of the thread and it is not populated by Reform supporters. Name changing and claiming to be a new poster, making post after post that simply do not address anything being discussed. Did nobody ever teach you any manners?

Have you never seen a thread where OP is trying to chose an expensive handbag, posters try to help and then a few sods join in to say they'd never spend more than 50p on a bag and OP should give it to charity?

Have you never seen a Christmas thread, on a Christmas topic, where posters enjoy themselves discussing gifts, food, whatever, even in March, and some strugglers join it to say it's too early, not appropriate, whatever?

If you haven't seen it you can't be a long term poster.

There is a great freedom of speech here, so if you don't enjoy a thread, especially long running one with an established community, you aren't sentenced to spend your time there.

This. It’s really rude to barge in to a thread with an established community of posters who clearly have a commonality of views and start arguing with them. The pub table analogy is very apt. There are plenty of political threads if that’s what you want to discuss.

So if I see a thread about the Green party, full of Green party supporters chatting to each other, but I don't agree with the Green party, I should complain when they are not 10000% welcoming to me and my tedious carefully thought out arguments against them when I try to take over their thread?

Of course there are some "echo chambers" on here, OP. It's the way a forum site evolves.

Do you think you have the right to tell everyone how to think? That's incredibly arrogant and intolerant. What difference do you think you make? And I don't believe that in the real world you go elbowing your way into strangers conversations to tell them their views are wrong, because they're not the same as your views.

The post clearly says they agree with the title of the YouTube video, not the full content of it.

Bleh, you made me read thread 20. They all seemed very civil and talking about UK Labour and their policies until YOU tried to shoehorn Trump and yesterday's news about him into the conversation. No wonder they got pissed off (although I've not seen that from them either).

I think at best you are taking things out of context innocently.

I lurk on the thread you have mentioned and they most certainly do not support flags on roundabouts.
