To think mumsnet should explain why Gaza threads keep getting deleted?

No explanation and nothings been said that was antisemetic or broke guidelines. I’d really like to know why whole discussions are being deleted on a globally important topic instead of individual posts being deleted. Some of us care deeply about this topic and would like to see it being discussed.

OP posts:

But do you deny that discussion of this issue is censored? I posted a fundraiser for MSF in Palestine in a local mums WhatsApp group and it was deleted

😂

To be clear it’s never occurred to me to think for one moment that “Jews control the media”.

But do you deny that discussion of this issue is censored? I posted a fundraiser for MSF in Palestine in a local mums WhatsApp group and it was deleted.

That's hardly censorship. Whoever happens to run that particular what's app group can delete whatever posts they want. I'm sure there are plenty of other places you can promote one of the biggest charities in the world, it's not some conspiracy.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2025 21:44

Deletion of offensive batshittery = censored Hmm

Also

"The fact that hardly any news items about the Israeli government's actions in Gaza and in the West Bank are open for comments, even the Guardian of all places, says something."

What does it say, do you think? Maybe you want to consider why you're - possibly subconsciously - repeating the trope that Jews control the media. That might explain why some people feel, despite the evidence, that their views on the conflict are being censored or suppressed. Because on some level they believe that Jews really are shadowy figures in high places exerting undue evidence.

Like me, the OP is probably horrified regarding this particular conflict because:

  1. The citizens of Gaza can't flee from the conflict like other war zones because the Israeli government controls all exit points (just as it did before the war) and has beseiged the area since.
  2. No journalists are allowed in to verify both sides' actions.
  3. The Israeli government government has killed approaching 60,000 people, therefore inflicting a disproportionate level of violence on innocent civilians.
  4. It has actively targeted hospitals and areas where the population fled to 'safety'. Therefore terrorising the whole population as nowhere is now safe.
  5. The Israeli government's ultra right wing government members openly stated their aim to starve the Gazan population and then carried it out.
  6. They have limited aid into Gaza and made the collection of the aid by starving people into a shooting and shelling gallery. What a choice starve or risk being killed when going to collect food!
  7. All this while western governments, including the UK, do nothing tangible to stop the relentless slaughter, often of whole families, whilst stating "we support the right of Israel to defend itself" and we are "staunch allies of Israel. Israel is no longer defending itself, but seeking the decimation of the Palestinian society in Gaza.
  8. When the Gazan people can cannot defend themselves from the massive repercussions of what a faction did on 7th October to Israel, it is looking every day like shooting fish in a fish bowl.

This is why the Gazan's plight affects us so much. The sheer, wanton, destruction of a people and their land, all while the world watches on in horror at the actions of the Israeli government, who shout "you are being anti-semitic" when told they are committing war crimes.

The fact that hardly any news items about the Israeli government's actions in Gaza and in the West Bank are open for comments, even the Guardian of all places, says something. So Mumsnet is one of the few places where we can work through with others our horror about the appalling situation, on a popular part of Mumsnet and not be hidden in the background.

But your statements are incorrect.

  1. Gaza has a border with Egypt. Why don't you ask the Egyptians to give them safe passage?
  2. You think Hamas would let journos they perceive to be unsympathetic to report freely? They kill their own people without thought, you can bet foreign journos wouldn't last long. Sometimes I wish Israel would let them in to the strip to prove the point, but that's not very humane.
  3. All death is terrible but a massive proportion (estimated at 50%) comprises Hamas fighters. No matter what you think, Israel just wants to live, exist and thrive without having bombs constantly dropped on it, suicide attacks and massacres such as 7 Oct. It really doesn't want to send in its youth to destroy Hamas infrastructure so the armed force on its border constantly trying to destroy them is neutered (Hamas' stated aim, remember).
  4. It's been proven that Hamas' infrastructure is in/under/around hospitals. It actively operates out of these, schools and mosques because it a) hopes this might protect its fighters and b) it makes great footage that naive people in the West believes portray Israel in a bad light. In war mistakes do happen but not to the extent that some think.
  5. I don't like this either. The only justification I can think of is that this was a tactic to make the enemy believe its intent. I hope that to be the case.
  6. So much aid has gone into Gaza that people there are in theory receiving 40% more than the recommended daily allowance for adults. New study finds food supply to Gaza more than sufficient for population’s needs | The Times of Israel. Hamas has been stealing the food, holding it in warehouses and selling it on the black market at hugely inflated prices. They have even been shooting Gazans who are trying to avail themselves of aid, because it suits them to scare off the hungry.
  7. Israel is destroying the infrastructure that Hamas has built (at our expense - all that aid money) to destroy Israel.
  8. Some can't defend themselves, many are complicit. Have you seen the coverage of 7 Oct? Many were happy and gleeful, celebrating in the streets. Many, I wager, have no choice to 'celebrate' because of the fear and power and control Hamas has in the strip and I accept that many innocents are dying too. The pressure should be on Hamas to cede power and release the hostages. They have the power to make it all stop, but they won't.

I will happily do so as it’s futile, as expected.
I hope for peace for all involved.

Why? It's racist.

Flippityflopflip · 08/07/2025 17:39

You are referring to something I haven't commented on.

I am talking about the right to discuss a particular war/news event and the reasons why.

But you are perfectly allowed to discuss views on Gaza and there's a whole section dedicated to threads about the conflict.

What the OP did was start an offensive thread where they wanted to post abhorrent views like Hamas didn't rape anyone on October 7th.

Do you think threads like that should be allowed? You seemed to rush to defend the OP so I assume you know what she was posting.

I also suspect you know why the threads are being deleted too…

I don’t. Why are they being deleted?

Because you cannot answer it when it’s turned round. Which says a lot. It was a simple question.

Honestly extremist views like yours increase division. That’s why I don’t post much on here. These kinds of comments make me grateful for the friends I have irl of every religion with whom I can have balanced discussions. And where everyone has compassion for the death, injury and rape of innocents on every side.

Meanwhile, Ukraine is on its 27th thread. Why can’t we discuss this topic when everyone is being civil and exchanging views.

Looking at the CITME board, 19 and a bit pages so a minimum of 900 (undeleted) threads broadly about Gaza and Israel.

I don't know which were deleted but it will be because there were a lot of posts breaking talk guidelines.

That doesn't answer my question though, since I've never said the conflict isn't horrific.

Gang rape of women until they're unconscious, followed by the insertion of handwritten, plastic wrapped notes into their wombs, notes which read "this is to ensure no babies of your ethnicity are ever born again" is also horrific. Where are the weekly protests? The thousands of threads? The accusations that you can't say anything without being accused of racism?

This is the problem. It’s so damn frustrating.

If someone criticised Hamas’ actions on Oct 7th and then a Muslim person called them Islamophobic just based on that, I would think that was ridiculous. I wouldn’t say that they were correct in that accusation. Would you automatically say they were right to say that as they are Muslim??

I'm not getting into that discussion.

SillyDisappointment · 08/07/2025 17:51

Dangermoo · 08/07/2025 17:45

I don't believe anybody has the right to evaluate whether antisemitism is taking place - except Jewish people and Mumsnet.

These threads always go the same way: OP opens the discussion with faux naivety. Then the pile òn begins, the Jewish community is made to feel like shit and out come the usual platitudes, which always target Israel's right to existence. No, don't anyone come at me with what's been said repeatedly because I'm only interested in supporting a group of people, who have it from all directions. The CITME board exists for anything else related to Gaza.

But most people are not as black-and-white. For example I think the Israeli government and IDF have gone too far with the massacre of Palestinians. However, I completely support Israel‘s right to exist. I live in the most Jewish borough of London, so we and the kids have plenty of Jewish friends, I have a good friend who has done Aliyah who recently sent me photos of his bomb shelter (there was no toilet, that surprised me..). I am not antisemitic even though I hate what Israel is now doing.

There are many people like me who feel sick at what Hamas did on October 7 and feel devastated for all those young people and their families and the hostages. We also are brokenhearted by the images of what is happening to the kids in Gaza. And we also think Israel should exist. I feel like the moderate voices just get lost and people focus on the extreme ends. It’s frustrating.
