Is MN an anonymous site

100thtime · 06/07/2025 19:11

I joined MN thinking it was an anonymous site for exchanging opinions and asking for help for problems etc.

I thought we were all supposed to be equal on this site, although in the past have been upset by other posters " ganging up" and joining together to bully other posters , including myself on occasion.

It was a revelation to me today to find out from another thread today that actually other MNers are friends with each other in real life, that they know each other's real identity, that they socialise with each other in real life, attend Christmas parties together.

I would never have set up an MN account if I'd known i was intruding on a friendship group.I think l think MN should be transparent as to that iswhat it is: a friendship group and is not actually a site for people to interact with each other equally on an anonymous basis.

I’ve been on here over 20 years. I know people because in the early days it was smaller and we recognised user names and made friends. Yes I’ve meet people in rl but equally I have spoken to and engaged with many many thousands more as total strangers.

100thtime · 06/07/2025 19:25

I didn't know this and if I had known i would never ever have joined MN and I would never have posted anything.

I feel feel absolutely dreadful now.
I had no idea that posters on here knew each other's identity .

I thought it was the one place I was equal with other people but I'm not.

Edited

There are posters here from every corner of the globe.

Even the UK ones are from all over.

Occasionally there may be a meet up of a few people, even if there were 30 people it's still probably. 0.001% of the users.

Did you really think on a site this big absolutely noone would know anyone else?

You're being very odd about this, and your reaction isn't healthy at all. You said sone concerning things on the last thread, and this is equally concerning.

Do you have any rl help?

RockyRogue1001 · 06/07/2025 19:44

Get round here @ExitPursuedByABare
It's a blast this evening.

The Australians are all asleep again, tho

MissAmbrosia · 06/07/2025 19:43

@100thtime you are being totally silly. Back in the day when the site was much smaller - there were indeed many meetups and FB groups. I don't think that's happened for best part of 10 years though - but I think there are still local groups and maybe women with similar due dates getting in touch. Just name change and stop fretting. I have met LOADS of MNetters in real life, am in regular contact with many of them - though i might not know who they are on here any more.

ExitPursuedByABare · 06/07/2025 19:42

Damn. I’m in the Dog and Dick. Wondered where you all were.

RockyRogue1001 · 06/07/2025 19:41

They're all lying to you, @100thtime

We're all in the Dog and Duck right now mning together. All of mn except you.

That's how mn works

ColdHenrietta · 06/07/2025 19:39

🤔🤔🤔

@100thtime you would be wise to say, in your next post, something acknowledging the vast majority of responses you have ignored - all saying this is overwhelmingly an anonymous site. If you simply repeat exactly what you’ve said above, several times, people will be entitled to believe you are taking the piss.

HTH.

BlueFairyBugsBooks · 06/07/2025 19:38

This site is as anonymous as you want it to be. I use different names for different reasons. Some are more anonymous than others.

I've never met other MNetters IRL. Not knowingly anyway.

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 06/07/2025 19:38

Shock horror @100thtime there's men on here too!

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 06/07/2025 19:37

100thtime · 06/07/2025 19:30

I feel absolutely awful.

I shall delete my account now.

I never intended on intruding on other people.

I can't figure out how you came to this conclusion! Mumsnet has thousands and thousands of members, do you really think everyone else knows each other and it's only you that doesn't?

DancingNotDrowning · 06/07/2025 19:36

This site is as anonymous or identifiable as you choose it to be.

over the years I’ve met a number of posters from MN. Some I’m still friends with, some just loosely connected on SM. None of that impacts you.

Your deeply paranoid posting is concerning.

Gazelda · 06/07/2025 19:35

OP, if it’s any consolation, I don’t know anyone either. I’ve been around for approx 17 years, but no one notices me. I get involved I. Threads from time to time. I occasionally start a thread. I’ve found MN amazingly informative, interesting, helpful, funny, frustrating and kind.

You are misunderstanding the site. A few people know each other. Millions do not. You’re not intruding on friendships, cliques or gangs. You’re welcome to post, encouraged to interact. Hopefully you’ll get some positive experiences and learn how to ‘read the room’ on some of the more sensitive threads.

Who admits to using MNs in the real
world?! 😆

I do I'm forever telling dw about thread's.

DicentraAlba · 06/07/2025 19:35

OP have you bothered to read the many responses you have had? Every single post on this thread emphasises that MN is NOT a friendship group. Why are you ignoring that fact?

Hope so if they're had a go at someone who's grieving.

Minishreddar · 06/07/2025 19:34

How bizzare. I literally know no one. But I expect others who have been here since day 1 do. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I fear this is not the forum for you at this point. Maybe a Facebook group for one?

PolyVagalNerve · 06/07/2025 19:34

upandleftthenright · 06/07/2025 19:25

@PolyVagalNerve It was on site stuff earlier. A woman asking about the MN account of her bereaved friend who she’d met through a MN interest and this one hijacked the thread going on about how dare they have a friendship outside of MN and how hurt she was. To someone deep in bereavement.

Oh my goodness, how sad - thanks for explanation -

OP, sorry you are feeling threatened by posters who have contact -

it has no bearing on you / me / anyone of us -

JudgeBread · 06/07/2025 19:33

Just because a few people know eachother doesn't mean it's not widely anonymous. I don't know anyone on here in real life, doesn't mean I'm any less than the people who do.

You do realise you can't go anywhere on the internet if users knowing eachother in real life is a problem for you? Because that's true on literally any forum anywhere.

You've nothing to worry about, as long as you don't freely give away personally identifying info, of course.

I'm guessing that the vast majority of MNers are not known to others except by their MN username and any info that they've given in their posts.

Even then, people frequently change unimportant (to the thread) details to maintain their anonymity. A 12yo DD may become a 13YO DS. A 42yo who's been married for 16 years and lives in Portsmouth may become a 44yo who's been married for 14 years and lives in Plymouth. A teacher may become an accountant.

Plus you can change your username as often as you like.

Hasn't EXACTLY THIS happened year or two ago. Exactly that

Are you quite well? Hmm

There's thousands of users, they don't all meet up weekly for a cuppa.

Kimwestonhelpless · 06/07/2025 19:31

Op I've been on here about five years I sometimes de register and sign back on if I've over shared about personal issues and Nc often depending on my favourite record at the time and not for nefarious reasons.
I don't know anyone on here I don't think.
Like anything online be careful not to post real identifying details.
Post away and enjoy.
