Probably been said before, but an area just for Trans issues?

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 26/04/2025 00:05

Could there be an area just for trans issues please?

Whatever one thinks of it, there are so so many threads on it and with the recent court ruling, at least some of this issue is now going to be decided.

This issue is unfortunately a major societal one now, but the Supreme Court ruling has been made, and the immediate reactions have taken place.

There are so many threads on it. It's taking over and it's hard to escape the conclusion that some of the threads are started, or kept high up on the front pages of various sections, by trans rights activists who are not taking the Supreme Court ruling with grace. It's playing into the hands of people who frankly seem to be posting with their own agenda and it's not always one of goodwill or genuine discourse.

Please could we at least have a section where the multiple, often repeated, threads this issue can go? It's time for that now.

That’s not what an echo chamber is, though. This is a definition from Oxford Languages: ‘an environment in which a person encounters only beliefs or opinions that coincide with their own, so that their existing views are reinforced and alternative ideas are not considered’.

This describes FWR well, IME.

Not at all because trans activists are in FWR.

An 'echo chamber' which the overwhelming majority of the public agree with. Hence, not very much an echo chamber, just reality. It's like you claiming a belief that the world is round and not flat is an 'echo chamber'.

It's really not.

Mocking trans activists for wanting an echo chamber is supremely ironic, given that the sex and gender branch is the perfect example of an echo chamber.

This, the constant. 'Oh just need a safe space without all the nasty feminists not agreeing that twaw or having opinions....'
Agree, they just want an echo chamber, which they'll get on reddit.
@pikkumyy77 if your daughters aren't on reddit they'll love it, absolutely an anti-mn, jkr hating, echo chamber of how everything is 'wimmin fault, and how the trans wimmin better anyway'....

I've asked mumsnet repeatedly to move threads over to sex and gender, I get wishy washy replies about it.

It would be great if everyone posted appropriately but the trans exclusionaries are fond of saying they want people to see their threads because too many folks hide the feminism board (for obvious reasons)

We are MALE exclusionary. Not 'trans' exclusionary (we're fine with trans men, so are we only 50% 'trans exclusionary'???).

It's like you really, REALLY don't get that this issue is about the battle of the sexes, it's about MALE vs FEMALE. That someone is trans is neither here nor there. The only reason trans is even relevant to the discussion is because males found a loophole to violate womens boundaries and spaces.

I am pro women’s rights—this is what I am complaining about! The extremely narrow definition of human, women, gay here at mumsnet. Human rights and women’s rights are not a zero sum game!

my daughters are both gay and extremely pro trans rights. They have friends of all kinds and do not feel their rights are diminished by welcoming allies of any sort or history.

The rabid anti trans stance advocated here has led directly to the diminution of female rights and gay rights in the US. We are losing bodily autonomy (abortion)and may lose gay marriage and the right of gay parents to raise their own children. All because a ginned up frenzy against trans people made enough voters choose Trump. Funny! All those wailing over trans people in women’s sports? In the US Trump’s administration will end funding for women’s sports at the collegiate level. Women, non whites, and non Christians are all being swept out of classrooms and history books.

The enemy if your enemy is not your friend. He’s still your enemy.

Yet AGAIN, being pro womens rights to retain our safe female only single sex spaces and sports isn't 'anti-trans', let alone 'rabidly. Unless of course, you are ADMITTING that to be pro-trans = anti-women. Which it is.

Trans overreach has caused hate against gay people. This, is all entirely the fault of the overreach of the trans lobby who are violent at marches and who seek to deny same sex attraction, and who hate women. Trans lobby are destroying LGB rights and womens rights. They are like termites eating away at LGB from the inside.

Hi @DucklingSwimmingInstructress. Thanks for your suggestion.
We usually create new boards in response to clear user demand. As others have mentioned, there is already an LGBT Parents board, an LGBT Children board, and a board for sex and gender discussions within the Feminism section.
Just a reminder that you can hide individual threads - or entire topics - if there are conversations you’d prefer not to see.

We’re unlikely to move threads that are responding to major current news stories, as they’re often relevant to broader site-wide discussions.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Wow. So much numberwang there (a UK tv reference that you wouldn’t get…) but who knew that all the US Trump voters were ‘directly’ influenced by the feminist boards of the UK’s Mumsnet? 😂

Yep. Those rednecks love a bit of AIBU 🤣🤣🤣

A dedicated area would be great, then the rest of us who have other things to worry about could avoid the topic.

Goodness me, what a wide and often weird set of answers here.

Anyone with any sense at all knew what I meant by the original post. According to some posters I seem to be pro-trans, according to others, anti-trans. If you ever needed a thread to indicate how often people assume things about others and they're wrong, this is it. And how difficult it is for people to actually read the original post.

I think it says something about the nature of the trans movement that this has happened!

At least @Cynicalaboutall actually understood what I was suggesting.

"It will die down" and "Mumsnet would probably not move everything over anyway" seem about the most sensible answers otherwise!

Just don't click on it. As I don't click on about 95% of the threads that appear on AIBU or any of the other forums.

It will all die down. Brexit was the same for a while. Covid threads were combative and tedious. One particularly contentious GE produced a month of open warfare on the boards. OFC a legal ruling for women’s rights will prompt discussion on a largely female forum, but the volume will settle in a week or two.

Agree. The 14 year olds are also rolling their eyes at the self absorbed non-binary 19 year olds. And the 19 year olds are realising it's not so rebellious when 50 year olds are transitioning and coming along to events wanting to be their buddy. Doesn't make it very cool.

Cursory · 26/04/2025 07:17

Even if there was a specific area, MNHQ won’t move the threads. I reported a load in AIBU the other day and was told that they were leaving them there.

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 26/04/2025 07:12

I suspect if there was a Trans Issues board the people would unhelpfully comment on it like on the Christian Mumsnetters board. I say that as an atheist who watches what goes on there (always a good way to stay informed). I get very bored with other irreligious folk replying in the vein of "Oh well God doesn't exist so it doesn't matter anyway". The same will happen to people exploring trans issues. I support anyone to live how they wish as long they know their sex can't be changed. But we need spaces on here where we can discuss other things around the subject rather than making obvious statements. Then we have the trolls to deal with...

pikkumyy77 · 26/04/2025 00:25

I wish there were! I am able to block most of the most hostile posts as long as they are under the various “feminist” boards. I do miss reading posts on feminist topics if importance to me as a politically active woman with two gay daughters but the vast majority of those threads are toxically anti trans so I gave up even looking for congenial content.

Since the recent “victory” the anti trans scorekeeping and monomania has spilled over into chat and AIBU.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find any normal, non transphobic, content on the active feed as these celebratory/hostile posts ping to the top of the feed.

A dedicated anti trans thread location would enable like minded mumsnetters to find the content they like while leaving the rest of us free to enjoy the site without having to read through these triumphalist/gloating/hostile Fox news and right wing slander fests.

You realise that at the forefront of this has been numerous pissed off gay women who prior to the ruling had all but lost their right to define themselves as being lesbians with other lesbians , gather as lesbians or insist that their dating spaces were lesbian only.

Or are your gay daughters the new fancy types of lesbians that are also willing to have sex with men as long as they self identify as a woman/lesbian?

Igneococcus · 26/04/2025 06:42

Human rights and women’s rights are not a zero sum game!
It seems that's exactly what the currently tantrumming TRAs think human rights are though, or clarifying women's rights wouldn't have them in a huff and claiming they have lost their rights.

notsureyetcertain · 26/04/2025 06:30

There’s two lgbtq boards to support one for adults one for children. If they are overwhelmed then there may be a need for a sub category. Then there’s the seperate feminist chat for women who want to complain about trans women because the main feminist chat didn’t want to be overloaded with one subject.

people need to use the right boards instead of just using AIBU and chat.

daisychain01 · 26/04/2025 06:24

Why are people so incapable of clicking off a thread they don't like. That's why MNHQ have to have a cull of all the disparate boards that people ask for, because people seem unable to have agency and say to themselves "this thread isn't for me" and leave it. It really isn't complicated!

as for the unicorn "safe space", it's called get off your phone / tablet and stop getting sucked into online drivel!

No. Women standing up for their rights isn't anti trans or transphobic. It's shocking how many people don't understand this.

Considering the vitriolic onslaught from violent men that some women have faced in recent years, and the appalling, misogynistic reaction a lot of them are now having to the SC ruling, this is an issue that needs to be front and centre, not hidden away.

If you don't want to read it or prefer to live in a fantasy world where biological women aren't second class citizens, scroll on by.

OP sounds like you'd be more at home on reddit. I don't think you can ask Mumsnet to provide a trans echo.chamber for you, it's just not in keeping with the nature of the website and feminists will still find you there but there are loads on reddit and other places.

Sounds like if you can't bear to see any threads you disagree with, this isn't the best place for you.
