Did something actually happen on Sunday night?

woodenbatandball · 04/02/2025 06:42

I was reading a post that said the site was infiltrated with child abuse images on Sunday under some kind of attack.
Lots of people hadn't been online to see this but some said they did. The thread was then deleted and there has been no explanation. And the media is silent about it. Can anyone confirm if this actually happened and if it did, why aren't Mumsnet commenting? All seems badly handled for Mumsnet not to comment either way.

Afternoon, everyone.
Understandably we have a lot of threads in Site Stuff about what happened in the early hours of yesterday morning. In order to update you all about next steps as quickly as possible, we're going to close this thread and others to new posts for now and will post any updates on this thread so we can keep all the answers to questions and info on what's happening together.
We'll be back with any updates as soon as we can.

Playing Devil's Advocate here but does those who don't know need to know?

Some MNetters may have trauma in their past which could be triggered by these posts.

Is it really fair to have the entire site filled with discussions on CSA? The only people who are "owed" anything are those who were directly affected, and we have no idea what support MN/the police have offered behind the scenes.

One thread is enough.

Well yes they do, because without full information how can they make an informed decision about whether to risk staying on MN?

Knowing what happened, and how it is being addressed allows us to decide, for example, not to use the site at times when there is no active moderation.

It allows us to decide whether MNHQ have taken steps sufficient to reassure us and continue to make them money by providing content and/or browsing the site.

Jellycats4life · 04/02/2025 11:51

Let’s not forget that MN has been the target of attacks from MRAs and TRAs for years and years, motivated by an hatred of women and women talking to each other, and nothing much is ever done. I am sure the person or people posting CSAM had a similar axe to grind.

Not to mention the threads started by disgusting fetishists, looking to reel in mothers to give them wank material advice in good faith. But all traffic is good traffic, eh?

It’s all well and good saying it’s been dealt with and time to move on, because there will be a next time.

Frequency · 04/02/2025 11:50

It's not news, though.

I agree it was horrific and I feel for those who inadvertently saw the images but it is a known risk to the internet and sites that allow content to be uploaded.

It doesn't happen much on smaller forums like MN but Facebook, Reddit, Insta, TicTok, etc have all had this happen multiple times.

I agree there should have been things in place to minimize the risk of this happening, but it will always be a risk.

@FictionalCharacter thanks for your measured reply. It's insanity.
I've worked in content before and their handling of it is appalling.
I read one perfectly reasonable thread about the topic last night and they deleted it without any explanation. It made me confused to think if anything had actually happened and I'm genuinely none the wiser. Mumsnet please treat your members with a bit more respect and respond officially in a visible place.

If you've worked in content before I'm surprised you don't know the difference between a security breach and a spambot attack.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/02/2025 11:45

@PiggyPigalle - actually you've raised a really interesting point. You can stick a photo on a photo hosting site and link to it here, which is I suspect the picture you have seen.

@JustineMumsnet has MNHQ considered this additional risk?

Velmy · 04/02/2025 11:38

PiggyPigalle · 04/02/2025 11:21

You think it a good idea for the MSM to publish it, so all the loons out there copy it?

I think it's a good idea for the MSM to do their job, which is to report on public interest stories. I'd say CSAM appearing on the UK's (world's?) largest parenting forum while the website was left unstaffed overnight is a massive story.

If this had happened on a video game's website, or a football team's website, they'd quite rightly be all over the news for it.

It's not the MSM's responsibility to stop people copying it, it's MumsNet's.

Lots of issues only get resolved once the media has publicised them. As someone who has worked as both a journo and in community management/safety, I find it very odd that this hasn't been reported on, seemingly anywhere!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/02/2025 11:36

No - photos are still blocked.
Links and GIFs are postable though

CustardySergeant · 04/02/2025 11:35

PiggyPigalle · 04/02/2025 11:30

I take it photos are allowed again? Hoped it had stopped until new steps taken.
I see there's one on "The Litter Tray" posted this morning.

I won't be doing my usual sitting in bed last thing, reading posts in that case. I was doing just that until 12.30 am on Sunday, luckily saw nothing and neither do I ever want to,

That is a GIF, not a photo, which are still not allowed.

BIWI · 04/02/2025 11:33

No - you still can't post photos. What you saw was probably a link to a site, with their photo illustrating the story.

Hey @Velmy I come from a similar background. I think that's why I'm questioning their response xxxx

I'm also shocked that not a single major media outlet has a story up about this yet, from what I've seen. Bizarre.

Anyway, hopefully the volunteers that had to deal with this have been offered access to counseling services.

woodenbatandball · 04/02/2025 09:05

@sparrowflewdown appreciate the measured response. Thank you. Maybe I'm making it out to be bigger than it is. Just seems a horrific thing to have happened for such minor chit chat about it. As I said I was following it on another thread and was surprised they deleted it (as it was just talking about the situation and people not paid enough or anything to monitor the site) so got suspicious if it had even happened when it was deleted.

You are really not making it out to be bigger than it is. It is absolutely awful. Really seriously awful. Think you need to try and trust MN that they are dealing with it in an appropriate way and them posting lots of updates about it probably would not be appropriate. I would have thought it will be a criminal investigation.

One thread is enough.

I think all users of MN need to know that the site will be made watertight. ESPECIALLY those who would be extra triggered by such images ( given that few people could see them without being distressed / disturbed, whatever their experience)

It is very surprising to many that the MN photo filters (if they exist) did not prevent their appearance. People using the site need a clear commitment to sorting this.

MNHQ didn’t even take the most obvious action , suspending photo sharing, until over 12 hours after it started!

Asking for an official pinned communication with the users who donate their content is hardly an unreasonable request

People don’t need to keep bringing it up all the time. It wasn’t a spam bot it was a disgusting individual who decided to post pictures. It’s been dealt with and that’s the end. Frankly if you don’t like the way it’s been handled then leave . You’re acting as it’s the end of the world , it’s not and it was easily remedied.

People keep bringing it up because two days later there still isn't an easily accessible statement on the subject from MN. People keep pointing to some comments buried in another thread with a completely unrelated title - which is absolutely useless to anyone who hasn't clicked on it or been pointed to it.

I'm a former community manager for a very large media firm - there's no detailed statement because MN are almost certainly in crisis management mode over this, as it's the kind of thing that will send advertisers running for the hills.

Still, a pinned, locked thread with a statement along the lines of...

"MumsNet is aware of an incident regarding illegal images being posted that occured on Sunday and are currently investigating the matter. In the meantime, images have been disabled and we will be removing all other threads on the topic to avoid speculation"

...should be the bare minimum almost two days on.

It's been dealt with and that's the end

No, it hasn't and no, it isn't.

This website exists based on the ad revenue generated by its users. There's no such thing as being 100% safe online, but users should have a reasonable expectation that there are adequate systems and protocols in place to mitigate.

I was stunned to find out that MN apparently doesn't employ 24 hours moderation coverage. It's inexcusable. User/volunteer moderators are extremely common, but there must be a specially trained resource available around the clock to deal with things like this.

Disabling images is fine, if that's going to be permanent. But that doesn't stop links being posted.

This issue won't be dealt with until MN puts things in place to prevent it happening again, and tells its users and advertisers what they are, so that an informed decision can be made about future usage.

woodenbatandball · 04/02/2025 10:53

@Tsukiko this made me laugh! It's so true! Everyone's bad day/lack of caffeine/PMS/menopause is reflected in a Mumsnet post or comment somewhere xx

OP posts:
woodenbatandball · 04/02/2025 10:52

@pinkfondu I didn't post this to be helpful to you or anyone else that likes to open threads they don't agree with and comment on them.

I posted as I was in a discussion thread about what happened and Mumsnet then deleted the thread with zero explanation. So I was actually confused as to if the actual events even happened and the thread I had been part of was a hoax.

I am well within my rights to ask the question I did and post the topic. If those of you that are THAT offended by this post just move on.
For those of you who have offered helpful opinions and information. Thank you very much. I don't have an axe to grind, I was merely saying I think it is bad form not to make a formal statement (given all the posts and hear say). As others have kindly suggested, Mumsnet will probably be working hard behind the scenes on next steps.

For those of you that constantly feel the need to criticise me, please realise this is a forum made up of lots of different people who won't just post topics you love and agree with. I am sincerely sorry if this offended anyone. I stand by my original question. I hope you all have good days, good coffee - sending love to you all!

But this is HUGE. I think it's highly irresponsible to just keep deleting threads about this without commenting or signposting. They need to release an official statement. It puts everyone on this site in a vulnerable situation. What are they doing to rectify the problem.

I doubt you will receive an official statement.
This site primarily exists to make a lot of ad money, with links to the tabloids and so on.

The more people fight and tear each other's arseholes apart on MN, the richer they get, lol. They likely delete what might legally compromise them.

Weirdly this feels like you've missed some gossip and are feeling left out.

If you are actually angry and disgusted with mumsnet handling's of the situation may I suggest you delete the app and log out?

Instead of digging for media stories and reports from other posters.

Exactly this. You have an awful lot of opinions and strong emotions for someone who wasn't involved.

pinkfondu · 04/02/2025 10:40

Op it's very easy to contact mnhq if you really feel you aren't satisfied by what's been said or done note sure this is helpful

Turkeyneck101 · 04/02/2025 10:30

Was there a discussion about this on Radio 2 or 4 the other day. I caught the tail end of something about mumsnet but they seemed to be talking about AI...or maybe it was something altogether different. ?
