We’ve listened to your feedback! While many of you have enjoyed the ‘Thanks’ button, you also told us that you'd love more ways to express your feelings on the site.

Starting today, you now have the choice of four reactions:
‘Agree’, ‘Love’, ‘Funny’, and ‘Thanks’.

Here’s how it works:

  • Select the ‘React’ button underneath the OP or reply.
  • Choose the reaction that reflects how you feel about the post.
  • Reactions are private and are only visible to the post owner.
  • You can select one reaction per post.

We hope this gives you even more ways to engage with posts and share how you feel.

Let us know your thoughts or any questions in the comments below!

I’d love to know the breakdown on the length of time MNers have been MNers, and the feedback answers (if that makes sense!)

Been here about nine years now and I like them.

About 10 for me I think and I like them too.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 18/12/2024 15:35

Not a fan of this at all.

Thanks was good. It was a single click, it did the job, and had very little potential for using it to be mean to people.

snowyglobe · 18/12/2024 15:34

ABunchOfBadBitches · 18/12/2024 15:10

Genuine question - how old are you? My grandma is 71 and she’d be able to figure out which icon is which.

The hand clapping is ‘thanks.’ The thumbs up is ‘agree.’ The laughing face is very obviously ‘funny’ and the heart is obviously ‘love.’ You can also click on them and it’ll tell you which is which after you’ve pressed it…

I’m in my 40s, I work in UX design and I don’t think it’s obvious that clapping means thanks.

As a very long term MNer, I’ll be honest and my first thought after reading (and I’m genuinely sorry @KatyMumsnet, this really isn’t meant as a personal attack on you Grin) I read “we’ve listened to your feedback…you want more emojis to express your feelings” and my first thought is

oh fuck off
Blush

Mind you, I’m with @Fabulouslyunfabulous in that I think using any emoji other than MN supplied ones, is BU Xmas Wink And it took me ages to stop using Mumsnet Classic layout on my desktop PS, so I accept I’m just an old school dinosaur. Meh. Fuck it.

(and the Beta app is still shit and you can’t even see half the options so…)

TheChippendenSpook · 18/12/2024 15:06

Because people just like to moan for the sake of it.

You are the one moaning. People are expressing their opinions on a thread about emojis

Essentialblindspots · 18/12/2024 15:33

VictorianScreenTime · 18/12/2024 14:18

Ooh. I’m conflicted. I like the flexibility of more options but I felt the “thanks” was like a subtle but meaningful hand squeeze/head nod. I think it was more restrained and therefore more effective.

Ooh I didn’t realise it was meant to be a restrained hand squeeze or head nod!
I like the sound of that!

Tbh, I never quite understood if thanks meant “literally” thanks, or if it meant “like”, so I hesitated to use it.

I think that was the fundamental problem with it really.

I’d use thanks if op or another pp addressed me personally saying “you hit the nail on the head thanks for the advice” or something like that, but I wouldn’t use it if a pp just happened to write something I very much agreed with, because to me it would feel a bit awkward saying thank you for something that was addressed to everyone. Even though I wanted to ifyswim!

But I over-think these things massively 😄😬😬

AngelontopoftheTree · 18/12/2024 15:33

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/12/2024 14:35

Indeed @RegimentalSturgeon
(I have handclapped your post, in genuine agreement)

I thought hand clap 👏 is for Thanks, and thumbs up 👍 is for agree...... are we all going to be using them differently?

@janejeffer I've "thanked" you on this thread - can you see it?

UndeniablyGenX · 18/12/2024 15:33

I like them - 'thanks' didn't always feel like an accurate reaction; also like that the reactions you've received are more visible now on your posts.

Only feedback - is there any reason why we can't give more than one reaction to a post?

Kangarude · 18/12/2024 15:31

Sent you a reaction @EmeraldRoulette

ItOnlyTakesTwoMinutes · 18/12/2024 15:28

RoadToBeverly · 18/12/2024 14:14

But people will use the Laugh emoji to laugh at posts that aren't supposed to be funny in a bitchy way, as happens on Facebook. I think you should remove that one.

I agree with this.

DrSpartacular · 18/12/2024 15:27

Could they not at least have been MN emojis?

slightlydistrac · 18/12/2024 15:25

Cannotorwillnot · 18/12/2024 14:40

They look childish.

I agree about the need for something to show agreement but it makes Thanks and Love unnecessary. And why not something to show disagreement too? That could prevent a lot of nasty bickering. I would prefer a simple choice of Upvote or Downvote, and the ability for everyone to see the numbers of each (and the names if they wanted to). It would be good to know how many people agreed with each post I read.

(Incidentally, I hope the counting becomes more accurate. I frequently get emails telling me how many people have thanked me for a particular post, but then discover that the number shown on the post itself is, and remains, completely different.)

Edited

I found that too, it seems to tell you how many there are on all your posts on that particular thread, not your individual posts within it. Unless you only posted the OP and nothing else, it wasn't particularly helpful.

Wendysfriend · 18/12/2024 15:24

After all this we definitely need the middle finger

EmeraldRoulette · 18/12/2024 15:23

AlbertCamusflage · 18/12/2024 14:41

You can still thank! It is the default reaction#

A handclap isn't the same as thanks. If you type [ t h a n ks ] without the spaces, you get Thanks - which is a much gentler sentiment than the one suggested by clapping hands.
Surely people will use the handclap in order to convey the kind of tribal noise that MPs make in Parliament when polarising sentiments are voiced..

I live for the applause, applause, applause

<twerks vigorously>

can someone please react to this post so I can see what it looks like? Thanks. (I liked thanks). Just curious.

The comments are so dramatic, my God. You’d think you can no longer use the website anymore

Which given the post yours was immediately below, is funny in a sort of sick way.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/12/2024 15:21

ABunchOfBadBitches · 18/12/2024 15:07

So do you never use emojis? Because you’re grown up?

No, and yes.

AlbertCamusflage · 18/12/2024 15:20

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 18/12/2024 15:12

I’m still on the original mumsnet emojis Xmas Grin

Me too. Do you remember how people used to throw around the biscuit emoticon to express contempt? Everyone knew how nastily passive-aggressive that convention was. So they often posted "Here, have my very first Biscuit" -- to imply they weren't normally so snide but had been driven to it by the other poster's stupidity/wickedness.
Emoticons tend to drive us towards harsh pantomime reactions. And now that MN has become so unbelievably hostile it would be better not to encourage their use via this new device

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/12/2024 15:19

KatyMumsnet · 18/12/2024 14:55

When someone reacts to your post it is visible to you. You'll see the icons on your post and when you click them you'll see a breakdown of which reactions you've received and who did them!

I have to see everyone who thinks it's a good idea to send me a frog? What a horrid thought.

I will not be able to use the website as I have been used to. Do you sneer at people confined to wheelchairs as well, or is it just eyesight handicaps that you find hilarious?

AnyoneSomeone · 18/12/2024 15:17

The laughing one is the best one. Some posts on MN do make me laugh.

DreamW3aver · 18/12/2024 15:09

Why does a react button stop you reading your posts?

Coloured blobs in posts prevent me from reading them with any degree of comfort. I can and do avoid posts by other people who use them. Not being able to read my own posts would limit the value of the site for me.

Adding coloured emojis reduces the accessibility of the site. Reducing accessibility is usually seen as a bad thing.
