We’ve listened to your feedback! While many of you have enjoyed the ‘Thanks’ button, you also told us that you'd love more ways to express your feelings on the site.

Starting today, you now have the choice of four reactions:
‘Agree’, ‘Love’, ‘Funny’, and ‘Thanks’.

Here’s how it works:

  • Select the ‘React’ button underneath the OP or reply.
  • Choose the reaction that reflects how you feel about the post.
  • Reactions are private and are only visible to the post owner.
  • You can select one reaction per post.

We hope this gives you even more ways to engage with posts and share how you feel.

Let us know your thoughts or any questions in the comments below!

yes, I was about to ‘thank’ you then hesitated - this new form is clumsy, cumbersome, limited despite the ‘options’ I wouldnt voluntarily use such hideous icons anyway, being a grown up ?!

Agree.

Nothatgingerpirate · 18/12/2024 16:02

I like the heart ❤️ button as well, however, not one disagreement emoji!
Noticed in another thread, comments that didn't express direct support to the OP or take their side got deleted.

@Nothatgingerpirate this site tends to be self policing - replies which are offensive or personal attacks are removed, although several posters regularly skate close to the edge, pushing their luck and demolishing boundaries

UndeniablyGenX · 18/12/2024 15:51

But if people want to do that, they can already quote and post a 😂emoji, which is public.

Yeah but now you can laugh at someone in private, and no-one will know so can't stand up for the person being laughed at.

It could be a way to be a bully online with no-one else knowing.

saraclara · 18/12/2024 16:12

Yeah. I don't like it. The thanks was okay, and a mature way to show appreciation. But the applause emoji expresses something quite different, and the rest is just juvenile FB stuff.

BakeOffRewatch · 18/12/2024 16:12

The hands is “thanks”, thumbs up is “agree”, heart is “love” and laughing face is “funny” - those are the words that come up if you hold your finger over the images. I don’t see them otherwise.

BakeOffRewatch · 18/12/2024 16:09

I didn’t ask for it and don’t appreciate the new feature. The thanks wasn’t wanted either but wasn’t too intrusive. This is Facebook.

Samcro · 18/12/2024 16:08

thanks you . I like it.

ABunchOfBadBitches · 18/12/2024 15:07

So do you never use emojis? Because you’re grown up?

I didn’t say that - you are misquoting me but seeing as you ask, rarely and yes

I’d love to know the breakdown on the length of time MNers have been MNers, and the feedback answers (if that makes sense!)

Been here about nine years now and I like them.

Been here on and off for over 15 years and I like them. I do love an emoji though.

This. ^ Not sure how I feel about this sorry @KatyMumsnet The 'thanks' choice has gone too hasn't it?

How come this has happened? I never saw anyone asking for it.

Thanks is still there, I have just thanked your post.

Samcro · 18/12/2024 16:07

please can someone react to this post, just so I can see what happens.
thanks

There are ways and ways of disagreeing with an OP. Some are simply nasty, or offensive for any number of reasons, and need to be removed.

GrumpyCactus · 18/12/2024 14:21

Seems like a pretty unnecessary update, thanks worked fine for people acknowledging they agreed with your post.

It also seems odd to put out a new feature whilst ignoring the repeated issues of the site regularly freezing and having to close the browser down because it's frozen and the page is not responding. Surely that should be a priority over this update?

I disagree. Laughing at a post the poster didn't intend to be funny is bitchy. You see it on Facebook a lot.

TomatoAuberginePotatoTurnip · 18/12/2024 15:51

Maybe just a '✔' for agree would have been enough as well as the thanks.

The others will make the site too facebooky

FearOfTheDucks · 18/12/2024 15:48

I don't object to the idea of different reactions in principle but I think the laughing one is a bad idea. People will be using it mockingly, especially given how polarised discussion on MN can get. Using it to indicate that they think someone's political or religious view is laughable, for instance, or that they don't believe someone's anecdote. I think it'll be detrimental to the tone of the site.

I agree

SanFranByAir · 18/12/2024 15:44

Unsure. I felt thanks didn't fit many situations, just thanking someone for replying to my query. The laugh emoji is nice to show you've appreciated someone's humour, but as a pp mentioned it can be misused in the FB sense. The thumbs up, yeah time saving.
Glad there isn't an angry as the trolls will mine those. I'm not enthusiastic and upbeat enough for the clap (probably could have phrased that better).
We shall see.

AlbertCamusflage · 18/12/2024 14:34

Nice in principle, but the options seem to be:

  1. Tribal harrumph of approval
  2. Yeah ok.
  3. Aww hun xxx
  4. You are ridiculous.

All a bit harsh and parodical compared with the gentle 'thanks' option.

This. I don’t see this as an improvement.

EmeraldRoulette · 18/12/2024 15:40

Thanks to everyone who reacted to my post 😊

There you go, already had a "bitchy giggler" emoji on a post. Point proven

Just the thanks was good. No issues with that.
