We’ve listened to your feedback! While many of you have enjoyed the ‘Thanks’ button, you also told us that you'd love more ways to express your feelings on the site.

Starting today, you now have the choice of four reactions:
‘Agree’, ‘Love’, ‘Funny’, and ‘Thanks’.

Here’s how it works:

  • Select the ‘React’ button underneath the OP or reply.
  • Choose the reaction that reflects how you feel about the post.
  • Reactions are private and are only visible to the post owner.
  • You can select one reaction per post.

We hope this gives you even more ways to engage with posts and share how you feel.

Let us know your thoughts or any questions in the comments below!

This is a very regressive step. You should have left the 'laugh' function off. Part of what makes Facebook so toxic is the 'laughs' used by people who disagree with/want to goad you.

Bad move, Mumsnet. Very very bad move.

I would prefer you do changes that are actually worthwhile, like taking the time limit off editing.
And removing the 1000 post limit for threads, or at least extend it to 2500 or 5000. The amount of threads on here that fill up so quickly with people mindlessly posting congratulations or such to a person is ridiculous. There is a thread in AIBU that is up to Thread THREE, about to go to Thread four, about a woman who was cheated on and just had a baby. And its all because of literally hundreds of people all posting the same 'congratulations' mindlessly, not thinking that perhaps the OP doesn't want to read 800 posts saying the same fucking thing! Its beyond ridiculous. People just don't think. Another thread about a husband wanting his to pay him while she was on maternity leave filled up before the OP ever got a chance to reply as to how he talk went with her DH. Absolutely fucking ridiculous. Most were all mindlessly saying the same thing.

It's the ones who reply with 'F' that piss me off. Nothing else. Learn to bookmark and switch on notifications!!

When will the talk app improve? I can't do thanks at all. I can't vote on AIBU and I can't see all OP posts.

This. I don't use the desktop version at all.

AnyoneSomeone · 19/12/2024 07:00

Surely having reactions will stop all the 1000s of repetitive posts.

@KatyMumsnet please please please give me an easy way to not see these. I'm horrified to see that even 'thanks' left on the old system now appear as bright blue blobs. Let those of us who can't cope with that, opt out of getting them (and of seeing the old ones).

Yeah me too. The horrid emojis pop up when you're trying to read things. Can we have an emoji free version please?

Berniebear2507 · 19/12/2024 00:20

I would prefer just the simple chat rather than people seeing how many 'likes' or 'laughs' they can get..it's getting too much like Facebook now.

ErinBell01 · 19/12/2024 00:18

Thanks for letting me know that - I haven't experienced it personally, I took at face value what another poster said. Silly me, I should have checked it out myself.

What does Love mean? You are sending love to the person because they're having a bad time? Or you love what they've posted because it's clever, or very apt, or sums up the situation, or gives good advice? Or is it like the heart on twitter which just means 'I agree with you'? I can't use it unless we're all on the same page!
And why can't we see who has reacted to our post?
And why don't the reactions show up to other people?

You can see who’s reacted on your post, click the emojis and it shows who reacted

Well I like them - thank you

DreamW3aver · 18/12/2024 21:59

I don't know if you can change it but why would it matter if you accidentally clicked the wrong one, no one takes anonymous reactions as anything serious do they?

Errrrr, yeah they do. I'd never forgive you DreamW3aver if you gave me a like instead of a lol.

DreamW3aver · 18/12/2024 21:59

Mumistiredzzzz · 18/12/2024 20:09

What if you click the wrong one by mistake? You can't amend it.

You can turn off the notifications for them. I don't get any.

Thank you!

MintSpiesAtTheReddy · 18/12/2024 20:58

I like the change. I often had similar real life reactions to things I read and it feels quite nice to share them with the poster in the right spirit.

PiggyPigalle · 18/12/2024 20:36

I thought the previous thanks button was perfect as it covered everything.
If someone was funny, ironic, helpful or I just agreed, especially if it went against the tide. I would also use it to acknowledge a sad post, to say I read and I feel for you.

Just please never make a thanks button public as some want.
A money saving forum was one of the first and they had public thanks buttons back then.
Society twenty years ago was far more polite than now but it brought out some horrible traits in posters.
Begging for thanks and coming back on to chastise a poster for not thanking them were just two.

KarenAndSusanAreMyBesties · 18/12/2024 20:36

RoadToBeverly · 18/12/2024 15:42

I disagree. Laughing at a post the poster didn't intend to be funny is bitchy. You see it on Facebook a lot.

I disagree. The writer may not intend to be funny, but the words used could may well amuse the reader. I’d always see it as a positive in a I’m glad I brightened your day, kind of a way.

All the emojis are positive ones. That is a good thing. If somebody is the sort of person who uses such things aggressively, then of course they will see and perceive aggression in others, even when there is none.

The one thing I would hate to see is a thumbs down, or any other expression of negativity. If a reader wants to object to or dislikes a post, then use your words to reply. The emojis we’ve been given are good, positive ones.

As some others have said, I’d like to see another reaction to show sympathy/empathy - a hug, maybe?

Having said all that, I think things are being made unnecessarily complicated. I am in the camp of ‘meh, whatever’. The simple ‘thanks’ was enough to give thanks/I agree/support/encouragement.

You can. Or take it away entirely

MN sends the email unless you say you don’t want them 😂

Bloody hell. I must have clicked on something merciful.

LetGoLetThem1234 · 18/12/2024 20:07

The range seems quite narrow.

I would like to commiserate, or show empathy please.

Also to disagree.

I want an angry one

You allowed thanks to your email? I hope this is ultimate troll.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/12/2024 19:50

The trouble with that is that people would compete for likes. And twerps would have people they liked and always applauded performatively.

I think we got along very nicely without any of this, the "thanks" button included – and if I wanted to say thank you to someone, or agree with a particular post, well, rather than clicking on a button for a cheap, effortless and essentially brainless grunt of a comment I could always write the words "I agree" or "thank you" or "that's really interesting" in a reply.

Edited

It’s handy for the Wordle thread and things like that rather than thanking everyone on the thread

justasking111 · 18/12/2024 20:04

I never used the thanks button. Anyone who thanks me does appear in my email
