Board for high earners

I think MN should capitalise on the high earners and DWs of high earners by making a separate subscription-only area providing a safe space for discussing +£400 watches, comparing what their DHs earn and give stealth boasts about little Hugo's tuition fees and how painfully long the school holidays are.

I'd hope the benefit could be extended to us plebs in reducing the number of random weird ads on the rest of the site.

I'm a "high earner" btw no poverty chip on my shoulder.

Maybe Mumsnet should just be split into multiple Mumsnets, and you have to show proof of income so they can pop you in the right version?

Seems like maybe splitting by wealth is a really stupid idea.

There's an "investments" board for those who want to discuss investments. And various very helpful career boards. And the property boards are usually pretty good too

But yeah, if you post something tone deaf you can expect to be called out for it

The reality is that anyone on here can expect a pile on. People are told to expect 'robust' responses on AIBU but even when people post about really difficult personal/financial situations on Relationships, they get incredibly unkind and judgemental responses.

A separate board for high earners can't ban people on low or no incomes from posting. I presume that most people wouldn't go looking for the board, but if a thread becomes particularly heated, it will appearing on the Trending list.

If there is a case for stronger moderation and banning rules, it should apply to the whole of Mumsnet and not just a High Earners board. I don't think that most people would want that.

It won't work - you'll still get the comments, as this thread has shown. Especially if it ends up on 'trending' - it will then get treated as if it is in AIBU.

Just shield it from showing up in active like they do with other boards.

A lot of the threads where people get abuse seems to stem from overestimating the immediate lifestyle they expect from a higher salary and then moaning about it - especially first generation higher earners.

Most questions can be answered with some research and if not then financial advice and planning can be paid for, and probably should be.

Yeah, the high earners already monopolise AIBU, so I'm all for a board to keep them away from the rest of us, with their sneery '£400 is cheap for a watch' derailing comments. But MN needs to be more proactive in shifting stuff out of AIBU into the appropriate boards too.

There is a whole topic for discussing Private Education yet all the posts about VAT seem to be being put in aibu

Seems we have other people requestng boards, just remember back in the day they gave the topic sex its own board because people didnt want sex topics mixed with general threads, so if they can give sex its own board then why not finance

but at the same time others have been quick to join threads in the already available topic groups and soon as some high earner asks about finances various people that cannot behave soon get the violins out, so its about time for better behaviour from the low earners too if they want the high earners to be more thoughtful with their questions

I think it's a good idea. There should be a space where high earners can discuss without snarky comments.

I think you’ve nailed it. Better moderation. Pile ons aren’t a special pain to wealthy posters, fat women and women in receipt of benefits have had a right old bashing today for example.

I didn’t mean offering sympathy. Perhaps I should have used receptive or open to discussion or something else entirely.

But the reality is that anyone with a higher income can expect a pile on. It wasn’t the case a couple of years ago, but it is now, for exactly the reasons you state, and that I alluded to up-thread.

Personally I would just prefer better moderation, as several have suggested. But if that were the reality then a load of posts in this thread would have been deleted.

Not at all. Not one person has said ‘the wealthy may not speak’. I think what we are saying is that asking for a special place so high earners may speak separately from those of us on low, median, or even significantly above median incomes is pretty crass.
