Why aren’t you banning the far-right agitators?

Deleting their posts but allowing them to keep inciting racial hatred under the same accounts is making the site unusable. Why should we keep reporting them if you’re not going to do anything meaningful about it?

🤣

@KreedKafer you win thread by virtue of finest, funniest argument.

‘woke’ and ‘north London’ are not anti-Semitic or racist code. They’re used adjectivally to rib drippy liberals, of which I am one.

Paranoid Prejudice Hunters - if you care, why not do something irl to help victims? No, thought not.

@BeckyAMumsnet there is a problem with inconsistent moderation at times. Sometimes the racist/right wing disinformation posts will be zapped, other times we will be told we should "challenge" them.

100% agree with this
I have also had one of my posts removed for calling a racist comment or racist even though the racist comments made by said racist poster was removed as hate speech!

KreedKafer · 30/07/2024 13:44

I think the issue is that Mumsnet is really, really bad at spotting the kind of dog-whistle racism that extremist posters sometimes use. So they will ban someone who posts 'AIBU to think that most [people from specific ethnic group] are rapists?' but they won't ban someone who posts a blatantly fabricated post about how they took in a refugee who claims benefits despite being a millionaire, refuses to work, slags off Britain all the time, demands that her daughters cover their hair in presence and calls her a cunt every morning at breakfast.

The other hugely important thing about last night’s agitators was the threat to the judicial process. It’s essential that the perpetrator faces justice, whether that’s lengthy imprisonment or involuntary treatment for a psychiatric illness. It is not difficult to spot who does and who does not care about the importance of a fair trial and a safe conviction.

Absolutely. There are reporting restrictions for a reason.

Verysadcase - That still amount to censorship. Have you not read the above discussion? What amounts to "rascist" can be subjective. You end up making people wary of discussing anything substantive for fear of having the finger pointed at them. It is reductive and not helpfully to open debate.

These Boards are moderated by MNHQ. They get to decide which posts stand and which don't, and which posters get permanently banned. The rest of us get to decide whether the way in which Boards are moderated is acceptable to us or not.

If people are unhappy that insufficient action is being taken to combat racism, they can leave. Several posters have indicated that they are considering this.

If people feel that debate is being shut down by over-zealous moderation, they too can leave and take their discussion elsewhere.

Nobody has an absolute right to "free speech" on these boards. Ultimately, it is a business decision for MNHQ that they will take in line with their values as a company and with consideration of the impact on the business. Those of us who don't want the place to be taken over by far right racists are simply making our feelings clear.

GoldMedallist · 30/07/2024 13:18

Generally I’m not a fan of censorship but there is a difference between a discussion of opposing views in good faith and a concerted campaign to ignite racial or religious tensions.

For example last night a name was circulating that was as ridiculous as Johnny Jiggle-Wiggle sounds in English along with falsehoods about said Johnny Jiggle-Wiggle arriving illegally via dinghy last year when in fact the actual perpetrator was born here to parents who had come from a predominantly Christian country.

This. Free speech is all very well but when a platform is becoming a breeding ground to encourage or spread hate towards immigrants or other minority groups, then I'm all for a strong level of moderation. Because these comments then play out in real life.

Yes the name was ridiculous and it was mad to see how many people were jumping on that and also the dinghy rumour, like it was gospel.

Dancingontheedge · 30/07/2024 13:29

The problem is that it’s a delicate balancing act. Yes, racist posts should not stand. But when facts come out that then seem to validate people’s fears, the racists then take a stance of ‘See, we told you and ‘they’ tried to stop us telling the truth’
And the fact that all the suspicions, claims and accusations happened before the facts is forgotten by many. Only the idea that others are using the label ‘racist’ to shut down those expressing concerns.
All some will focus on is that the killer is the child of Rwandan refugees who settled in Cardiff and moved to Southport. That will be enough to fan the flames.

We discussed that a little further up the thread, but I started this conversation in response to an influx of far right agitators. In the past I’ve raised similar concerns about far left antisemitism, although I’ve largely given up on that as MNHQ show far less will to challenge it.

It seems to be heading that way.

Piggywaspushed · 30/07/2024 13:27

OP, sadly what was inevitable was that posters would land on your thread to tell you you are wrong.

No site should want to be targeted by agitators.

Piggywaspushed · 30/07/2024 13:25

Dancingmonkeyfeet · 30/07/2024 12:12

Of the posts you’ve been reporting

OK, so referring to ' their type' , to calling people 'woke leftie commies' to referring to 'North London' pejoratively, deliberate clouded references to 'Cultural Marxism', linking to banned films etc. Describing all adherents of one race or belief as being the same. Posting and spreading fake statistics or inaccuracies, deliberately.

I am referring to a different thread than OP.

With some of these, unless you knew they were anti semitic tropes you'd be none the wiser but that's part of the point.

I've also recently seen a rise in fairly overt homophobia.

Once you let it slide, MN becomes easy pickings and a target site for spreading ideologies.

I agree the moderation is inconsistent. Antisemitism is often allowed to stand along with ageist, disablist and racist material. It’s not perfect here, or anywhere.

Look at what was being widely reported about Prevent by national broadsheet newspapers earlier this year following the Shawcross review, a journalist (Fraser Nelson) who writes in the Spectator was branded as being far right by civil servants working for Prevent. I read his column every week: he is sensible, balanced and not far-right. There is a real danger to our as society, if political correctness causes us to be incapable of calling out jihadist and fundamental islamists for fear of being called racist. Go down that route and you will see the growth of the far-right as a reaction to censorship and accusations of islamophobia.

Yes I really agree with this.

Teentaxidriver · 30/07/2024 13:10

So, OP is the posts have been deleted, what is the problem?? Sounds as though you'd like to cherry pick who is allowed to post and who is not. That smacks of censorship, no?

No, not really.
The talk guidelines are pretty clear. If a user persistently and repeatedly breaks those guidelines then MNHQ is perfectly correct to remove their membership of the site.

whataclownshow · 30/07/2024 13:13

@Dancingmonkeyfeet So if posters were making assumptions that a criminal must have been of a certain ethnicity before anyone knew anything about them, would you not agree that's pretty racist? And then devoting pages trying to argue they can't have been 'home grown' actually, when the only thing that's been disclosed is where he's from in the UK - would you not consider that racist too? Because that's what was happening, when the discussing could and should have been centred on how awful the attack actually was and the families of the victims, rather than obsessing over whether the attacker was born here, there or wherever.

The posts were deleted but the accounts were not banned at the time of this OP so they continued inciting hatred.

If people are repeatedly posting racist material that has to be deleted, I have no issue with "censoring" those posters personally.

GoldMedallist · 30/07/2024 13:11

Dancingmonkeyfeet · 30/07/2024 12:56

No I'm asking for examples not screen shots or exact replicas.

For example - a poster discussing issues that happen in a persons home country then that person doing the same here - would be classed as racist by some. When in fact there is a valid correlation and normal for people to discuss.

If it was a post that was humiliating or degrading a person on the colour of their skin or ethnicity then - yes I agree it was racism.

I could start a thread and say ‘last night that thread was awful and MN had to delete lots of posts’

But OP hasn’t give any indication what kind of posts or thread - just ‘racism’. Or even if posts were actually deleted.

I don’t buy in to the narrative that everyone is racist or every one is far right on here because MN is typically left wing. This is not X and posts get shut down pretty quick IME

There was an influx of far right agitators last night, not very subtle, using yesterday’s awful news from Southport to spread hostility and lies about asylum seekers in general. You would know it if you saw it I’m sure. I’m no sympathiser with or apologist for Islamists, I just prefer the facts to get in the way of prejudice.
