Why do you allow people to attack and ridicule Christianity?

Singersong · 18/07/2024 06:45

Time and time again I see people taking the absolute piss out of Christianity. Calling people delusional and saying it's made up bullshit etc. why do you allow this? I don't see this about any other religion.

It goes far beyond atheism and you claim to be against hate speech.

What?

You are entitled to voice your point of view. I must admit I do not follow your logic, but there you are. Weird that you would think that my sharing my thoughts 'controls' anything - it is utterly bizarre. Weird that would you think I would want some sort of 'safe' space? It's not an idea I've expressed.

Are you the OP though?

Isn’t this whole thread about wanting to make the whole world as safe for christians as it is presumed to be for those lucky jews, muslims, and hindus whose wives are never attacked for their clothing, whose holy books are never torn up or defiled, whose identity as british citizens is never questioned?

@Thegreatestoftheseislove
@Werweisswohin and @CurlewKate Thank you for your suggestions. I did say in my post that I am not calling for one. I don't feel the need. If I did I would have already "

Does that mean you actually don't want a safe space to discuss matters of Christian faith without any debate-you just want to be able to control what people say on the main board? Because that's exactly how it looks.

@bryceQ

You're entitled to think that, I did a degree and masters in history and it's still my opinion that something so pivotal to who we are as a nation is something to have respect for.

Slavery is pivotal to our history in the UK but hopefully you're happy to condemn slavery rather than show respect for it? Fingers crossed.

Is "I think you are deluded" hate speech?

I can only answer for myself, but for me it's not, just a statement of fact.
Remove the 'I think' though, as people often do, and while not hate speech it does become offensive imo.

I was replying to someone else who wrote “. Do you feel better that I think you’re all the same level of mad/sad/pathetic?”
I think that is “pejorative language to an individual or group” ( ie “hate speech”)

I wouldn't use those exact words however I do question why (some)
people are so ready to buy into myths and stories and religious belief systems.

Expressing an opinion isn't in itself discrimation.

I notice that you have left out the part written after that "However, to date there is no universal definition of hate speech under international human rights law. The concept is still under discussion, especially in relation to freedom of opinion and expression, non-discrimination and equality."
And this bit "It’s important to note that hate speech can only be directed at individuals or groups of individuals. It does not include communication about States and their offices, symbols or public officials, nor about religious leaders or tenets of faith."

And? It doesn’t change the meaning of the words quoted imo

The UN definition of hate speech
To provide a unified framework for the United Nations to address the issue globally, the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech defines hate speech as…“any kind of communication in speech, writing or behaviour, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are, in other words, based on their religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, colour, descent, gender or other identity factor.….
Hate speech is “discriminatory”(biased, bigoted or intolerant) or “pejorative” (prejudiced, contemptuous or demeaning) of an individual or group.

I personally tend not to use deluded/shy fairy type language. But I can certainly see why people do. And I am definitely not prepared to go along with people's beliefs. I did the "some people believe" with my children.

CurlewKate · 21/07/2024 17:37

@Singersong has anyone said there shouldn't be nativity plays?

Don’t think we have a state religion… all religions are fairy tails for grown ups. Do you feel better @Singersong that I think you’re all the same level of mad/sad/pathetic?

This is a Christian country. But yes, all other major religions are discussed and celebrated in schools. Well at least, they are around here. A lot of time was spend on Diwali/Eid.

How is it you think that they shouldn't do a nativity play but I assume you have no problem with them celebrating Christmas. Knowledge is power. As children we are taught the religion of this country so that as adults we have the knowledge to decide whether or not to follow that faith.

And, asking why there isn’t a Christian board when there is Muslim and Jewish boards is like asking why there isn’t a white mumsnetters board when there is a black one, or why there isn’t and English board when there is are Scottish and Irish ones.

Nice dodge.
Believe what you like, just don't try ti exempt it from questioning.

"Nice dodge" in response to "I am not going to try and convince you otherwise." So, forgive me my confusion and slight amusement here ... you've made many posts here complaining about Christians trying to convert folk, and insisting on your right to call the Lord God Almighty, amongst other things, a 'sky fairy' and you also state that all Christians are delusional, but then appear to complain when this Christian, in this instance, does want to discuss matters of faith with you, by calling it a 'nice dodge'. 😆 I see the irony, it's not lost on me.

If you started a thread about sky fairies and delusion, then I may, or may not, decide to join the debate. However, that is not the topic started by the opening poster. The topic was about perceived unfairness and inequality.

In that case you cannot expect not to face differences of opinion on the main boards.

Eh? I merely made an observation. I think maybe you're wanting to see an argument where there wasn't one.🙂

Much better than swearing at people and then trying to edit it out.

What’s so wrong with swearing on mumsnet?
And what’s wrong with having second thoughts and editing a post?
Let it go …. 😆

“I think there does need to be a level of understanding though that works both ways, great for you if religion has been kind to you but understand that religion has in the past and continues to actively harm people, those hurt people are everywhere and sometimes it just isn't possible for them to act with the grace you might like them to.“
This is very well put .

I think it can be a difficult one. I'm in Ireland and there are a lot of people here still trying to heal from the harm caused by organised religion. There is a lot of anger and hurt directed towards the church. My best friend was adopted from a mother and baby home, my dhs uncle was abused in an industrial school, I had a really awful experience caused by the archaic abortion laws we had, all of these are because of organised religion.

There is generational trauma and some people will lash out because of that. I've mellowed a bit with age but I would be lying if I said I could ever understand why people continue to support the Catholic Church. I do view organised religion with suspicion, I never iniate conversations around religion though and would keep my trap shut unless asked. I think there does need to be a level of understanding though that works both ways, great for you if religion has been kind to you but understand that religion has in the past and continues to actively harm people, those hurt people are everywhere and sometimes it just isn't possible for them to act with the grace you might like them to.
