I would say that the general understanding is that if you want to reply to someone specific (e.g. bunfight) you reply to that person. All other replies are for the OP.

I do know how MN works. And if I want to quote and reply directly to the OP then I will carry on doing so.

Precisely. It's not comparable. It's a mete website of opinions, not a 1:1 conversation. Completely different.

I guess depending on how you access the website different formats are seen.

I think it's safe to assume that EVERY post is a reply to the OP unless it states otherwise.

I'd love to hear your rationale behind quoting the OP. When having a conversation with someone, do you also repeat back everything they've said before replying?

Disagree. Sometimes a thread moves in a completely different direction, so it's reasonable to indicate you are responding to the original point, not things the OP might have said since on tangential topics.

Chances are you can do that just by copying and pasting the salient part of the OP, not the whole thing.

Why? It's literally less than a thumbstroke upthread.

I can never be bothered to check the Posters name to see if it's always the same person, but it annoys me immensely.

It's tedious scrolling by a really long page full of the exact same block of text repeated over and over and over again, often spanning more than one screen in length, trying to spot what's new in between. Fair enough if that's what you actually enjoy doing with your time but I think it's fine for people to suggest ways to avoid it.
