Disability hate on MN

IClaudine · 02/05/2024 13:31

Hi MNHQ

Since Sunak’s announcement on disability benefits, there has been a big increase on MN in hostility towards people who receive then.

The abuse, hate and outright lies (my neighbour’s son’s cousin’s wife climbs Mount Everest but gets PIP etc) being spewed on MN towards disabled people, a group with protected characteristics, has been dreadful and very distressing for disabled people and their loved ones to read,

Please can you do something?

Here is a small selection of the threads where the disability benefit bashers have paid a visit and had a field day. There may be more, but I can’t face searching for them!

Morning, everyone. Thanks to all of you who reported threads and posts that were concerning you here.

We understand that discussions around benefits can be emotive ones, especially for those who are in the position of needing to use that system and cope with all the frustrations that go along with it, on top of having disabilities that already make life more difficult than it should be.

As moderators, however, our role is not to delete based on whether we agree with the sentiment or not but on whether posts are within our Talk guidelines. We will always delete posts that are clearly disablist in tone or content but often posts that might be perceived to be ableist or benefits bashing don't actually break our guidelines. We do allow posters to express critical opinions on public policy or personal experience so long as those posts don't become too personal or otherwise cross the line into abuse or discrimination.

Context is always important, too. While we might allow people to express their frustration at the benefits system, for example, we would probably not allow posts that targeted individuals or were generally discriminatory or dehumanising in tone, and we would look at the path a discussion has taken before making a decision.

We do understand the frustration it can cause when you have taken the time to report and a post is then not deleted but we will always try to explain why and you're always welcome to ask about why a decision was taken. Hitting the report button and letting us know that you're concerned a post is discriminatory should take only a few seconds and we usually don't see problematic posts unless they are reported to us so it really is worth doing. It also helps us to build a picture, particularly if there are 'bad actors' at work, whose posts may not individually break Talk guidelines but, with reports, we can begin to build up a picture of their posting pattern.

We hope that helps at least give a clearer picture of how things work.

How about when they are including verifiably false information? Which is a common feature of the worst of these posts. Individual posters disagreeing does not hold the weight of a platform invoked fact checker or similar.

The amount of simply false information posted here, especially (but not only) on benefits and disability seems to have escalated in recent years. I dare say its related to the more populist parties promote huge quantities of bitesize false information (its always easier to post clickbait nonsense and promise easy solutions than deal with a complex situation).

ConcernedForWales · 29/04/2026 11:51

Hi @KellyMumsnet thanks for that.

Could I ask a follow up question, please? In MNHQ's opinion, is it acceptable for a poster to disclose the personal details of a third party, including financial and medical details, to the extent that the third party would easily recognise themselves or be recognised by someone who knows them? This is the thread in question:

This is very sad and shows the effect of allowing disability hate to thrive on SM:

Morning @PandoraSocks (and others). Thanks for flagging this again. Could you report any of those threads you mention? We'll happily have a look behind the scenes and make sure they're above board.

I have just reported a thread that has descended into really disgusting, dehumanising benefit bashing. Let's see what happens.

PandoraSocks · 13/04/2026 17:50

I reported a post recently for benefit bashing which was deleted but then reinstated for some reason.

ValleyClouds · 13/04/2026 16:26

@Piggywaspushedive just reported two posts on the one thread, they’re benefit bashing and laughing at fatties, they’re both still standing

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2026 16:11

I reported a thread copied and pasted from Robert Jenrick's Facebook page. Totally disingenuous and falsely used by an OP pretending to be the originator of the 'thoughts'. That was left to run despite one of the reporting categories being 'not a genuine poster'.

On the Scottish Reform voting website there have been multiple references to 'genuine disability'. I am sure this doesn't meet a deletion threshold , even though it is clear ableism.

PandoraSocks · 13/04/2026 11:16

ValleyClouds · 13/04/2026 11:10

Since when have MNHQ ever cared about ableism except to class it as justified debate and dismiss disabled posters?

The fact that this thread was started nearly two years ago and nothing has changed speaks volumes.

As an example, this is one of at least two threads on this particular issue. Mnhq were aware of it, but it was allowed to keep going.

Hi Kelly. Thanks for responding. A few of the threads have run their course now and mnhq must be aware of the ones still running as there have been deleted posts etc.

With the greatest respect, I have found mnhq rarely delete benefit bashing threads so I don't bother reporting them now.

Thanks Kelly, I agree with others that it's getting worse with people repeatedly stating that disability benefits are easy to get, despite being told otherwise, and inferring that those in receipt are therefore on the make. It does feel like there is a concerted attempt to influence and shift public opinion against disabled people.

Crikeyalmighty · 13/04/2026 10:19

You might want to take a look if doubtful that things are ‘orchestrated’ Matthew Goodwin ( and other prominent right wing influencers ) were being paid up to £10,000 a month regularly to speak and basically ‘agitate’ —-all funded through Victor orbans gvt and Hungary - no doubt originated from Russia , but using Hungary to get round rules. There are lots of features about this if you google it , all under the disguise of what initially looks like a university but is actually just a right wing agitation ‘think tank’ I’m not saying people can’t have these views , but do at least be up front that you are being very healthily paid to push these views so have a very big motivator to keep it going - absolutely rife in the USA too . Hence why you have all these well dressed clean cut glam looking people pushing that agenda-

Absolutely.

I feel as though the poster with a "different opinion" has derailed the thread.
It's a shame, we shouldn't let it happen.

However, I'm not surprised. We get this sort of thing all the time don't we?
Hence the title of this thread.

I am not sure to whom you refer, nor how they have expressed a ‘different opinion’.

From my side, I intend to only post in line with the thread topic, as requested (providing everyone else does, of course!) My knowledge of cookery chiefly extends to a microwave….😁

Careful folks, we don't want to give MNHQ any reasons to pull the thread.

Thanks.

Or just do as everyone has asked. How about that?
