Banner advert in the app

Hi MNHQ,

There's a banner ad appearing in the ap (at the top) that makes the app visually really annoying to navigate. Will it be there permanently? It would be less bad at the bottom! Thanks!

Any update on this? I had sort of managed to cope with this for a while as I got the static mumsnet banner 99% of the time but today it's changed back to a moving gambling ad. Really hoped this has been resolved.

prettybird · 05/06/2024 10:27

Not noticed a single difference in the supposedly "new" app Confused

I even went and double-checked that I was indeed on the "new" app Hmm. I am. HmmConfused

SnowFrogJelly · 05/06/2024 10:15

@BeckyAMumsnet

Why mention the update when it makes no difference at all? Still the same annoying moving ads at the top of the page

lmjh · 04/06/2024 21:27

Exact same here

Tallisker · 04/06/2024 10:56

Yes, very similar for me too. The monopoly ad is still there but no longer bounces up and down, just moves from side to side. And there's another similar one for more gambling. I switched away in disgust so I can't remember what it was advertising. I don't want to see any ads for gambling at all, ever.

Hi everyone - if you're an Apple user - we've released a new version of the iOS app today, which includes some changes to how ads are displayed including banner ads. The ads should no longer refresh as frequently as before, which should reduce the 'flashing'. Please update to the latest version in the App store.

Just updated.. it's exactly the same!

Tallisker · 03/06/2024 17:38

Hi @LilyMumsnet screenshot attached. Obvs it doesn't show it bobbing up and down annoyingly Grin

The Monopoly one is still there, please get rid. Please. It is headache-inducing and bloody awful, pinging up and down.

Hello,

Please could you screenshot this advert for us so we can see?

@MNHQ

Would it be possible to just get rid of the moving ads.. they drive me batty

JaneJeffer · 29/05/2024 14:41

Seems the ads are on the rampage. Surely there's a solution beyond reporting them all individually @HebeMumsnet?

@HebeMumsnet

Thanks for the (unusually!) quick reply.

But you must see that you have in no way addressed the issue? So giving a supposedly helpful description of the problem and essentially saying 'sure, we can't do anything about it' is not addressing it?

On no other application that I use have I encountered this combination of issues (usability + screen space + type of ad).

I keep saying that fortunately, it means I spend much less time on MN - which is getting increasingly unpleasant, though there's obviously still great posters and useful information embedded within it.

How can it make business sense to just accept that you have created a platform that's mostly unusable, that you cannot fix and the only remedy is a new app (much talked about over a period of time)?

I think I've realised that there's no solution or any idea in MNHQ how to achieve one. In your update post (yes, the convoluted one!) you said: but once an issue is reported to us, we take immediate action to track and block anything offensive or otherwise unsuitable.

It seems mad that you rely on users to let you know - so surely now you know the Monopoly ads appear, and have been emailed many times about them - why are they still there?

Have you no internal testing processes? You can't just say, we'll hope for the best with this programmatic advertising - can you?

I think I'm done with trying to report it and ask for the issues to be addressed, and will leave the thread here.

HebeMumsnet · 29/05/2024 10:56

Morning @EarringsandLipstick . We're sorry you found the explanation convoluted. We'd hoped that giving as much info as possible would help our members in understanding that there unfortunately isn't a one-step simple fix for this, and also in letting them know what practical steps they could take to get rid of the ads.

If you see one of these adverts again, you can send us the url to the ad and we can then block the ad at source. It won't stop more appearing, as we say, but the more we can block the quicker we can hopefully resolve the issue as a whole.

Thank you.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/05/2024 07:14

THE GAMBLING ADS ARE STILL THERE

@mnhq @HebeMumsnet @BeckyAMumsnet @LilyMumsnet

So your convoluted explanation didn't mean much. And again, you've vanished from the thread.

(And all the same points remain re usability, moving ads, size, placement etc). It's so bad.

SnowFrogJelly · 28/05/2024 10:04

I've had a tile advert up there for days.. it's driving me mad because it moves all the time, could we just get rid of these ads please

MermaidEyes · 25/05/2024 10:38

Haha as if I've just had a little box pop up asking if I like the new Mumsnet app 😆 My answer? No not really 🤣

EarringsandLipstick · 24/05/2024 04:26

BeckyAMumsnet · 23/05/2024 12:24

@RainbowConnection1 we're rebuilding the app!

Hmmm 🤔

I mean, I'm still seeing all the same gambling, scrolling ads, which are a) inappropriate and b) making the app unusable. So despite your convoluted explanations, you have completely failed to sort the issue.

I've never seen another app have the same ad-related issues, it just doesn't make sense.

You talk about 'rebuilding' the app but you don't seem to have a clue what the issues are, have terrible developers and refuse to listen to your users or reply in any professional way.

Endlessly you are told that using the app drains batteries, it's never been addressed. The replies on that are just hookum.

From a business sense, your approach is really silly.

If other organisations using apps can avoid these peculiar, inappropriate, user-unfriendly ads, of course you can. Weeks and weeks later - nothing has changed. This evening all I'm seeing is the Monopoly dancing dice! I don't mind about ads, I get they are needed - but not so they make the app unusable and not so they are completely contrary to MN's brand and ethos.

I'd be so disappointed if I worked for an organisation totally unable to address significant issues like this.

Tallisker · 23/05/2024 17:03

Please rebuild it without the horrible banner ads.

SnowFrogJelly · 23/05/2024 13:44

The ones that keep moving drive me nuts.. it's a bad idea

BeckyAMumsnet · 23/05/2024 12:24

@RainbowConnection1 we're rebuilding the app!

RainbowConnection1 · 22/05/2024 07:30

Tell us you want to get rid of the app without telling us 🙄.

KnottyKnitting · 22/05/2024 00:30

You are not listening- the banner ad makes the app on the I pad totally unusable.

It took me 7 attempts to open the app earlier and when it finally worked the threads just idled and needed to be closed a number of times before they would open properly!

Also explain why the app is making devices hot and draining the battery?

teacher342 · 20/05/2024 17:52

Thank you for this. Whilst I don't like the banner ads at all I can live with the mainly static, non-gambling ones I mostly have now. I can understand your rationale being financial to an extent as most of us do not pay for this site, although I neither read not click on ads more in the banner position, so I am not totally clear how it makes you more money - do they pay extra to have it at the top? It's a shame you didn't post this several weeks ago. Users would be a lot less aggrieved if they understood and felt listened to.

BeckyAMumsnet · 20/05/2024 17:08

Thanks to everyone who reported the strange Keir ad – it should no longer appear - but we want to clarify how these ads make their way onto the site in the first place. We use programmatic advertising, which means that ads are automatically selected and placed by an algorithm, often through real-time bidding systems. We do not decide what ads to show or not show aside from our filters (which we’ll get to shortly). This process allows advertisers to bid for ad space in a fraction of a second. While this system is efficient and helps keep our site free by generating revenue, it also has some drawbacks.

We have filters in place to block the kinds of ads we don’t want, but tactics are constantly evolving to bypass these filters, and advertisers develop methods to get around our barriers. This is an issue faced by every site that uses programmatic ads, but once an issue is reported to us, we take immediate action to track and block anything offensive or otherwise unsuitable. We’re also developing processes to make this more efficient and easier for users to report.

We have a block on certain gambling ads, but because some have been categorised differently by Google, they appear on the site. We’re continuing to work on this as we agree it’s unacceptable to see those ads, especially on certain boards. In the meantime, it’s a case of playing whack-a-mole, so if you see one, please let us know and share the URL or the app so we can block the advertiser directly at the source.

We’ve introduced the banner ad on the app, to try to increase visibility of the ad format. We make far less money from app ads than from ads on the mobile site and it costs us far more to support the app than we make in revenue from it. This current ad placement helps with that, although not so much as to make the app anything other than a cost centre. We are also in the process of rebuilding our Talk apps - Android and IoS, set for release in the Autumn. As part of this, we are continuously evaluating the app's design and user feedback to find the best balance between user experience and the financial sustainability of the app. We’d rather not make it a subscription-only product though as we’re aware that not everyone has the means to pay for it. As always, your feedback is welcome, and we do take it into consideration, even if we may not be able to do everything that is asked of us.

Thank you.
