Shit, blood, injuries, genitals

AnxiousPangolin · 29/11/2023 20:44

Please, for the sake of all of our eyes, can we have an outright ban on people posting photos of shit, period blood clots, injuries and most of all, photos of their skanky genitals?

No-one, apart from the OP’s doctor, needs to see this stuff and it’s frankly revolting. MN is not a fucking hospital, people should go to their doctor or A&E. It’s also a magnet for perverts.

I also sent a picture to my GP recently and there was a warning saying to not include a picture of an anus, breasts or any genitals. I really don’t understand why uploading these sorts of pictures are allowed on here, it’s weird.

Its weird is completely right! And also, how can Mumsnetters diagnose or advise (if the intention is honestly genuine - which I doubt in all cases). Go to the GP if you're worried!!

For those saying ‘just don’t click on the thread,’ it’s not always that simple. I find that a lot of people don’t actually make it clear from the title what they’re talking about. Someone can start a thread on AIBU with the title, ‘AIBU to not know what this is’ and you don’t know what the heck you’ll see. It could be a mum posting about pills found in their teenagers bedroom or a mum posting their arsehole. It’s not always clear that you’ll click on a thread and straight away, someone’s there spreading their vaj lips. It’s a lot

TiptoeTess · 13/12/2023 09:01

I think people should be able to post images that are sensitive and seek advice.

When you add an image through the web browser, there is a small box that comes up where you can tick to say it’s a sensitive image. It isn’t massive though and there’s no guidance- could the text label be extended to say “if your image contains xyz, you must tick this before posting” and explain what filter will be applied?

I don’t have the app so I don’t know the equivalent on there.

BeckyAMumsnet · 09/12/2023 15:20

@slipperypenguin we can see you reported an image on 29/11 at 9:43 pm and we responded at 9:55 pm. You may wish to check your junk folder in case our response has gone in there. If you've reported anything since then we're afraid we didn't receive it.

slipperypenguin · 08/12/2023 23:41

@LilyMumsnet as I have reported twice separately and also mentioned in this thread - there is threads thought that really don't seem genuine where there is repeatedly over graphic pictures being posted that don't make sense. I have yet to receive any acknowledgement or action on any of the reports I have made on this?!

Indeed. It’s all very well to say that people post intimate photos all the time on the internet, but I’m not talking about the rest of the internet, I’m talking about Mumsnet.

At the very least, if @mnhq really think it’s appropriate to allow posters to post photos of genitals (their own or other people’s, who knows!) then they should at least move them out of AIBU and Chat into the General Health topic and apply a blur filter so if someone accidentally clicks on the thread, they’re not immediately faced with a stranger’s arsehole.

Hello,

This is standard practice when these threads are flagged and the user is genuine, so we'll continue doing this going forward. If you think there's something we missed, please let us know and we'll go back and take another look.

Shame to see this thread dwindle and HQ just hoping that it will go away.

Apply a few rules to your own website, come on @MNHQ!

Fairly typical though sadly.

You can do lots of things to prevent it happening. You can stop people posting photos of their private parts for a start.

I cannot think of another parenting or chat forum where this would be acceptable.

The person should have the sense to crop the photo, if she hasn’t got the sense then it should be removed. What if it’s someone else’s photo posted in spite?

Yeah, I come across the photo before the filter etc was applied. I do not understand why it wasn't cropped to show the problem area only. There was no need to have a full view of everything, and it should have been removed imo.

It's not a good idea for MN to allow photos of people's genitals, for so many reasons, including not knowing who the photo really belongs to.

Museum1066 · 30/11/2023 22:05

Would it be possible to put an auto censor on any photo, like an opaque filter ?

mynameiscalypso · 30/11/2023 21:59

Can you please look at including an update to the app in line with the website so you don't just open a thread and with no warning that there's a pic, see a full size pic of someone's vulva and vagina?? If you look on the threads on the website, there's a banner saying 'sensitive content' and you have to actively click. There is absolutely nothing of the sort on the app so you can open a thread by mistake and find yourself seeing something you really didn't want to see through no fault of your own.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/11/2023 19:25

I recently was asked to send a photo of my issue to the GP. Before I could even upload it, I was warned not to send a picture of my genitals or anus. If my GP surgery doesn't want to see that without prior arrangement, I don't see why the rest of Mumsnet needs to see it. Especially given that 99% of readers on Mumsnet are not even medically qualified anyway. So why the fuck would you do it? Makes me think TOO MANY SUCKERS on here.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 30/11/2023 11:29

LilyMumsnet · 29/11/2023 21:43

To add, if you click on a link and see something that makes you uncomfortable, we are sorry for that. But there is nothing we can do to prevent that from happening - when you open any thread, you are essentially agreeing to see that content.

As we said, happy to deal with any concerns if you report them to us but we don't have a way to stop you from seeing content before we see it ourselves. Mumsnet is a post-moderated site and we make this clear - posts are not pending, pre vetted or waiting for a moderator to see it. Once a user hits 'post' the post is live.

Honestly OP chill out.

Don't click on the thread. So simple yet so true.

MsRosley · 29/11/2023 22:07

You have to wonder how women this uptight ever manage to give birth.

LeRougeEtLeNoir · 29/11/2023 22:03

@AnxiousPangolin I don’t know which threads you normally read but I very very rarely came across photos like this.
Seriously.

As fir whether it’s ok or not, I’d not post most if those photos out of privacy FOR MYSELF (I tend to think MN isn’t as anonymous as you’d like to think).
But after that, everyone can chose? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Lougle · 29/11/2023 22:00

There is a real risk that people can also get false reassurance. 100 people with no medical training say 'I always get spots like that', 'looks just like my pimple in 2018, 'yep, that's a x', etc., etc., so the poster doesn't seek medical advice and slips through the net with a much worse outcome.

I've seen some amazing threads where posters have been told to get to hospital and it's saved their lives, but I'm sure there are many where treatment has been delayed by well meaning false reassurance.

Coddiwomples · 29/11/2023 21:53

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/11/2023 21:53

You are completely right OP. I can't get over the number of people wanting to post gross photos on a chat forum. I don't care how many warnings - have some fucking manners and use the site appropriately!

KEG05 · 29/11/2023 21:51

Crabble · 29/11/2023 20:50

Disagree. The poster who is scared about having vulval cancer (assuming it’s a genuine thread) was looking for support because she’s terrified. I don’t think that’s the kind of thing MN should be preventing. Just don’t look.

100% agree with this. That lady needs support and reassurance. It’s censored. Don’t look if you don’t want to it’s not compulsory 🤷‍♀️

sixteenfurryfeet · 29/11/2023 21:51

The only turd photos I've ever seen on MN have been in the Gardening topic when people are asking if anyone knows what sort of creature has defecated on their lawn.

I did report a thread with these types of images though a few weeks back (the one I referred to in my last post) and nothing has been done - not even a trigger warning

Coyoacan · 29/11/2023 21:49

OP, I can cope with seeing shit and I can cope with swearing but I find your swearing much more unpleasant than a photo of shit or a blood clot by a genuinely concerned poster

twirlywoop · 29/11/2023 21:47

wheretoyougonow · 29/11/2023 21:03

I am really concerned about the genital picture. What if it's actually an abuse photo? I won't go in to detail about why that could be but I really don't think it should be allowed.

That's a very good point. And no one has verified that is the poster's genitals.
