UPDATE FROM MNHQ - New OP view

Oh, it's a new layout and not my telly addicts being broken. It is absolutely awful on my android- makes the topic impossible to use as all I am doing is scrolling. Each thread is huge too. Please change it back!

It looks like the new Reddit style, which is based on easier visibility of picture posts and link previews, which is why it's set out like Facebook. Most of their popular/most used subreddits and the porn ones are mainly pictures and links. (Like PPs I have disabled this because I mainly browse text based subreddits, and it looks weird with that selection of content).

I don't get why you would want that on MN which is predominantly text based. Are you wanting to encourage people to post more images and links? Is that why you've picked those specific topics, as being most likely to attract people to put links or pictures in an OP?

It looks messy as most threads are text based. And it looks especially strange on a widescreen desktop because there's this huge grey space all at the sides and then a tiny feed in the middle with massive text that takes up all the space within that feed column!

It looks daft everywhere (ie, not just this new view) with the tiny, nonstretching column feed and massive grey space on most of the threads TBH but I can at least understand why this is in place (continuity with mobile) and it works well enough because you can still fit a decent amount of text on the screen to read.

I know that you need to increase your revenue/user engagement but I wish that brands wouldn't do this - rather than going "What do we do? What makes us special and unique and different and makes users choose us over other brands?" and then do more of that/make that better, it's like you've gone "Oh look loads of people use Facebook and Reddit, what can we do to be more like them?"

The thing is if MN becomes facebook-or-reddit-lite then I'd just stop using it because those sites do it better and probably will continue to be ten steps ahead forever. I come to MN because it is not those places and offers something different.

Plus they’ll have so many tabs open they probably won’t be able to work out which one was the original tab with the original unchanged list anyway.

Thank God I only really peruse Active to look through threads. You’re not going to have all that opening new tabs nonsense on Active are you @LilyMumsnet

No idea who you’ve been talking to about users liking to click back on an unchanged list of threads but they sound like numpties.

I agree with this, it's far more padding, less concentrated MN threads which is what we're all here for! I use Facebook far less because of this and MN would become far less appealing.

You've made some fab changes recently but this is bad, sorry - I can't deal with a cluttered phone screen. I'm on mobile browser version (Firefox) . It works ok but it's too much... the thread title is fine in my opinion, I don't need half sentences thrown around, it's distracting and messy.

It's awful on ipad safari. Far too much scrolling and big blank spaces.
Please revert.
What would be useful would be to be able to see who had started a thread, as we used to be able to, without having to open the thread.

The truth is we don't like change, I can still remember with some embarrassment some major grumbles from me when the mobile site was minorly tinkered with many years ago. Didn't take long to get used to it (I think @BIWI told me to get a grip and give my head a wobble )

App never changes you can't even edit or quote a quote on the app. It's ridiculous!

I would much prefer to be able to see publicly how many 'thanks' a post has.

Its terrible. And who wants to open a new tab with every click? I dont have infinite memory, I dont need tabs to keep opening up.

Also, it is clumsy, cluttered and no easy to read.

Much prefer just the titles. I can then click on them and see what theyre about! I dont need a preview on them before hand.

Me too. Never downloaded the app, I just use a Chrome tab on my phone.

So I’ve just switched back to compact view but it now still opens up a new tab when you click on a thread. I do not agree with this HQ. Why’d ya do it?

Ah, I take it all back - the opening up a new tab thing when you click on a thread. That’s a bit crap. Why would you want that clutter?

It's a nope from me. Takes up loads of space, adds nothing. I switched view immediately and will be finding the setting to make that the default.

Sorry @MNHQ it is shit - it feels like Facebook having to scroll through pages to just see 10 threads. On the upside, if you roll it out across the site I may be able to break my MN addiction and get off the site and get my time back (in the same way I have left FB).
