Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

@EasternStandard Yes, please do! Your support over the last week has not gone unnoticed by me.

BlurredEdges · 14/10/2023 16:07

What a lot of lovely people on this thread. I have to say, it's never occurred to me to go on Craicnet or Scotsnet - just seems totally obvious to me that it's not my place and I have nothing of value to add there. The only time I can imagine going there would be to ask specific advice. Ask, not tell!

It's funny how for certain people (not the ones on this thread), the opposite applies when it comes to the Black MNetters or potential Jewish MNetters board - no respect for it being a space that's not for them, no sense that they might not be welcome or that their opinion is not being asked for, because they don't have anything worth bringing to the discussion.

It makes me think of the certain type of men who can't stand to see women sharing our thoughts without coming to trample all over us with their manly opinions.

MimPimMim · 14/10/2023 16:05

Also fully support this. I am horrified by the antisemitism that I have seen on here - and elsewhere - over the last week. It’s shameful and upsetting. Sending love and support x

yoghurtknitter · 14/10/2023 16:04

Fully support this

etmoietmoietmoi · 14/10/2023 16:03

I would also add I'm a terrible Jew - not even 'lapsed' but have never actually practised and do not know nearly enough as I should about Judaism! So I think this space could be somewhere for me to learn too!

WaveyGodshawk · 14/10/2023 16:01

Not Jewish but 100% support this. Another one that's been horrified by the level of antisemitism that's come crawling out of the woodwork here.

Also (as someone who was here when Craicnet was being setup) it's really nice to have the space to chat amongst each other for members of a specific community!

So while the circumstances of requesting it now are horrible and upsetting, I hope it will grow to be a lovely space for Jewish mumsnetters too Flowers

Cismyfatarse · 14/10/2023 16:00

Absolute support for this.

StartingAgainAgain23 · 14/10/2023 16:00

Not Jewish, but supportive!

Snowplop · 14/10/2023 16:00

I'm not Jewish but I would like to add my support for this.

quantumbutterfly · 14/10/2023 15:28

Not Jewish but support this if it's needed, it's a shame that people feel unsafe in the wider spaces of mumsnet, in real life this is how ghettos start and communities separate.

I'm usually an advocate of integration over separation but I'm disappointed by the antagonism Jewish people have had to deal with in this country.

Mumsnet is a microcosm of society isn't it, the feminists are having a chat in one corner, black mumsnetters in another etc I'd like to think we can visit these chats in good faith but I do feel like I've wandered into Royston Vasey sometimes.

Stay safe.

I do actually get your sentiments, but would add that both the blatant and more veiled antisemitism on MN this week has had a pretty detrimental effect on mental health - I'm sure I'm not speaking just for myself here. I also see an awful lot of racism towards Black people on MN, and have always agreed it's essential they have their own space too.

My DH is non-Jewish, and while he's totally supportive and sees it too, sometimes I just want to turn round and vent with someone that gets it a bit more. So it's really nothing more than wanting to chat with as little trolling and baiting from certain individuals as possible. I'm sure everyone will continue to contribute on other threads outside the 'safe space'.

GlitchStitch · 14/10/2023 15:59

I'm not Jewish but I've been disgusted by some of the anti-semitism I've seen on MN the past few days. I reported several posts from the same poster the other day that were so blatant and disgusting, all of them were deleted by MNHQ. But then the next morning I saw the same username once again. I'm not sure what it takes to be banned on this site.

LorraineBainMcFly · 14/10/2023 15:59

Adding my voice to agree with op.

321user123 · 14/10/2023 15:58

I’m not Jewish, but I’d absolutely love this for you ladies and gents to benefit from :)

Irridescantshimmmer · 14/10/2023 15:58

I am not Jewish and fully support this.

25milesfromhome · 14/10/2023 15:49

Sorry, what? As opposed to the Jewish population in any other country? What an odd and patronising thing to say.

Sorry I had no intention of being patronising.
I have no opinion on the jewish population outside of the UK as I don't live there.

By harmless I mean inoffensive. I don't see anything for others to get worked up about.

I'll shut up now.

MorrisZapp · 14/10/2023 15:58

Fair play, gets my vote (non Jewish person)

As an aside, Scottish people don't need a safe space as such. It's more chatting about schools and which part of East Lothian to move to - all are welcome! And no there aren't any cheap hotels in Edinburgh, sorry.

Tessisme · 14/10/2023 15:56

(but I do take umbrage with @Tessisme suggesting that traybakes are not a sensitive and significant point of discussion - life or death for this Nordie Prod )

Fair point😄

I recognise your username as being continually supportive, decent and kind over the past week. I can't speak for anyone else but I would welcome your posting on a hypothetical board

It's the people who speak over us, claim to speak for us, tell us they know better than us about our own lives and histories and feelings who should bugger off!

I agree with you and have tried to point this out, I can’t bear the over speaking and dismissing

I’m so sad about this. So much support Flowers

Notmytotoro · 14/10/2023 15:53

I'm not Jewish but I support it.

HorribleHisTories15 · 14/10/2023 15:53

I'm not Jewish, but black, and I know how helpful and useful it can be to discuss topics without having to justify/ explain/ etc to those in the broader community (the diaspora means that agreement on any one topic is, naturally, largely futile).

Users of the potential and future Jewish sub thread, beware, there will always be the outsider to nullify your truths. Or an 'ultra' to tell you that you are not a purist.

AfingeroffudgeisNOTenough · 14/10/2023 15:52

Just want to add that the AMA with the Orthodox Jew remains one of my favourite threads ever - not only was it so informative but it was really beautiful to see how respectful everyone was no matter what tradition they came from. (With the exception of that one poster!) If only all threads with people from different backgrounds could be as respectful and honouring to those we disagree with. It’s not the reality though and that’s why I think separate areas on mumsnet are a necessity. I hope it’s set up swiftly and I hope it is respected and can be a genuine safe space for Jewish members to speak freely and openly.

(but I do take umbrage with @Tessisme suggesting that traybakes are not a sensitive and significant point of discussion - life or death for this Nordie Prod Wink)

BlurredEdges · 14/10/2023 15:52

EasternStandard · 14/10/2023 15:47

I’m not Jewish but I’m really upset and angry at the antisemitism on this site over the last few days

If Jewish posters would like this then that is their decision

I would prefer to chat amongst you than others who have driven you to this though

BIWI · 14/10/2023 15:52

How sad that it has come to this Sad

Definitely support this suggestion, although what a shame it's had to be requested.

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 14/10/2023 15:51

Not Jewish, but support this for you all who are xx

LakeTiticaca · 14/10/2023 15:50

Not Jewish but have Jewish grandchildren. I am absolutely behind this x
