UPDATE FROM MNHQ - new edit feature

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 23/08/2023 09:28

We’re pleased to announce that we’re introducing an edit feature.

Historically, we’ve been hesitant to introduce edits because of concerns that historical revisions could cause confusion.

We’re mitigating this by implementing both a time limit (you’ll have a short period of time to edit your post) and ensuring the edit history will be visible to all. The edit feature is designed for minor corrections, such as fixing spelling mistakes and grammar errors that don't change the context of your post. It should not be used to change the overall meaning or intention of your original message. We’re adding a new report option so you can let us know if you think anyone is abusing the feature.

To edit your post:
Select the ‘...’ menu on the post you want to edit
Select ‘Edit’
Fix any mistakes
Select ‘Update’ to save your changes

To see the edit history of a post:
Select the ‘Edited’ label on the post

As some of you may know, we’re currently working on rebuilding our mobile Talk app so app users can access features that are available on our website. Whilst this work is underway, users won’t be able to edit their posts in the app, but they will be able to see when a post has been edited and view the edit history. iOS users will need to make sure they’ve updated to the latest version. The update for Android will be coming imminently and we’ll let you know when it’s available.

We know it’s frustrating for app users at the moment - the rebuild will be a huge improvement but it’s a huge job and is taking time. We really appreciate your patience.

We hope you find the edit button useful - we’ve added edit guidance to our Talk Guidelines, but if you’ve any questions or problems, please add to the thread.

Thanks, MNHQ

Does it work in the iPad app I wonder?

…no, but I can edit a post made in the app if I can find it in the browser in time.

Edited

... doesn't look like it. Humph.

Weird feature to focus on IMO.

Who cares about editing your post? So you make a mistake, so what?

Thousands of people have been asking for an edit feature for years. HTH

Delighted

still delighted

RustyBear · 23/08/2023 14:27

Bit of a weird one for TechMN - is the close button on the pop up showing edits programmed differently, because it doesn’t recognise my Apple Pencil. All the other buttons, links etc are fine, but if I look at an edit I can’t close it with the pencil, only with my finger.

OscarMikeGolf · 23/08/2023 14:20

The app never gets updated, it’s a load of old rubbish.

ElthamLemur · 23/08/2023 14:12

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/08/2023 12:58

I know @ElthamLemur I did go and read

But the two things that are handy - editing and messaging and both arent compatible with the app

But they are saying that they are changing the app!

Whinge · 23/08/2023 10:34

They had a really annoying pop up for the new feeds thing, a feature that no one asked for but only a thread for a much wanted feature like an edit button. Confused

I think it would be a good idea to add a one time pop up when people come on the site today to let them know about the edit button feature. Especially as it's easy to miss if you don't click the 3 dots.

Quite!

RustyBear · 23/08/2023 13:41

It’s only available on new posts from today- I couldn’t edit an old post.

Edit: Just realised that’s because of the time limit…
