Rather than deleting troll threads .. could we move them to a 'Troll section'

Twiglett · 26/02/2008 18:06

and change the colour of them (say to red) so that people can actually see quite how perniciously nasty or weird some of the trolls can be and why other people get so up in arms about the potential of them

OP posts:

Sorry for interupting...

Can someone email me the thread too, please?

yes, but that assumes that we are all equally emotionally intelligent, pruners, and we are not. so what i'm concerned about is the two extremes, both the people who are taken advantage of (for me, financially, for others, emotionally) and those who take such glee in troll hunting that they run the risk of doing real harm to a vulnerable person.

Kindersurpise · 26/02/2008 19:58

With a troll it is the trickle of information, not a huge OP with lots of info, just lots of little posts. They tend not to reply to anyone, just dish out small bite sized remarks designed to shock.

The difference is that a troll might post about something as horrible and traumatic as cancer, but they describe things differently. Reading MrsGG's posts, they were all quite dramatic, full of horror and OMG kind of thing.

It is really sad to think that someone like MB would hesitate to post about their problems in fear of being asked if they were a troll.

These kind of threads are better deleted, some of them are perhaps a strange kind of cry for help. The ones that are hoping to scam some money should be deleted too.

The funny ones can stay (like the kitchen fetish DH)

warthog · 26/02/2008 19:35

i think this is a good idea.

hilllary also said she was sexually abused.

AitchTwoOh · 26/02/2008 19:34

sorry to hear about tonight's grimness, MB.

AitchTwoOh · 26/02/2008 19:32

it is interesting, isn't it? to be honest, what i read of the domestic violence stuff rang fairly true to me so who knows what she's up to or where her life is?

the waters breaking was a bit dramatic but not completely unfeasible and therefore still deserving of benefit of doubt, but the odd medical jargon post and strange lack of concern for such a tiny baby obviously rang alarm bells. even the fact that she posted at all was, i felt, a mis-fire, because it seemed to be about answering doubters whereas a real life scenario like that, well, we'd not have heard for a week if at all.

having said that, as i said to you before, i am doubly wary of publicly doubting people on here because my friend's abusive husband has somehow implanted in her brain that when people disbelieve her it's because only he will ever truly understand her.

as fucked-up as that is, he uses her trying to escape from her abuse and not being credible (because the story is fucking incredible, believe me) and her being muddled because of being constantly in fight or flight mode as another way of controlling her. it's magnificent in its evil, truly.

i've seen letters where he says things like 'no one will ever understand what we have together, no one can penetrate how we work together. they think because i hit you i don't love you, but you know it's the opposite etc etc etc' and there it is, a confession, but one that keeps them together. bizarre.

Blandmum · 26/02/2008 19:32

I know that it is crazy, I really do. But it is a very funny feeling. And the fact that he is still doing so well sometimes adds to the worry. He's not well tonight thogh, bloody grim, in fact.

Reasons why people do this:

If every forum, say they are on 20, gave up 100 quid per forum, that's 2000 pounds.

Of if every person sent stuff like baby clothing, equipment etc, thats a good few car boot sales.

If you think about it, the forums out there are huge. You could go on just about every illness forum, 6 parenting forums that I know of, goodness knows how many yahoo groups, the list is endless.

If all you are paying is 29.99 per month for your broadband, are unemployed and have the time to do it, you could buy a house with the proceeds.

Actually I have had that feeling to some extent in the past when desperately upset about some difficulty

that people will feel I have exaggerated it for effect

it is hard to feel you have the right to get sympathy and support sometimes isn't it?

Blandmum · 26/02/2008 19:26

It's daft isn't it?

Dh confesses to the same feeling sometimes. His work have been so good, and he is still with us. He sometimes feels as if other people might think he exagerated the initial diagnosis and prognosis!

Quite mad, but it is how it takes you sometimes.

And people do make this sort of shit up, though why escapes me!

Judgypants · 26/02/2008 19:22

I think that people who are after something such as money or gifts, work out that they need to post about a month in advance and frequently enough for people to think they actually exist.

But surely if a real life situation does happen, then the archives are there with all of the advice possible. It costs nothing to post advice or help on a board.

I agree with Twiglett that trolling posts should stay in a trolling area. They are sometimes quite amusing.

MB you are so obviously not a troll. Please don't even think that.

FrannyandZooey · 26/02/2008 19:22

MB for me it is not the drama / tragedy in a situation that sets off alarm bells ringing and I am sure this is the same for others

I don't know WHAT it is - just a feeling that something does not ring true

no-one could ever get that from your posts in a million years. I am sorry you have worried about this

Aitch it is a compelling subject, isn't it? I feel a bit guilty to have been so fascinated by this unfolding

Blandmum · 26/02/2008 19:22

chuck on the arm taken in good spirit.

AitchTwoOh · 26/02/2008 19:21

oh dear mb, really?
