does ti matter if thre are trolls? cos i dont think so

Trolling worries me a bit because of the emotional mauling it can give some people, who empathise with the troll only to find that it was all doe as a sick joke.

On a personal bases I sometimes worry that people might think I'm a troll. Which I know is daft since I know my situation is real, and you are all my virtual mates. But the situation that we are in is so like the one conjured up by trolls that I worry that sometimes people might think that I'm one.

Daft I know, but there you go.

I agree, many of the toll threads are inspired and funny. Some, hilarious.

It stops though at the serious issues that people really do go through every day in RL, though doesn't it?

I didn't post on the DV thread, I actually didn't see it until it was all over and done with. I also, didn't think she was a troll. I felt it looked all genuine. That there was nothing to make you think otherwise. Some people felt things didn't add up, but again, there was nothing really to substantiate it. Gut feeling maybe? Still, I just can't help feeling that it all got a bit nasty, too soon, way before anything could be proved.

LIke i said on another thread about it, I'd rather believe someone in the first instance, than not, and cause genuine people more harm...

Surely we should all be giving the benefit of the doubt than going out of our way to prove someone is delusional? Of course, that is ALL we should be giving, keep your cheque books and pens safely in your bags...

Sorry, I know this is a light hearted thread, and its made me laugh reading through it, as has reading about granny's pimp... but, it also made me really think about the whole thing. Just made me feel quite disillusioned and sad really. I mean, part of the great ethos about MN is the fantastic support and advice that every one gives freely to others on here. IF such threads ( The DV etc) are going to ruin that atmosphere, and make every one so incredibly cynical, then it destroys the whole philosophy of MN doesn't it?

Some of those who have been around a while, however, can sometimes be a bit cynical about certain posters who come on the scene because they fit the pattern of past trolls who managed to scam people, hurt feelings, etc.

Sorry, but it's happened and many have fallen for them and whilst you try to remain open-minded, some threads I won't touch with a ten-foot barge pole because for same reason they don't sit right but if I expressed any misgivings I'd be beyond flamed and it's just not worth the bother.

Last night, I discovered I was not alone in this sentiment.

It will continue to happen. Always has and always will.

Well, it does when you get someone like Judge Flounce, though, who was giving out legal advice that was obviously incorrect and asking people to come to him with legal problems.

That went beyond harmless.

Also people like 'cowmad' who were for all intents and purposes cyberstalking certain posters.

Not harmless.

We really need some guidelines for trolls to follow to make their stories last a bit longer.

1)Don't use google images, or if you do use page 23214 not page one or you'll be found out quick sharp.
2)Do post on a few topics before you start trolling otherwise you'll only get about four answerts before someone says 'I see this is your first post'
3)Don't post about something you have no clue about, cos someone else will and they'll out you.
4)Don't C&P, at least reword the stuff you google.

re the trolls, seems to me it's much more important that we remain open-minded and remember how much people suffer in silence than it is to smoke out trolls. that's what MN is about. the money thing, however, we should be cautious about.
