Please could you include Scotland in your education section. We don't have Reception, SATS, league tables or bands.

I did ask you nicely at the beginning of 2003 and emailed you lots of info .

My ds was 6 months at the time.

Now he's actually starting Primary 1 in August and I would have liked to have had a MN perspective on what to expect.

There are quite a lot of Scottish mumsnetters and we would appreciate the different education system being acknowledged.

The information is out there.

There are a few Scottish teachers on here too who could help you out of you hit a brick wall.

Your information on English schooling is great, something comparable for north of the border would be fab.

Both DDs are winter birthdays. DD1 was born in England where Janaury seemed like a nice middle-of-the-year sort of birthday. Little did I know.............

MF, yes, that's how it would be. Boys in particular seem to benefit from a delayed start but it varies from area to area. When we lived in Perth almost no one delayed school but in Aberdeenshire they are quite happy to do so. Ime, the nursery a child attends will have a pretty good idea as to how things will pan out. And I think but am not 100% cert ain, you could apply for your ds to go to school in '09 but if by August you didn't feel he was ready you can delay it at that point.

Re the weather, I'm still in Nigeria but will be home on Tuesday to sample the Scots climate, yippeeeeee!!!

Sue, no you can't have separate sections for those categories unless they have their own parliament funded by all the UK!

Can there be a separate section for schools in Leics and other areas that have the middle school system?

And another for those counties which still have 11+?

And another for independent schools?

Yes, that's it! Except the schools start in Aug in Scotland - no idea why, although historically, we have the 'tattie-picking' holidays in October. And the weather tends to be better earlier in the summer - August can feel quite autumnal in Scotland.

Motherfunk, the children that will be starting this year, August 2007, will have been born at anytime between 1st March 2002 to 28th Feb 2003. So no child is less than 4yrs 6mths when they begin school.

Most children will not be older than 5yr 6mths but a parent may choose to keep back a child who is not yet 5yo by August and send them to school the following year. Eg, my friends dd's was born on 28th Feb 1994. She would have been 4yr 6mth if she started school in 1998 but she wasn't ready for school so she delayed for a year and began school Aug in 1999 at 5yr 6mths.

From what I read on MN, I also think in England, if a child misses yearR, they then go into Y1. In Scotland the child doesn't miss that firest year, they still go into P1, not P2.

That's all clear as mud, isn't it??

No Primary 1 is 4.5 - 5.5 which is a big difference when you get to know a four year old. Hence all the panicked posts from mums in England about "summer born" children.

A Scottish education topic would be most excellent! I never tire of pointing out to the British international schools here that they use the English curriculum, there is no British curriculum. Petty, I know, but it gives me pleasure.

I know some of the schools are still called grammar schools (hutchie, Paisley etc).

The only thing the possibly comes close would be Jordanhill School which is grant aided, but not selective (except by mega-mortgage ) but that's the only one in the country I can think of.

And just to confuse things: we have a grammar school here (in Scotland) but it's not selective!

Hi Bobsmum,
You are right of course - has it really been that long ? Now I know you might find this hard to believe but our next big project after some talk refinements is the big issues guide and I absolutely guarantee you than when that re-vamp occurs - autumn hopefully we will absolutely make sure that the Scottish school system is included.
