A Plea to get rid of the AIBU section

as other people have said, though Shiny, the AIBU threads can take up a lot of 'active conversations. So they are kind of hard to miss.

A filter, like the one we have for buying and selling, might be a good compromise

Lots of sites have "Need to Rant" type forums allowing people to get things off their chests. How about don't read them if you don't want to be irritated by people's whinging?

I am a total hypocrite as I have responded to AIBU threads in the past, but yes - get rid of them!!!!

I am going to claim smug git of the day award: not only do I dislike the AIBU threads but I have searched my messages and found out that I have never once posted on one!

I said this earlier, but a check box to exclude it would be the best way...like chat and buying/selling, and this could extend to AN/PN as well, but where do you draw the line.

As a side issue in response to foxinsox....not all ante-natal thread posters stick to their own corner (I don't and lots of my fellow ante-natal thread posters don't either...hi foxy, bumper ) and as far as I'm aware the rows only start when people from other areas of the boards butt in with their unwanted criticisms of thread titles.....(she says speaking from personal experience).....

i broadly agree with you tigermoth but disagree on the subject of AIBU, i think it's a shite topic and encourages pointless ranting. the more interesting/amusing stuff will survive elsewhere.

aitchtwooh, in answer to your question, I think any change in mumsnet (and yes, I did start a thread on this recently in relation to baby and toddler issues) is mainly down to what people post, the good manners, sense of humour of the individual posters. It is not governed by the names of the topics they choose.

'In the news' threads can also see lots of nasty comments at times. I don't think that is because the title is worded incorrectly.

If you remove the AIBU and A/P natal threads, everyone would have to go and find something else to complain about

i thought that existed already, does it not? i can't really be arsed doing it, i just want to click active convos and see who's talking where. but without clubs and buying and selling which take up a lot of room on the page.

those ante natal threads are really the only threads where people post on them without posting on the rest of the board. And they periodically cause rows. They can be there (she says graciously ) but we could have a tick box to exclude them.

i didn't think you were, LL... i was just responding to you. but the thing about ignoring them would mean that you'd miss out on the better ones. but the better ones would be just as well in chat or relationships or something less black and white than aibu, to which the answer is only nyanbu or yabu, really.

Despite that, I think it is interesting to see all the topics that are being discussed. I've learned a lot on her through sheer accident of reading titles. I'd have never have heard of things like BLW without seeing them in active convos. Nor would I have known that crocs were such a heinous fashion crime

hmm. I know what you mean, tigermoth. but also the existence of a topic which cries out for people to post about their petty prejudices is going to encourage people to post about them isn't it?

I think we should balance AIBU with a topic that encourages more positive posts. LIke MB's amusing whimsy topic, or a philosophy topic (yes, I know we have religion/spiritual stuff but that topic's a bit scarey)

oh for goodness sake, no-one is suggesting that people shouldn't be allowed to post asking for an MN jury or whatever... it's just that some people, myself included (and i think you too tigermoth if memory serves) have noted recently that this place has been more attritional lately and some (again, me included) think that this might be in part down to the existence of the AIBU topic. because things do seem to have got narkier since they were introduced, that's all.
