[shortest thread in MN history]

OP posts:
mrsjohnsimnelcake · 09/04/2007 19:06

ie Marsy, you are talking bolloux

mrsjohnsimnelcake · 09/04/2007 19:05

Totally agree with marsy, but disagree taht one can't have a polite and sensible deiscussion here, there are a couple of WOHM/SAHM ones knocking around just now that are very civilised so far.... and have been going a while.

But it often does get aq bit hairy and nasty sadly, mainly becuase we aren't physically sitting together i reckon. If you were in a pub/over a dinner table, you would be seeing people's body language and seeing that some people are ebing humerous etc.

and there is a to and fro with a converstation that is lost on here

piglit · 09/04/2007 19:04

I've just come onto MN for the first time in a few days and I think it's very very sad that some people have wasted a lovely long weekend having virtual fights and bitchfests with people they don't even know.

What do these people tell their dps/dhs/dc etc they are doing? "Sorry, I know it's a glorious day but I can't come to the beach -I'm having an on-line fight with someone in a chat room."

What a waste.

MarsLady · 09/04/2007 18:59

I like discussion. Sadly some people see discussion and

a) get flouncy because they can't distinguish discussion from confrontation and argument (in the worst sense of the word)

b) get stuck right in there being deliberately confrontational and personal to cause a row.

I'm not hugely convinced that reasoned argument can be safely held here (for above reasons) which is a shame as I'm sure that I'm not the only intelligent one here [preen] and also... it's difficult to see when people are saying something ironically (and there are people who wouldn't get irony if it bit them) or are deadly earnest.

That said.... the same works in RL conversation anyway.

As to you hinker......... starting yet another controversial thread..... get a life!

bosscat · 09/04/2007 18:55

I think that people are a lot more aggressive on here than they would ever dare to be in real life. I happen to have met one MN'etter for instance who caused HAVOC on here for weeks (not the Judge)and I would never have imagined her as a 17 year old very shy person who suffered from depression. There are people who are genuinely opinionated which is great fun to read and there are others who seem to be just spoiling for a fight. I worry about some of the frailer users of MN who take things very much to heart. Some people on here are obviously very lonely and if this was your only outlet, the pointed attacks would really hurt and we've all seen that happen. I don't get involved in the rucks anymore unless I see someone getting really picked on and I think its out of order.

Heathcliffscathy · 09/04/2007 18:52

imho i think there is a beeeeg difference between controversial and baiting.

and a huge difference between baiting people that for eg. agree with the invasion of Iraq (a political perspective) and baiting people over how they have chosen to for eg feed their babies.

Very different.

stoppinattwo · 09/04/2007 18:48

I love em.........when ive had a few wines..........as long as the other poster doesnt know where i live [shoitbag emotion]

BizzyDint · 09/04/2007 17:16

i like them.

i don't like when people can't string a proper sentence together so just say 'fuck off' or whatever though.

and i don't like it when someone charges in after 200+ posts without reading any of what's been said then just starts it all off again, going round and round and round...yawn.

Debbsyandson · 09/04/2007 17:08

well said ponka

monkeytrousers · 09/04/2007 17:02

only if you actually learn something - not "my opinion is just as valid as yours - on any subject"

People should learn to separate fact from opinion; if they want to have a serious debate only though.

Carmenere · 09/04/2007 16:58

Did I say I didn't like controversial threads?

Carmenere · 09/04/2007 16:58

UCM Please, please, please do a definitive clique list. Please?

SlightlyMadSlug · 09/04/2007 16:56

I don't like em.

They move far too quick and I can't keep up .

And whilst you are all bickering at each other over god knows what you are not writing funny posts on the threads I am keeping up with .

Then they get deleted and I havn't got a clue what everyone is raving on about for the next 3 days .

And of course by definition at least 2 people are upset about them .

I don't mind a good harmless troll tho. Pollychrome and blue cheese were inspired

Ponka · 09/04/2007 16:53

I agree. A good debate/discussion is always really interesting and you can really learn a lot from them. I'm not sure why they so often turn more sinister here.

I just think that being a Mum is a bloody hard job which comes with very little free time so I'm definately not going to use that free time to:

a) Get picked upon
b) Pick on someone else
c) Watch others being picked on

just over what they cook, the way the feed their kids etc. etc.

Life's too short.

NadineBaggott · 09/04/2007 16:43

if they're like the soap dispenser thread - I love em!

DeviousDaffodil · 09/04/2007 16:39

I am all for a good debate.
it is healthy to have differing opinions.
I just wish peopel didn't have to resort to insulte and jibes, it is so depressing.

I think some of the prolific posters on here seem like a clique but have probably never met/talked to each other, they just have the same views.

LittleEasterLapin · 09/04/2007 16:05

Well, that debbsyandson for a start...

UCM · 09/04/2007 16:03

of

UCM · 09/04/2007 16:02

What I REALLY want to know is when someone is going to do a list who they think are cliquey. I might but am not pissed yet, so watch this space

UCM · 09/04/2007 16:01

I fecking love em' saves me spending 40 quid down the pub, waiting for a fight

No, joking aside. I really do enjoy them. I sometimes agree with both which confuses me. I have learnt alot from other people on here, which has stopped me from being so narrow minded, a good thing I think.

ScoobyDooooo · 09/04/2007 16:01

I don't mind any thread a good debate is good to read/join in but i don't like the name calling it is very childish & well school ground behaviourer.

Go on Hunker tell us you love em

Debbsyandson · 09/04/2007 15:59

sworry ds 4 mths on knee seem to be the same people i meant

Debbsyandson · 09/04/2007 15:58

me as some comments by certain people (dont know if anyone has noticed but it always to be the same people)are very derrogatory, personal and rude not fair really,we can debate but others tend to turn those threads bitchy so i steer well clear.
