We’d like your help testing a new release of the Mumsnet Talk App 3.0 (beta).

This app is for iPhones and iPads on iOS8 only at the moment.

We'd love it if you can give the app a good workout - using it as you normally do - to read and post in Talk. please do bear in mind that the app is still in beta version, so some things may not work perfectly. We have made a few changes since our last test release.

Sign up for Talk app testing here

You can use any email address to sign up.
You need to be logged in to sign up. (If you can't see the sign up page, make sure you are logged in.)
It is LIVE. Any posts you make will be seen on the Mumsnet site for all to see. We'll send you an invitation to download the app (it will arrive via the TestFlight service).

Talk app users

This app will replace the current Talk app (2.1) on your phone if you have it.

Recent beta Talk app testers (Testflight 1.0)

If you have been involved in recent app testing, you will end up with two app icons (1.0 & 3.0) on your device. You can uninstall the previous beta app (it will stop working this week).
If you previously signed up for this - but didn't accept & download the app - you will need to sign up again.

Please do give us your feedback on this thread.
Many thanks Flowers

And on the iPad the keyboard is different again!

RustyBear · 09/09/2015 21:33

Mermaid - the underscore is on the second screen of the keyboard when you're in the username/email box (see screenshot. Oddly, when you're in the password box, you get a different keyboard layout with the underscore on the 3rd keyboard screen

I agree with a pp who would like a night mode for all those times you're mnetting in the dark.

I'm in the dark right now beside a small child, and while my dark purple colour scheme is ok for lists of threads, I'm being utterly blinded by the white text boxes of posts.

A low-contrast night mode colour scheme - maybe with light text on a dark background throughout - would be lovely.

IAmAPaleontologist · 09/09/2015 20:59

I've just downloaded it. Shiny!

How do you flip threads?

And why are some poster names in pretty colours and some in grey?

Otherwise seems better than the old app so far.

Bumply · 09/09/2015 20:48

The text size is dynamic based on your iPhone settings. Display & Brightness -> Text size
Don't know if that's the same on an iPad.

LittleBearPad · 09/09/2015 20:19

It's looking really good. A search function would be great.

Flingingmelon · 09/09/2015 18:25

The drinks for the developers. The new app hasn't improved my ability to write posts :s

Flingingmelon · 09/09/2015 18:24

I miss discussions of the day, but I love that I can post photos now

Also love that you see the strikeout as you are typing so no more strikeout fails probably

CleverPlansAndSecretTricks · 09/09/2015 17:29

Also the share function needs to include email. I sometimes email DH a thread if I think he will like it.

CleverPlansAndSecretTricks · 09/09/2015 17:18

Wow. I love it!! So easy to do what I want to do (active threads, threads I'm on, threads I'm watching, look though the topics) and I love being able to chose the colour. Love the clean look and being able to edit my posts in the box. Very easy to start a new thread too.

I can't work out to do a search. Maybe I'm missing something?

Most of my mumsnetting is done in the dark while feeding baby back to sleep. I would LOVE it if there could be an extra dim "night mode" with less blue light.

LovelyFriend · 09/09/2015 16:53

ourvye you tap the large T (for text?) that lines up next to Smile B U etc

I got confused the first couple of times too but it's great having all those options at just a tap. just a matter of getting used to some new ways.

ouryve · 09/09/2015 16:36

It took me a while to work out how to bookmark!

I tried posting with a smiley in the middle of a post, last night. Getting back to the keyboard was a nightmare. I can't even work out exactly how I did it, in the end.

pixieg1rl · 09/09/2015 14:25

Agree zombie, no PMs is irritating. I did feed that back in the last user survey that came round. I would hope they add it to the spec of future releases.

zombiemeow · 09/09/2015 13:56

But where do you find pm's?

zombiemeow · 09/09/2015 13:56

Do we need to add feedback here?

I think the new app is great Smile

I love that you can now see/add photos.

SlightlyJaded · 09/09/2015 12:16

As you were.

I've just seen that the name of OP is a different colour. Not quite enough contrast/stand out for my liking.

I sometimes ignore all replies and just read OP updates. misses entire point of Mumnsnet Talk

SlightlyJaded · 09/09/2015 12:14

On it and it is a thing of beauty.

I can't figure out how to highlight OPs posts though. Am I being dim?

pixieg1rl · 09/09/2015 11:58

I'm using on an iPhone, if I wanted to put this on my iPad as well can I use the same info or should I re-apply?

Iwasbornin1993 · 09/09/2015 11:31

I'm in! I like it so far - am liking the photos best since I always had to swap to the mobile site to see any on the last app.

Oh believe me - nothing is too obvious to point out when it comes to me and my ipad. Grin

I'll go and check. Smile

HistoryRepeatingItself · 09/09/2015 10:57

simurgh - forgive me if I'm stating the obvious but are you trying to refresh when you are midway through a thread? You have to be either at the bottom on the top of the page to be able to refresh otherwise when you drag down it won't work. Also, you need to be dragging on the white background where everyone is posting rather than on the top coloured bar if you see what I mean.

Simurgh · 09/09/2015 10:53

There's mention of a new android app in due course, CuttedUpPear, although I realize that that doesn't help you right now. This thread may be of interest to you.

miniHovis · 09/09/2015 10:40

The only thing I don't like is the speech bubble things with the posters name, it kind of feels like something is missing to differentiate between posters

Simurgh · 09/09/2015 10:39

That's a fair point about the text sizing, mermaidbutmytailfelloff. I hadn't noticed because the letters are just about big enough for me anyway but I can see that it might cause some people difficulty. I'm guessing there's some technical reason for it?
