Please could MNHQ delete all PM inboxes of those on The List?

My home address is in at least one of those inboxes, which obviously is now far from secure.

Boat

If you think there is still phishing going on then all PMs should be deleted and you should log off.

If you don't, those on the list will have all had pwd changes so are at no more risk than anyone else - either they've been read already or they haven't - more likely the latter.

scatterthenuns · 21/08/2015 12:47

I'm on the list and don't want my PMs deleted either.

boatsgoby · 21/08/2015 12:44

OK, I could do without the abuse. I'm leaving this thread now. People can think about deleting PMs and how to do it if they want to. I'm surprised some of you think it Ok for individual posters to bother MNHQ with individual requests, but whatever. I do think people on the list have a responsibility towards others, but clearly some disagree about thinking about others.

Also I'd be surprised if the hacker had released details of all the affected accounts. I'd have kept some info back, the list seems to only show user names and passwords when its possible to log on with email address and password. I don't believe NOBOBY in the time they where gathering info logged on with an email address. I'd be more concerned about those who weren't on the list who are blithely going about their mnetting thinking they are safe.

CoteDAzur · 21/08/2015 12:40

How ridiculous. Has it occurred to you that some people might want to keep their PMs?

Delete your own PMs if that's what you want and ask MNHQ to delete the same in your correspondents' inboxes/outboxes.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2015 12:38

it seemed the safest option for me and for people I have PM'd.

What is there to be safe about?

99% of PMs do not include any sensitive information whatsoever.

GreyAndGoldInTheMeadow · 21/08/2015 12:35

But I don't have anything of any use to anyone in my pm's,. Hell I'd quite happily post the lot on a thread and they'd be of no interest even to anyone on here let alone a hacker, so why should I be forced by mnhq to delete them all.

boatsgoby · 21/08/2015 12:20

Well, MNHQ would give you notice, so you have time now, surely, to go through, copy what you want, and delete the rest? That's what I did, hence the length of time involved. Yes, it was some loss, and I would've preferred not to do it, but it seemed the safest option for me and for people I have PM'd.

OP posts:
GreyAndGoldInTheMeadow · 21/08/2015 12:18

They can't do that if mn hq just barge in and do it for them though. I really would think of the people who were on the list that have sensitive info in their pm is fairly low. Of those people who do, most will have already taken steps to ensure their account is secure. The chances of someone logging into one of the accounts that don't fall into any of the previous groups and searching their pm's for random info really must be tiny.

Thurlow · 21/08/2015 12:16

I don't want my PMs deleted. I was on the list, though with an email address. I'd be really, really pissed off if all my PMs just disappeared.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2015 12:16

One of the reasons it took so long for me to delete my own PMs is that I was saving stuff to Word as I went. Surely people on the list can do that?

Not if MNHQ delete them all as you suggest.

SoupDragon · 21/08/2015 12:15

I have a nice Select All button too. I think it might only do that page though.

Maybe use the desktop site rather than app or mobile site.

boatsgoby · 21/08/2015 12:10

I agree with PolterGoose; I know for a fact that some people I have PM'd are in such crisis that a problem with MN is going to be far, far down their list of priorities.

OP posts:
boatsgoby · 21/08/2015 12:08

It would be v time-consuming for MNHQ to delete individual PMs pointed out by individual users.

One of the reasons it took so long for me to delete my own PMs is that I was saving stuff to Word as I went. Surely people on the list can do that?

SurelyYoureJokingMrFeynman · 21/08/2015 12:05

Just to let any who'd PM'd me know, none of my names were on the list, and I anyway generally delete any PMs containing private details for precisely this reason (started after Heartbleed).

There were a couple of family history type emails I hadn't got round to deleting, but am now on it.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 21/08/2015 12:00

Can't senders just go through their sent boxes and check what's been sent?

Then a proper risk assessment can be done rather than just blankety deleting all PMs

Indeed, boatsgoby and some of the people on the Ashley Madison list (eg LGBT members living in countries with 'unsympathetic' regimes) are facing potentially much much worse than members here.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 21/08/2015 11:39

What?

FGS - I am on the list and do not want my PMs deleted.

I'm quite judicious about what I write to people and they seem to be too re: what they write back

If people want to delete their PMs they should crack on and do it themselves.

Plus, what if Jeremy has printed out or otherwise saved all of these PMs that are causing such concern as they presumably contain bank details etc? Confused

This is actually all becoming quite ridiculous now.

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 11:37

Thank you GreyAndGold. I sincerely hope that that is the case.

GreyAndGoldInTheMeadow · 21/08/2015 11:36

Simurgh, Everyone, not just those on the list, has had their passwords forcably reset already, even if they have not yet created a new one the published passwords are already invalid.

boatsgoby · 21/08/2015 11:33

Some people are going to be too busy with RL crises to prioritise this, I reckon, big though it is.

OP posts:
Simurgh · 21/08/2015 11:29

I agree with akkakk in that for most posters on the list it may be a question of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted because they would surely have taken action to secure their various accounts after finding out about the hack.

I would hope though that MNHQ will take note of any posters on the list who do not, after a certain point to be decided, change their MN passwords - and flag those accounts in such a way that only HQ can re-activate them on request. That should be easy enough to find out and do.

TooScaredToPostPostHack · 21/08/2015 11:29

It should be personal choice, not something that should be done en mass.
I've just done mine, only took a few minutes, select all, delete, new page pops up and repeat through the pages. How does it take 3 hours?

Those affected though should have the option of having all their posting history deleted, in case username changes were looked up and all history can be linked

magimedi · 21/08/2015 11:25

I was on the list & have deleted all my inbox & sent PMs. Just tick the top one & select all & the whole page vanishes.
