Can we donate?

I'm thinking that it will cost a bit to get the security on here sorted properly following all this bollocks, and I for one would be quite willing to pay a sub or just a one off donation in order to keep MN going - I know you don't need us to but if those of us who could, chipped in, it might make a difference?

Sorry if this is inappropriate. Thanks to all of you at HQ for the work you are doing. I can't imagine life without MN and though I realise not everyone is in a position to do this it would be worth every penny to me.

Just putting it out there.

I happily would. I don't think it's such a stupid suggestion even though I will probably be rounded upon Grin Mumsnet has been so invaluable to me so often and has helped me make life-changing decisions. I honestly think my life would be poorer and quite different without it.

I was on the parentscentre forum years ago before MN and it was basically brought down by trolls they couldn't get on top of. I'd happily pay a small subscription to help keep out the bored teens on holiday and the F4J wankers. It might not prevent everyone but would massively reduce the casual trolling.

I understand the security concerns but surely it could be done through another secure site such as paypal?

In a way, although I've spent most of today doing internet housekeeping, this whole thing has done me a favour. I was far more lax than I should have been over passwords, living in some fairyland bubble where nothing was ever going to really happen. I've gone through every site I can think of today and made much more secure and completely different passwords for every single site and written the whole lot in a book (my family are all open and trustworthy so no worries there). I was one of those numpties who, when I couldn't log in, reset my password to the same one, assuming my tablet was playing up. I've changed it now, of course. It's been a massive wake up call.

paleblue don't be a knob. I expect you're dependent on someone or something. How about if your H is an EA wanker and your mum is an alcoholic and your DF has Parkinson's disease as well as caring for your mum. You know, MN is a valuable resource. So don't be a cunt. It's not for you to judge what people find supportive.

MN has literally saved my sanity, living alone as I do with an ex who hounds me and parents who rely on me and a 6 day a week job full of people demanding the earth from me.

I'm sure you didn't mean to be so rude.

PurpleDaisies · 19/08/2015 19:33

Don't get me wrong, mumsnet is brilliant and I love the forum. I absolutely want to let MNHQ know that I support them during this difficult period.

It isn't a charity though-it is a business that makes money from advertising which is largely because there are so many users of this site. I don't think donations from users are really what a professional website should be relying upon to finance what should be a basic requirement (security for users). So I'm not sure MNHQ would necessarily be keen to go down that route anyway.

lavent · 19/08/2015 19:30

Didn't there used to be a charge to send PMs....? Or am I making that up?

PaleBlueDot · 19/08/2015 19:27

you really can't imagine life without MN? Jeez, I had no idea how dependant some folk were on this site.

neuroticattimes · 19/08/2015 19:24

Isn't the best way of supporting MN is to keep using it?
Takes more than this to scare MNetters.

StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:20

God no it's fine. I am not very good at expressing myself..Smile

Onwards and upwards.

Sorry op if I sounded abrupt, just feeling a bit paranoid right now Blush

It was a nice thought! I do like to see the posts supporting MNHQ to be honest.

wannaBe · 19/08/2015 19:14

You pay them for the service they provide, your bill doesn't depend on how vulnerable they let your computer to be to hackers

StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:09

Uh, I do pay my internet provider..I think...

OP posts:
StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:09

Fair enough - look it was just a thought. Tbh I've thought for years that it was worth paying for. Something like a fiver a year - but they didn't want to as that would stop those who really can't afford it from registering.

I don't know the answer.

I think though that really top rate security does cost, and what I'm saying is that I'd be willing to pay towards that if it could be configured somehow.

I cannot imagine life without MN. I really can't.

AndDeepBreath · 19/08/2015 19:08

Well banks do rely on your money. FBs pretty shaky isn't it in privacy terms? Don't tend to use email anymore apart to sign up to websites ... But yeah I do see your point Smile

AndDeepBreath · 19/08/2015 19:06

Agreed though. Glad I'm not the one trying to sort it all out!

wannaBe · 19/08/2015 19:06

Look at it this way. Do you think we should pay for privacy? To the bank? Fb? Your email provider? mn is no different.

AndDeepBreath · 19/08/2015 19:06

It's not "hilarious" that people want to do something to help. It's a valuable service and we value it - that's what we're saying.

FruSirkaOla · 19/08/2015 19:04

Only if I posted a Fiver to MN Towers by snail mail.

But wannaBe is right, MN is a mega business now. Decent security should be at the top of its list.

HoneyDragon · 19/08/2015 19:04

We've been hacked and someone pops up suggesting financial donation online Grin

Hilarious.

MaudGonneMad · 19/08/2015 19:04

No thanks.

MNHQ makes money off us already, you do know.

LynetteScavo · 19/08/2015 19:03

.

AndDeepBreath · 19/08/2015 19:02

Depends how you fundraise. JustGiving or something is pretty secure?

Guess you're not wrong about ad revenue etc!

FortyCoats · 19/08/2015 19:01

And this...

Absolutely no way would I do this - if I had made a payment to MN I would be even more worried right now about what details Jeffrey has!

LynetteScavo · 19/08/2015 19:01

There are so many reasons this is a bad idea.....

FortyCoats · 19/08/2015 19:01

Mn is a multi million £ business, they can more than afford decent security.

This ^

StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:00

Yes that's a good point Miss Duke...

OP posts:
StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:00

It could be a voluntary donation when you sign up - or they could become a charity?!

Sorry, I am as thick as fuck when it comes to things like this (did anyone notice). I just want to help.
