Can we donate?

I'm thinking that it will cost a bit to get the security on here sorted properly following all this bollocks, and I for one would be quite willing to pay a sub or just a one off donation in order to keep MN going - I know you don't need us to but if those of us who could, chipped in, it might make a difference?

Sorry if this is inappropriate. Thanks to all of you at HQ for the work you are doing. I can't imagine life without MN and though I realise not everyone is in a position to do this it would be worth every penny to me.

Just putting it out there.

Not as bad as some hacks, but certainly not something you would want people to think you posted. I can't remember it all, but it was mainly some unpleasant stereotypes about black people. It was deleted quite quickly so I don't think many posters saw it.

thatstoast · 20/08/2015 16:46

Yes, I think I'm on my 4th new password in two days. Thankfully I don't use the same passwords across sites.

Koalifications

I have emailed mumsnet about that as it appeared on 'threads I'm on' but is now deleted so I have no idea what was posted. I suspected someone/the hacker was using my account but I haven't received a reply from MNHQ. Was it very bad?

LynetteScavo · 20/08/2015 15:53

I won't leave you Justine! Even if my opinions on lemon drizzle cake are exposed for all I know in RL to see.

StephanieBeacham · 20/08/2015 07:19

Thank you for responding Justine, on top of everything else, and I understand - vague memories of the legal stuff when SWSNBN kicked off, that's all. Anyway, Flowers and I am glad to hear it's all very much in hand.

thatstoast did you start that thread on the Baby names board today, that was a bit racist?

JustineMumsnet · 19/08/2015 23:30

Hey OP and others, thank you so much for the kind thought. I'm not sure I'd describe us as a multi-million pound business but we are a business for sure and you really don't need to donate. We are incurring additional costs on security audits/experts/defences against DNS attacks but as has rightly been said, that's something we absolutely feel is a necessary business expense and not something we should scrimp on.

But it would be helpful if you don't all leave! (or at least if you do, you come back when all this is over)

thatstoast · 19/08/2015 22:15

This is my first day in this namechange and ive been insulted three times! no one even noticed me under my last name

The first time I started a thread on mumsnet I was called a cunt by at least 3 different posters. It wasn't even AIBU but at least it's not netmums Grin

Mn is a multi million £ business, they can more than afford decent security.

I'd donate. Mumsnet's a force for good. That ad revenue doesn't go anything like as far as people imagine.

PaleBlueDot · 19/08/2015 20:59

I did not say it like a dick.

you read it as if I was a dick.

there is a massive difference.

However I also read it as if I was a dick, it was not typed in a dick like fashion. please tell me that makes sense.

and stop with the knob, cunt and dick references.

This is my first day in this namechange and ive been insulted three times! no one even noticed me under my last name

Penfold007 · 19/08/2015 20:58

Mumsnet a £5 million plus per annum organisation needs charity status or donations!!! Seriously?

thatstoast · 19/08/2015 20:38

I literally had no idea of how some people value that resource until that moment.so I said that.

You said it like a dick but it's nice of you to clarify that you're not a dick. Neither am I.

OP, I don't think that a financial donation is the way forward. I will continue to use mumsnet now that I've changed my password to something extra secure. I was on the dreaded list! I value and support this site.

blowinahoolie · 19/08/2015 20:26

Mn is a multi million £ business, they can more than afford decent security.

^ this.

dilbert19912 · 19/08/2015 20:11

It's not naive at all. I understand fully about mn being a business but it's such a valuable service people are merely trying to help and show how valuable they feel it is.

PaleBlueDot · 19/08/2015 20:10

mrsmorton. no I didn't mean to be so rude and didn't mean to belittle the poster.

I literally had no idea of how some people value that resource until that moment.

so I said that.

I am sure however, that you did mean to be so rude by calling me a knob and a cunt in one post Confused

StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 20:10

wake up? can you elaborate instead of just shouting in my ear? Smile

CockwombleJeff · 19/08/2015 20:08

What a completely naive suggestionConfused.

PLEASE wake up OP!

ExcuseMyEyebrows · 19/08/2015 19:59

Didn't there used to be a charge to send PMs....? Or am I making that up?

Yes, lavent, iirc there was an annual £5 subscription to be able to CAT I think

StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:50

I do get the points about it being a business and everything.

OP posts:
StephanieBeacham · 19/08/2015 19:49

Thank you Posy and Mrs M - I guess some people really don't understand how much it matters.

Not to use it every day or anything necessarily but the amount I have gained from MN just being there is immeasurable, and I've been here about 8 years, and no, I can't imagine it not being here.

Mrs M, you've helped me more than once yourself Smile

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 19/08/2015 19:46

I wouldn't. I think it's a fair exchange atm. Content from us and a place to chat from mn. Advertising is a good trade off for the revenue.
