Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers
MNHQ

I've just looked at the mobile site. It was a horrible experience.

Fiderer · 06/08/2015 14:28

Ah, yes I was too hasty in my in&out dash. And too cowardly to scroll.

Colours still as they were, Maryz. Classic still going strong and fwiw I never cared about muted/workplace either.

Haven't done a thing apart from my brave/foolhardy dash into Customise. I got Soup's screen too.

Lord knows what's happened to Bertie's.

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 14:26

You still get the headers and tabs etc with the mobile site.

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 14:24

Mine is desktop too. See, I didn't even remove the desktop bits in the screen shot Grin

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 14:24

The full customise page...

Desktop site

BertieBotts · 06/08/2015 14:22

Sorry, not sure why that has resized itself. It was full screen size when I uploaded it. Hope you can read it okay.

I already use new so it looks like it's disabled for me - perhaps once you switch you can't switch back?

Huh, where is that?

This is what my customise looks like.

They have removed Muted and Workplace.

Right chaps, I have been in and it was pretty hair-raising I can tell you.

I sneaked in, had a quick glance and didn't click anything.

The options are now "MN New" and "MN Classic" so we may have cautious grounds for optimism.

Now please excuse me, I need a bucket of gin.

Same here - Bertie said it had disappeared from the options but NO WAY am I going to check!

No worries, Mary - RL can be a bit of a bugger like that! Grin

There was a message on one of the other threads, saying that MNHQ would post any updates on this thread, but as yet there haven't been any.

I would imagine their tin hats are getting in the way of them achieving much, even though they said they would fix the colours so that at least OP and own posts were different to each other.

PLEASE. TURN. OFF. THE. AUTOMATIC. ADDING. TO. 'THREADS. I'M. WATCHING.'

Because you seem to be a bit hard of hearing MNHQ/Tech team!

'Threads I'm On' is totally different from 'Threads I'm Watching'. I'm wondering if you actually know how your users use your site?

I'm not going to click on anything about customisation because I don't want to bugger up the other settings.

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 13:52

Currently it is sludge green for both OP and you.

Arrrghhhh. What has happened to the highlighting options????

I used to highlight the thread starter in one colour and my posts in another. Easy to scan thread etc.

Now they're BOTH in a rather nasty shade of bright green. NSFW for a start.

Another example of bloody tech people making "improvements" that are actually crap. We get it at work, and now here. Yuk

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/08/2015 12:39

"I can work out all by myself if I want to watch a thread without having it done automatically for me."

Exactly this! Whoever thought it needed to be "made easier" to watch threads?? Where was the thread asking about it?

VivaLeBeaver · 06/08/2015 12:30

For the love of God please put it back to how it was.

I don't want threads I reply to added to threads im on. I keep forgetting to do the box. My watched threads list will get huge and I won't be able to find the important, saved for ever stuff.

I need the colours for my posts and OPs posts.

ElementaryMyDearWatson · 06/08/2015 12:15

Gah, I don't want to change anything in case I lose my current colours, but I keep forgetting to untick the "Watch this thread" box when I post, as a result of which I have to keep deleting things from my watched thread box. Seriously MN, why on earth did you think that would be a helpful thing to do? I can work out all by myself if I want to watch a thread without having it done automatically for me.
