Please do start another thread about the hide poster option, but avoid making it personal.

I would like to be able to hide goady / drum-banging / just plain boring posters. I would not at all mind being hidden by everyone else.

Anyone else have comments they've not made yet on this one?

I actually liked the 'sock puppet of shame' idea from the other thread for that. :)

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 16/06/2015 07:35

Jux

that is a good idea at first, shit brown is a suitable shade for goady fuckers and uppity fuckers.Grin
but wouldn't it give them the very attention they crave so much?
I'm thinking glittery pink would be the equivalent of the "walk of shame"Wink

Jux · 16/06/2015 07:19

I still think that when a goady fucker is identified but not banned their posts should be coloured shit brown. It would make it easier to identify their posts and so easier to ignore them. Same with ockpuppets - shit brown posts.

bumbleymummy · 15/06/2015 23:42

I don't like the 'hide poster' idea for the reasons I gave on the last thread and for the reasons people are giving on this one.

"I suggested ages ago that we should have a dialog or similar saying "you are posting as NameOne. You have already posted on this thread as NameTwo. Are you sure?""

I think this is a good idea. If it is a long running thread and you've posted under a different, seasonal name or whatever then you can just click "Yes, I'm sure" and post under your new name. I can see how it would help people who maybe change name to post a sensitive thread and then accidentally 'out' themselves and I also think it could serve as a bit of a warning for sock puppets.

Oh, and just in case anyone was wondering - I didn't ask for the last thread to be deleted. I said I was happy for it to stand as it was.

Sparklingbrook · 15/06/2015 22:43

i can't claim to have invented it sooty, but it does sum it up very nicely. Grin

ilovesooty · 15/06/2015 22:34

Great term "bitch plop" Sparkling

They start so many threads it's like forum diarrhoea.

magimedi · 15/06/2015 22:30

*I don't like the idea of a hide poster option.

There's a reasonable chance that many people would hide the same provocative, goady, insensitive and generally PITA posters, potentially leaving new and more fragile members to face it themselves without the support or extra report button pressing that more experienced and robust members might provide.*

Agree 100% with what Polter says above.

Just skim over those you don't like & if you really, really feel that bad log off.

I said it in the deleted thread & I will say it again - it's just a forum, not real life. Don't get so over invested in the internet.

Sparklingbrook · 15/06/2015 22:16

Well said sooty. the posters that bitch plop everywhere then as soon as everyone is wound up enough just namechange to start again. They are the problem.

LineRunner · 15/06/2015 22:13

The goading is ruining this site. It can even sometimes be subtle but it's quite deliberate.

ilovesooty · 15/06/2015 20:58

As I said before I'd like MNHQ to deal more robustly with PBP s and goady name changers as a priority. There are some whose posting style makes them ridiculously easy to spot and they're invariably really rude to other posters before they depart only to reappear with their shiny new username. I'd like HQ to deal with those who name change just because they know that their thread will upset people and they don't want their unpleasant tripe associated with their usual id.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/06/2015 20:58

Oh polter - that's something I hadn't thought of.

I do think it will be deployed in a barney. A way to always get the Last Word.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 15/06/2015 20:58

I think I'd rather have a "hide the children" button. or a mute button.
You achieve that MNHQ, you'll be instant Nobel Peace Prize winner

ilovesooty · 15/06/2015 20:53

I hid someone on digital spy who seemed to annoy just about everyone with his excessively long, capitalised thread titles his long monologues the way he upped his own threads and the broken record disingenuous rude debating style. Eventually the mods combined all his threads and left him to chunterGrin to himself.

My two hidden posters weren't hidden for 'having a different opinion', and I'd hazard a guess that the others using the hide function didn't use it for that, so I'm not sure why people keep saying that as if it is fact?

One of my 'hiddens' was extremely rude to me, was constantly deleted but not banned. Called me a muderer a number of times. Slagged off my family and my friends. I received my one and only warning after finally snapping, and at that point I said 'enough is enough' and uploaded the script.

The other simply snarked at me whenever we appeared on a thread together. I ignored it for a long time, whilst chuntering under my breath until one day I though "Eve, stop being a dick, just hide the sad fucker" - and I did.

Nothing to do with differing opinions.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/06/2015 20:40

I don't like the idea.
I think hiding all posts from one member would be unacceptable from an outing POV, and hiding just one talk name would encourage name changing for goady reasons.

I don't like it from a feel of the place POV either, but that is rather harder to explain.

Modestine · 15/06/2015 20:39

a different opinion isn't goading Quite

SouthWestmom · 15/06/2015 20:25

No
I can imagine a thread where loads of PMs go round suggesting someone is hidden
Someone isolated might realise they've been hidden and be really distraught
I think we need some people to toughen up a bit and accept that a different opinion isn't goading

TheFairyCaravan · 15/06/2015 19:43

I think alteredimages has hit the nail on the head as to why it wouldn't work imo.

MrsHathaway · 15/06/2015 19:35

Ok thanks.

Not slower than scanning for hidden posters though surely!

CoogerAndDark · 15/06/2015 19:30

Definitely if 'I've hidden X' was banned and dealt with. I've reservations that MNHQ would deal with it, but in theory, yes, why not.

YonicScrewdriver · 15/06/2015 19:29

Yes I think so MrsH. I think there's one table with user12345's IDs (Rod, Jane and Freddie or whatever) and that's what populates the box. By default, user12345 maps to the ID they are currently using and there's only ever one primary ID.

To scan the thread for the presence of user12345 dynamically would I think be quite slow,

alteredimages · 15/06/2015 19:27

I wouldn't like this at all because I think we would end up with unreadable threads where parallel discussions were taking place because most posters couldn't see the whole thread.

I can see why the idea is attractive, there are some really provocative posts out there that stay just this side of the rules, but I think MN is great because it is open and so lightly moderated and the wide range of people and views is where its strength lies.

Moln · 15/06/2015 19:11

*couldn't read the OP

Moln · 15/06/2015 19:06

I've used a site were there was a hide poster option.

Have to say it didn't really work, because when the hidden poster wrote something in a thread instead of their post you would see "this post is by username, who is on you hid list - click here to read" (I paraphrase as I can't really recall the exact words). Not reading it made the thread disjointed, especially if they had posted a lot.

Also if you can't stand a poster for whatever reason and you want to be able to use a function to hide their post due to the fact you get drawn in due to curiosity killing the cat situation then it's not going to work as when you see they have posted but cant read what they have posted then the chances are you're going to unhide every post!!

Also, on this site you could still see threads started by a hidden poster (big flaw that!) just could read the OP!
