Please do start another thread about the hide poster option, but avoid making it personal.

I would like to be able to hide goady / drum-banging / just plain boring posters. I would not at all mind being hidden by everyone else.

Anyone else have comments they've not made yet on this one?

Does the widget work with the Mac?

I have no idea what I use - possibly Safari.

I think I might have said it on the previous threads, but MN advise to ignore trolls, as answering them just gives them the attention they crave. Surely a 'hide poster on this thread' button would achieve just that?

If it is limited to a thread by thread basis, then that should mitigate against the concerns about bullying (although personally I don't think not responding to someone on a thread could be classed as bullying).

I'm also not convinced that it would lead to mass hiding of posters. If 2 or 3 posters who know each other decide that they can't stand my posts, and I can't see that they have been hidden, surely it makes little difference to me? There are thousands of different posters on MN - we would need to be very bloody organised to get everyone to hide one particular poster.

I remember a while ago having a difference of opinion with a poster on a thread, and for weeks after she seemed to pop on every thread I was on (no matter what subject) and make snarky, snippy comments to me. I would have quite liked 'hide poster on this thread' button, as I just ended up hiding whole threads, and actually would have quite liked to have seen what other posters had to say on the threads. That felt more like bullying to me.

Just in case anyone's interested:

www.edochan.com/widgets/mumsnet/

You add it as an extension through chrome. On firefox as well I think though haven't tried that. Doesn't work on the app. Haven't tried on the mobile site.

That's my thought. It's laughable that people think hiding would be bullying, when it's the borderline bitchiness and insults that squeak through the MN filter by the skin of their teeth that are the real bullying!!

Samcro · 17/06/2015 11:40

or are they bullies for winding you up??

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2015 10:45

well said Samcro. I hide every thread started by a couple of posters. Does that make me a bully? Confused

Samcro · 17/06/2015 10:32

god people do over use the word bullying.
hiding someone because the wind you up, does not make you a bullly.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/06/2015 10:28

Exactly iknow- no one will know the same as no one knows now of you hide an entire thread. There really is no difference.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 17/06/2015 10:27

Personally I don't see it as bullying or blanking. I see it as not having to put up with an annoyance if I don't have to.

They won't know they've been blocked, same as people don't know when I've posted something & then just hidden the thread as I can't be arsed reading the replies - which happens when I'm really not interested in what some people have to say.

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2015 08:11

yes Teal, places to go, people to see......

Modestine · 17/06/2015 08:06

Yes, Noeuf, I agree with your posts upthread.

TealFanClub · 17/06/2015 07:30

because you have a life? Sparkers? Grin

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2015 07:29

I am just going to carry on as normal. Keep on hiding threads and topics as I go. If i don't reply to something i have most likely hidden the thread.

SouthWestmom · 17/06/2015 07:16

Hysteria? Works both ways then. Those of us opposed are about as excitable as those in favour.
Modestine - that reflects what I said upthread

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2015 06:14

Yes it does seem to be very worrying to some.

LineRunner · 17/06/2015 06:12

I agree it's not going to happen. Interesting the hysteria the very thought provokes in some posters, though.

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2015 06:07

It's not going to happen anyway. It's wouldn't be bullying though. You wouldn't know you had been hidden.

Timetoask · 17/06/2015 06:06

I don't like this idea.
It has a feel of mass bullying to me.
People will feel frightened of expressing their opinion.

TealFanClub · 17/06/2015 06:05

I must never go on seeiuss threads. I never see them

But guys. Just ignore. Don't engage. Mumsnet is so easy to wind up.

Modestine · 17/06/2015 06:03

Where is the line between expressing an opinion which is not mainstream on MN, and pushing an agenda? If expressing a non-mainstream opinion, in whatever area of life - politics, health, whatever - is now considered "being a goady fucker", then that is new to MN and needs to be clarified in the Talk Guidelines. Also acceptable and unacceptable opinions need to be defined beyond what's currently in the guidelines, although those have been clear enough up to this point and have been obvious common sense. If MNers can be banned for expressing non-majority views, then the lines do have to be clear, otherwise it's arbitrary. Surely most people posting on politics would be at risk of being banned, since in a democracy, there is a vast range of opinion. If you can only express an opinion a limited number of times, how many is permissible?

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2015 06:02

If someone is being an arse then report. Even if you agree with them.

TealFanClub · 17/06/2015 05:37

They have a hide thread. And you could just actually ignore them. Like yourself. As an adult.

mathanxiety · 17/06/2015 04:29

Chopped off my last sentence there --

"but we are grown ups here."

mathanxiety · 17/06/2015 04:27

One person's goady fucker is another person's favourite who gets patted on the back every time she 'goads'. It's subjective.

I disagree with this. It's not all subjective.

I think it is very obvious when someone is just arguing because they refuse to let anyone else have the last word, or when someone is pushing an agenda.

mathanxiety · 17/06/2015 04:20

I can't understand how a hide poster button would enhance freedom of speech or guard against homogeneity. If anything, you would be guaranteed more homogeneity.

Let's face it, it's not the tone of someone's replies, but also the content that makes people even now misuse the Report Poster function. Or do people honestly and hand on heart report people they agree with on a thread when they see they have posted something that contravenes the guidelines?

I am really opposed to a hide poster option.

MrsHathaway · 16/06/2015 22:24

I hide threads which have titles that bother me - either because I know they lead to bunfights or because I know the content will be triggering, usually. Sometimes because BORING. It cleans up Active (which is where I navigate from nearly all the time) to offer me in theory only active threads I might be interested in, as I also have irrelevant topics hidden.
