Fantasy government: who should have a shot at running the country?

Hello all

We can't help but notice a mild exasperation with the political class in general amongst Mumsnetters - so we wondered, who would you like to see running the country? Could be a Sleb or a Civilian, a silly or serious suggestion - do tell us who'd get your vote?

John Lydon in some sort of DWP/ disability rights role.

Judge Rinder for speaker. He'd soon cut out the rubbish.

ewanhoozami · 30/04/2015 10:19

Just listened to Sandi Toksvig on Woman's Hour. I was sorry to hear that she was leaving the News Quiz, but thrilled to now find out that it's for such a tremendous reason: The Women's Equality Party

Huzzah!

Love Miss Rabbit for work Grin

Dr Ranj for health?

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 29/04/2015 13:02

fairy Floella Benjamin is in the Lords, so in theory available to take up a ministerial post...

I'd like to see Yvette Cooper and Theresa May working together rather than against each other (you did say it was a fantasy government, right?)

happybubblebrain · 28/04/2015 23:15

I totally agree with Michael Rosen for education.

I think we could put any group of kid's TV presenters into government and they'd be better than the present lot. In exchange Boris could present cbeebies. We could find a job for David Cameron on zero hours, minimum wage, topped up with food bank parcels - that would be brilliant TV.

Kirsty Wark for PM, Paxo as her Deputy. Foreign Office/International Development/Defence all rolled into one, run by Michael Palin, who just goes forth and is NICE to people, and helps if needed, so no one will attack us anyway. JK for Education, with Stephen Fry as Deputy. Miss Rabbit for Work. Mary Berry for Pensions. NHS to be split between MN who handle the day-to-day and Oliver Sacks on research/future thinking except he's dying, which is just so sad, so I think he can audition his successor. MN can probably handle Finance and Law and Order too.

I'm mentally trying to scroll through people in the public eye who're nice and humane and practical and clever. It's quite hard. I was at our local zoo the other day and we realised too late it coincided with the regional Brownies jamboree. 4000 of them. Yikes. They'd camped out overnight in giant marquees. Must have been high as kites. But OMG the organisation was extraordinary. They all wore colour coded sashes, there were assembly stations dotted round for each of the subgroups, brown owls lugging round coolboxes to feed the 4000, the girls were all so POLITE. It was just amazing. I said to one of those women, who was VOLUNTEERING to do this, and who probably hadn't slept a wink in the marquee from hell, but was still organising jolly games for the girls...very, very proud to be an ex-Brownie, and to be British.

So maybe that's it. Just hand the whole shebang over to a consortium of brown owls. It would get done, wouldn't it.

EthelDurant123 · 28/04/2015 19:59

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall as Agriculture and Fisheries minister.

redshoeblueshoe · 28/04/2015 15:01

Butterfly - you are so right. Lets give all the MP's a zero hours contract - and see how they manage their ridiculously long holidays with no money. They should also have some accountability - they don't even have to turn up for work. unlike the rest of us mere mortals

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 28/04/2015 14:40

I quite like some of the people mentioned here. I'm not sure it would be kind to fuck them up by putting them in government :( Wink

butterflyballs · 28/04/2015 14:36

I reckon a lot of the women on this site could sort the country out.

How many women are budgeting on a monthly basis, getting bills paid, feeding the kids and still not going into debt?? Right, well that could transfer to the country. Mums and dads do without luxuries so we'd quite happily cut the expenses budget, cut down on all the subsidised crap and start prioritising the money where it's needed instead of cutting it from the most needy.

Job done. The mps can go and get a zero hour contract and find out how to live in the real world.

ArcheryAnnie · 28/04/2015 13:15

Oh, JK Rowling as Chancellor as she seems to be one of the few enormously rich people whose money hasn't sent them off the rails. She seems to be very sensible with it, and has a robust, practical and ethical approach to taxation (ie she pays her fair share, and a lot more besides).

ArcheryAnnie · 28/04/2015 13:12

Mary Beard and Tom Holland jobsharing on Culture and Heritage, so they both have time to still write books.

(But if they ever disagree on something Mary gets the casting vote.)

Camille Batmanghelidjh as Education Secretary.

Frances Crook at the Home Office.

Anthony Head as PM. He's obviously a natural diplomat, as he seems incapable of pissing anyone off while also being very good at what he does.

redshoeblueshoe · 28/04/2015 11:09

Justine for Chancellor - there would be free gin Star
AidenTurner for anything really - as long as he doesn't wear his shirt.

I think I'm getting good at this Grin

fairyelephantswellies · 28/04/2015 10:50

Floella Benjamin for education

crappyday · 28/04/2015 09:54

YY jed Bartlett for PM.
I miss westwing.

Flingmoo · 28/04/2015 08:54

redshoeblueshoe Yes yes yes, he'd be amazing!

Game of Thrones could definitely be a good source of dramatic politicians... certainly not conducive to world peace, but it would be entertaining. Defence minister? Khal Drogo? Grin

redshoeblueshoe · 28/04/2015 08:28

Tyrion Lannister for PM

Floundering · 28/04/2015 08:08

Clare Balding, Sandi Toksvig, Sue Perkins, Dawn French & Maureen Lipman.

With the Governess from The Chase to keep order when it gets too hilarious.

God they'd sort us out !!

( oh & Rachel Maddow as overseas rep)

Flingmoo · 28/04/2015 08:03

My old politics teacher for PM... really had his head screwed on.

Louis Theroux deserves a cabinet position too.

SirChenjin · 28/04/2015 07:43

YY to Nurse Jen from 24 hours in A&E - excellent suggestion!

BathshebaDarkstone · 28/04/2015 07:26

Blimey he'd keep order! Grin
