Hello all

There's a rather fabulous story in the news today, which suggests that the security services could benefit from MNers' skills. What do you think - time for us to make a [false beard] emoticon?

Ooh I'd love to be a spy. I can sniff out a dodgy smell from yards and yards away. I can run in heels too.

Mumsnet, can we have a spy emoticon?

AtSea1979 · 05/03/2015 16:08

Oh yes I've just finished season 5 of Chuck, count me in!

AskBasil · 05/03/2015 16:04

LOL oh please make a spy-related emoticon.

Security Services, please get in touch. I am short, like Judi Dench, so would make an excellent M. And my surname begins with an M as well, so I should prob get the job. But don't kill me off after the third film or whatever it was.

MildredDreadful · 05/03/2015 16:03

Ooh sign me up.

I have the kind of demeanour that makes people tell me their life story if I'm next to them on the bus. I'm ever so dull and unthreatening but also dead observant. Plus I'm super good at faces. (Not names, though, sadly).

Plus I am always equipped with a little notebook of shopping lists (codes and shizzle could be written down and no one would know really).

HermioneWeasley · 05/03/2015 15:57

Is it me or has the world gone circular?

FrankelandFilly · 05/03/2015 15:40

RedToothBrush GCHQ is in Cheltenham if that's more your cup of tea

Littleham · 05/03/2015 15:38

I will await a private message!

Also have two teenager who specialise in memorising entrance codes (when they see someone going through a secure door). They don't use them honestly, it is just a mental challenge to them!

JoanHicksonMIfive · 05/03/2015 15:36

Huffington post gets it. Wink

LaLaLaaaa · 05/03/2015 15:33

Sorry, should have given a fuller quote from the article, because it shows just how far sliceofsoup's words were misused:

'However, others were less optimistic about a successful recruitment scheme including a mother who suggested she couldn’t even hold water let alone international secrets.

'One said she was “too boring and frumpy” to be a spy"'

sliceofsoup · 05/03/2015 15:04
Hmm

Way to completely lie there. FFS.

Boring and frumpy is my cover, you pillock!

BritabroadinAsia · 05/03/2015 14:59

Yep, and I bet he didn't get the Nethuns reference, either...

PausingFlatly · 05/03/2015 14:57

And now I look more closely, one of the comments the journalist turned into

'One said she was "too boring and frumpy" to be a spy'

was actually

"I would LOVE to be a spy. Like actually LOVE it. And no one would suspect me. I am too boring and frumpy."

Null points to Tom Whitehead for accurate analysis of intelligence...

ArcheryAnnie · 05/03/2015 14:55

Libra0000 finding out how to apply is probably one of the tests to apply. (But asking outright as you did might just work - I love that as a possible new direction in covert operations!)

PausingFlatly · 05/03/2015 14:48

The journalist's update to the article, I mean.

PausingFlatly · 05/03/2015 14:42

Wow, that's um... well, rather a negative take on the lighthearted comments here.

While ignoring the posts like RedToothBrush's list of genuine structural issues which may affect diversity of recruitment...

DopeyDawg · 05/03/2015 14:39

Kraggle - I thought that too (we should get extra points!).
Wonder if it is an extra unofficial part of test?

LMLytton - REALLY???

educatingarti · 05/03/2015 14:38

"I wonder what hazels nn is?"

Squirrel Nutkin?

LMLytton · 05/03/2015 14:34

You know they have updated the article to reflect some comments from this thread...
