Has Mumsnet dumbed down over the past couple of years IYO? Or, if you're new, what's your impression?

Well? Just wondering what people think about this. Even if you're new, what's your view? (I don't want to be accused of oldster cliqueiness, I'm interested to hear what new people think too)

Cam, so sorry to hear about your MIL. And very hard for you to decide what to tell DD I'm sure.
Thinking of you all.

PhantomCAM · 15/10/2006 21:07

Fortunately dh can arrange his own time off so that's not a problem. I know you've been there Tigermoth, its the emotional aspect that's so hard isn't it?

We haven't really told dd the absolute truth yet as she loves her Grandma so much and as she's only 9 it will be hard to take on board...

Greensleeves · 15/10/2006 21:06

I wish I hadn't posted that. It was over and done with. I am sorry, Cam.

tigermoth · 15/10/2006 21:06

well said dior
And I am signing off for now, too.

Time to get back to real life again - Cam, are you joining me?

Greensleeves · 15/10/2006 21:02

I agree with Dior . You were thoroughly obnoxious on that thread and hurt several posters unnecessarily.

tigermoth · 15/10/2006 21:00

Cam, the distance is difficult, I know. I must be such a shock for you all. My mum was given a similar time length when she was diagnosed, though lived for longer. I hope your dh's workplace are understanding about taking leave - now is not the time to hold back on it.

PhantomCAM · 15/10/2006 20:58

"Unpleasant, abrasive, patronising and childish"

Wonder if those are personal insults

FreakyFloss · 15/10/2006 20:53

I have the answer! If MN is dumbing down because of lower classes - lets only make MN available on premium broadband packages. I shall contact mn headquarters immediately with this idea - they must be having many sleepless nights with this sudden increase in traffic an [gasp] potential rise in revenue!

of course by doing this i myself could no longer post on mn, but hey - all for the greater cause....

PhantomCAM · 15/10/2006 20:51

Thanks Tigermoth, its been a hard couple of weeks since finding out. She's in hospital at the moment and on morphine for the pain. Unfortunately she lives at the other end of the South Coast from us but dh spent all day with her on Friday and feels that he cheered her up a bit.

tigermoth · 15/10/2006 20:49

The thing I think that has changed about mumsnet is that today, you could live, eat breathe mumsnet, post on 100 threads a day and it would not be that noticeable, as there are so many threads.
If you had done that 4 years ago, you'd have stood out much more and probably worried a lot of people. The bigger site encourages obsessiveness IMHO.

DastardlyDevilishDior · 15/10/2006 20:48

I am genuinely sorry for you and your dh re your MIL though. As I said, please can we just ignore each other now. I'm sick of arguing and it is thoroughly unpleasant for everyone else on here. You can't get on with everyone in life.

do you think HMC, I was just thinking how mild it is

tigermoth · 15/10/2006 20:44

Oh Cam, I am so sorry.

handlemecarefully · 15/10/2006 20:43

Probably not the best move to dredge all this up again though eh?

Turned a bit colder out, hasn't it?

moaningpaper · 15/10/2006 20:42

Look you can't have this argument HERE

This place is turning into a Hairdresser's

Well Dior, I think its bizarre and rude of you to bring up a thread from the past to attack me with on this thread.

Particularly bizarre considering the following:

My MIL (who I love) has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has been given a couple of months to live. It's all a bit of a shock as she only developed symptoms a short time ago. My dh (her son) is distraught and I am supporting him the best I can.

Now do shut up there's a good girl.

moaningpaper · 15/10/2006 20:39

I think it probably HAS dumbed down but I think that Quadrofiendia is right - I expect that the demographic is a lot wider now than it was 2 years ago which is a good thing

Just seen "Can u put a condom on sexy" which I think proves the point

tigermoth · 15/10/2006 20:38

Croppy, Aloha and Bells used to post some pretty cerebral stuff - none of them post now, which is sad.

The site has got more varied, but there's still stuff that gives my brain a workout.

If I am pushed for time, I just do a few searches using other people's names - people who IMO post on the threads that are interesting and thought provoking.

DastardlyDevilishDior · 15/10/2006 20:31

Yes Fox, it was hard for Pages to read. Luckily, she got a lot of support. I just get cross on other people's behalf. I always have been a little too quick to mouth off before thinking, despite meaning well.

foxinsocks · 15/10/2006 20:28

oh dior

from what I remember, that thread was very odd because there was another (more aggressive) poster on there (one who I hadn't seen before) and it all got a bit hyped up

anyway, I shouldn't stick my wick in here really. I'll let you two get on with it.

DastardlyDevilishDior · 15/10/2006 20:26

Anyway, I don't like this situation, despite what you may think of me. We could, I suspect, exchange unpleasantries all night, but it is just uncomfortable for all MN users. Let's just drop it can we? We can go our merry ways and ignore each other. I regret riling you tonight, purely based on one thread. As I said, I had no problem with any of your previous postings. I just felt sorry for Pages as I was in a similar situation at the time.
