Mumsnet mafia ??!!!

Am a really new poster to Mumsnet having just found out I am pregnant for the first time EDD June 1st, have been surfing the site and making a few posts but have been very surprised by the amount of vitriol in some of the posts on certain subjects, and am amazed about people outing other people and everyone seems to know everyone elses business - more than you might expect on a forum? How does that work?? Is there like a bunch of people who all live in the same road or something? Just wondering as on most forums I post on there are lots of people sharing views but it rarely gets that personal inn terms of people getting to know other people off line. Made me wonder if there is a Mumsnet mafia in place!! Makes me alightly concerned about posting my thoughts and feelings about the things that are happening to me and about how my privacy will be respected.

thats not cliquey unpleasent behaviour at all

i'mm not feeling at all intimidated or belittled

you must be really nice supportive people

humble? Sorry enid if I am mis-interpretting, but that does make it sound like newbies ought to come shuffling in, cap in asking asking, in their inherent unworthiness, for permission to be accepted...
I would argue there are a lot of regular MNers, who aren't especially humble...

isn't that inevitable? The forum has been going for many years and some members have been here since the start, it's natural that some of them have a close bond. (isn't it?)

periodically a fairly random group (not always the same people) in mumsnet have a huge bun fight and temporary meltdown ensues - with lots of mudslinging. Sometimes these events are provoked by the people concerned (as the recent one may have been). Lots of others watch in bemusement - not quite understanding what is going on. But the vast majority of people who post on here don't get involved.

The rest of the time it is a very funny, supportive friendly place, that can get argumentative at times. And yes many of the women are hormonal - also people tend to be more vociferous in the anonymity of a web forum.

You can get really good support here - and if there is something you really don't want to be identified for then as someone suggested use a temporary alias for that topic alone.

Some people go to meet ups or otherwise become friends off-line - giving the impression of some notion of insiderness. Just like the rest of life really.

So post as you feel fit, and enjoy.

It works both ways, sorry if you feel got at. But I think some of us felt offended by the term mumsnet mafia.

Alternatively we could have an interview panel for all the newbies to see if they are up to scratch. I wont tell you who would be on the panel.

I have been posting on the June 2007 thread, and a stats thread, and on a tiredness in early pregnancy thread

i was making an observation with this thread after the weekend, not meant to be controversial, only indicating that there is a quorum of people who all seem very tight

maybe I should only come back here and post when i know all the right terms and have all the right abbreviations so I don't say anything wrong

what horrible, snobbish things to say
