Hi all,

As you know we have launched the new mobile site, we know it's a big change and we are still very keen to get it right with your help. This is very much a version that will evolve with your help as part of the testing process.

There have been a few glitches that have/are being ironed out and the HUGE thread has nearly maxed out, so we thought it best to start a shiny new one.

We know change is tricky but, as with most things MN, we are all ears and happy to look at any feedback you have on ways we can improve the new site.

Thanks all Thanks

Having read that some of the 'glitches ' have been fixed, I thought I would give it another chance and just tried again. I unfortunately I found it is still taking a ridiculous amount of time to load a page - I gave up after five minutes and returned to the desktop site.
Sorry MN, I really don't understand why you needed to do a complete redesign in order to fix a couple of minor problems. You have succeeded in making the mobile site unusable for me and as I do over 90% of my MNing on my phone, I will be spending much less time on here in future. The desktop site works passably well on my phone, but not well enough for me to use it with anything like the same frequency as I do now.

Imo, in trying to make it 'better', you have actually succeeded in making it so bad as to be unusable for many users and you seem determined not to listen to the many who are asking for the option of a classic version. You may be 'completely' sure we will all grow to love it, I can assure you that many of us won't.

SoonToBeSix · 21/08/2014 15:59

I feel like you have sold out to advertisers MNHQ. It's bad form.

FoxSticks · 21/08/2014 15:58

No bookmark option on the S3, I'm glad flip this thread is now available and that you are working on the slow loading.

SoonToBeSix · 21/08/2014 15:58

Rebecca the advert at the top keeps flicking I cannot use a site with a constantly changing advert at the top. I would rather pay to get rid if it. Please can we get rid of the top advert.

MultipleMama · 21/08/2014 15:57

MrsVamos - Bathrooms have locks?! Who knew! Grin

I just want colour to break up this awful white, be able to actually hide my posts stupid button doesn't work, and see recents posts on TIO and I'll be able to tolerate it.

But MN needs to learn how to better plan things and have more than 2 staff on. It's also Bank Hol on Monday so I doubt much will be done then either...

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 15:56

They will have no-one left to read the adverts at this rate!

ophiotaurus · 21/08/2014 15:55

I saw mentioned that they "had no choice" to release it yesterday. This leads me to believe that they've signed an advertising contract stating the new site will be up and running on X date which means if they hadn't released it, they'd be in breach of contract.

The fact they aren't answering why speaks volumes. It's to do with advertising.

Tinkerball · 21/08/2014 15:54

Why can't the colour options be what we set it ourselves in our account, like on the desk top? Why has it had to change ???

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2014 15:54

MNHQ. It is better than it was. Flowers

Keep going.

LittleBearPad · 21/08/2014 15:53

bigarea have you switched bookmarking on in the desktop version. It's somewhere in customise.

EduCated · 21/08/2014 15:51

Thank you muchly for the page doodahs at the top. Much appreciated.

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 15:51

BigArea

That's a pain.

That was the only thing I liked about the new site, the smileys.

Would like that on desktop actually.

To comment on RebeccaMumsnet's post from the previous huge thread:
In Tech speak
On most of the new mobile talk pages, google is now showing a score of 100/100 for mobile usability.

Which we're reliably told is to do with best practice on 'Tap targets' and 'legible fonts' and 'size content to viewport'

Usability in that context is in terms of how usable the site is on a mobile. It may well be "usable" from a purely layout point of view (preventing fat fingers). This usability has had the effect of reducing functionality, though, which is thus making for a poorer user experience at the expense of improving technical usability.

It might be worth pointing your tech guys at this seminal book on web user experience... : Don't Make Me Think by Steve Crug (hopefully they already have a copy - "hallway usability testing", anyone...?)

alarox · 21/08/2014 15:50

Getting used to the new site now, I am still having trouble when trying to zoom in on an image though. I know you've tweaked it so you can click to enlarge an image, but it doesn't enlarge much, and zooming in seems to push the image out of my screen's field of view (I'm using a Galaxy Note 2).

Also, the Reddit App has options to select a theme, 'light' or 'dark'. Is this possible on Mumsnet? So people who prefer reading white text on a dark background can switch?

Germgirl · 21/08/2014 15:50

I'm definitely logged in.
Oh well. I'll wait & hopefully one day will be able to bookmark. Suppose it's not the end of the world if I can't.
Is there going to be a new Talk app? The old one is horrid, although it's less horrid than it used to be.

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 15:47

ophiotaurus

Gawd, I hope not. Sad

Just shows then if thats the case that as I have seen mentioned, mnet is becoming much more a commercial business and advertising site that it is 'by parents for parents'.

What a crock.

Beeyump · 21/08/2014 15:46

The whole thing just seems so unnecessary

Beeyump · 21/08/2014 15:45

CAN WE HAVE THE OLD SITE BACK PLEASE?

Just to echo silverlining Smile. Seriously, though...

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 15:45

Rats, ElBandito.

I think that is what we will be asked tonight. To be patient so that 'they' can sort more things out tomorrow.

It's half 3 now. I never got a reply asking if Tech were working late tonight, and after tomorrow it's the weekend.

I think so much was wrong, it was released live far too early and they are now trying frantically to put it all into place.

Would have been far better to have stopped, put old site back up and started again.

I would still like to know just how crap the other options were if what was released was the best !

And I still want to know why it needed changing ?

And, and, (whining again) who besides one that I know of, were the testers ? Did it not occur to any of them to ask why it needed changing ?

If it has been done to suit and 'fit' with FB and Twatter I shall be cross.

If I wanted to use either of those sites, that don't let you use complete anonimity like mumsnet does, I would. I don't , and I won't.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

ophiotaurus · 21/08/2014 15:44

I have a horrible feeling that the desktop and app are going to be made to look the same as the new mobile site.

This can be the only explanation as to why it looks so different.

I predict a re-branding/overhaul - whatever you want to call it - over the next few months.

BigArea · 21/08/2014 15:39

Thanks MrsVam - just turned laptop on to check and doesn't work on desktop site in either new or classic view, never has done for me - must be OS related I suppose. Still not working on new mobile site either, there's just not a bookmark option there when I click on the dots. I am on an iphone, no idea whether that is relevant. Still, the drop down smileys are nice Grin Thanks

ElBandito · 21/08/2014 15:38

Mrs Vam and multiplemama
I can Watch a thread but no options to unwatch or bookmark.
Will see what happens and try again later or tomorrow.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 21/08/2014 15:37

The floating ad banner which keeps changing Angry is doing my head in all by itself & I don't have any health/reading issues...

Grrrrrrr

MrsVamos · 21/08/2014 15:36

You want TMI ? Grin

I can't pee in peace because the dog or 1 of 3 cats follows me. I also sometimes forget my loo and bathroom doors do have a lock. Blush

MultipleMama · 21/08/2014 15:34
Grin

Although I'm not a stage where I can have peace in the loo room yet due to my DC's ages. Dammit! Grin I long to pee in peace --TMI- Blush
