Possibly because they have the money and support to fight a court case. If you know someone does not have the money to fight a case, the mere threat of one will achieve what you want.

what I don't understand is how something that is patently untrue and in fact absurd can be libellous. Why aren't all of the comedians and satirists in the country being sued?

Interestingly, on the Daily Mail website there was the option to add "Readers' comments" to the article - which I took advantage of. However, when I just looked, that option has been removed. I wonder why? Especially as no comments had actually been printed.
