EXCUSE ME - OVER HERE - BRILL IDEA

I would like to suggest a new 'sub topic' on MN.

Have noticed very personal questions that lead to cries of TROLL TROLL and general piss taking and why post a question like that etc etc

Well, for a lot of people, there are things that trouble them that they would be mortified to even try to discuss with rl friends, yet they know they would like to talk with someone. The internet is a wonderful resource, but also it is good to have the opportunity to say - what about this then, is this normal? and get info/advice/support from a bunch of people who don't know you and you don't have to face! so you can talk about those things that worry you anonymously and know they aren't going to discuss it with your other mates!!!

But a lot of people seem to get wound up and go onto such threads to take the piss or to cry troll, or even to say the poster shouldn't have started the thread so wouldn't it be great to have a section called, I don't know, Personal, or something, so everybody knows what kind of advice is likely to be needed and those who dont want to participate in such threads can just not peruse that section!

How about it?

Oh Dear - i took the piss too

SoupDragon · 15/11/2005 19:36

I don't think it would make a blind bit of difference tbh. If it's in Active conversations, there will still be cries of "troll! troll!" and if it isn't in active conversations then no one will post on it. Which kind of defeats the whole purpose of posting it.

Yes, Dropintheit probably was an honest thread (the pong onebut it wasn't titled pong---that is what I titled mine based on input from another brilliant poster), but I just got so tickled about it that I got carried away and not only did a piss-take, but I started two additional and quite hysterical threads to follow it up. Very childish indeed.

dropinthe · 15/11/2005 16:33

BTW-missed the vagina pong thread! Think I would have probably been pissing myself laughing too much to post anything constructive.Just T.M.I,imo!

dropinthe · 15/11/2005 16:32

ssd-we are talking about many threads which innocent people have started for advice and who have then been shot down in flames by people who aren't interested in the subject matter or think it is too trivial to talk about but who can't resist the need to post unhelpful, sarcastic comments.

sunchowder · 15/11/2005 16:31

I am not usually a piss-taker, I am normally very nice, for some reason I totally lost control yesterday and I am seriously starting to regret it. I have never accused anyone of being a troll--vagina pong just gets to me I am not of sour-milk, I am of love and light and goodness and sometimes I do lose control....

ssd · 15/11/2005 16:28

Sorry to be dim again, but are there really a lot of trolls on MN or are some of us just quick tempered and think the worst?

WigWamBam · 15/11/2005 16:26

Ouch ... I mean principle ...

WigWamBam · 15/11/2005 16:26

I think it's a good idea in principal, and you are right when you say that "troll" shouldn't be the first thing that people think when they see a strange name or a strange topic, but knowing Mumsnet I can't see p*ss takers keeping off the thread just because it's in a special section. Sometimes I don't even register what topic a thread is under, and of course there are a lot of people here who hate being told not to post and who would post on such a topic just to make a point.

I do think it would be nice if there was a safe place to post personal questions where the assumption is that you are serious, but sadly it's very much open to abuse (either by the trolls or the p*ss takers).

Mytwopenceworth · 15/11/2005 16:26

meggy - nothing wrong with reservations! we are exchanging opinions!

doormat bend over!

Zeph - really, how awful

I didnt start this thread to have a go about anybody, that's not what this is. I just feel sorry for people who post something and get jumped on. maybe they are very worried and dont have anyone to talk to. there has to be a safe place to accomodate that here. Where nobody sneers or insults.

I mean if you post your Q there, it is a very clear sign that you are seriously looking for advice and tells people that its not a place to take the micky!

What thread are you all refering to, feel like the new girl who doesn't know what everyone is on about?

monstersmummy · 15/11/2005 16:24

a bit of respect and an assumption that not everyone is a troll just because they ask an odd question would solve that one.

or simply parp urself(or whatever ur supposed to say) and leave the thread

dropinthe · 15/11/2005 16:21

It must be hard being perfect,eh?

Zephyrcat · 15/11/2005 16:19

I think it's a nice idea too but won't stop the bitching - have you ever seen the threads about 'which threads annoy you' - there was even a mention that poems on the miscarriage/bereavement thread were crap Also if you suggest that they don't read/post/look elsewhere you really get it!!

doormat · 15/11/2005 16:17

agree mtpw that it would be useful
but tbh I dont think it will stop the name changing, I have only changed my name once for legal reasons but like sunny have asked personal questions with own name.
But still dont think it will stop the bitching.

btw I was a piss taker too so PLEASE beat me too

ssd · 15/11/2005 16:17

TBH I don't see the problem having it in active convo's, there's plenty there I don't post on, if it would rile some people they don't need to go into personal like I don't go into arts and crafts etc....

meggymoo-think there should be a name and shame thread then and if any one of those sarcy people want any advice in the future ,then they can sod off! This is a parenting site, afterall not a "who can be cleverer than thou" site! !

Mytwopenceworth · 15/11/2005 16:15

techie people can do anything can't they - a section that isn't included on active convos would not be too much for them!!!!!
