Oh! Oh! My firstborn starts secondary school in September. Surely that warrants a support thread?

Am I a bit too early for this?

I mean it's months away yet, isn't it?

dinosaur What exactly did he have to do for the photo? I don't see what the features of a photo are. I can understand the features of an article, but not a photo. Maybe I am just being thick? Grin

bigTillyMint · 20/09/2010 15:57

Lee2010, the teachers response to you was a bit worrying - ?This is a comprehensive it?s what they all do?. Er, it's not like that in all comps.

Lucky he has you looking out for him Smile

Can't believe it's week 3 already - worrying about her getting the bus seems a distant memory Grin

Sadly she's still getting used to the homework!

Morning all, I have managed to speak to his form tutor whom didn?t seem very amused at me wanting to speak to her but the situation was explained to the school in advance and it?s only until Wednesday anyway as I said to her.
Anyway I spoke to her and she basically said yes it is against school rules to one, damage your own or other people property 2: To not wear the school badge and for the year 7s to not have their blazers done up. Yet she resolved to say that it?s really hard to actually stop because it is all done during break times etc. She did say that she would talk with my parents when they get back and look into the issue among years 7 and 8 particularly, and maybe have all forms in said years do uniform inspections at afternoon registration (his form tutor is also year of head). It sounds like she is going to get to the bottom of it find the ring leaders if any and stamp this out or try to anyway as I suspected she initially took a tone that suggested ?This is a comprehensive it?s what they all do?. As for my brother she said she will look into the issue see how wide spread it is and then consider if any sanction against all involved in this ?game? needs to happen but she understood this was his first day and I and our parents when they get back will be mortified.

Its worth speaking to the school about it. My DD complained of being threatened by an older girl. I got straight on to the school and it was dealt with. The girl did have another go at DD, just name calling but DD was told to tell an adult if anything happened, so she did! Not sure they literally want everything reported, but they did tell her if anything happens lol

Hope your brother's school are quick at sorting it out. Even if you don't get to the bottom of this incident, you can prevent it from happening further.

Help needed again from TheCheeseAlarm or dinosaur regarding geography homework.
DD thinks she has to cut out a photo, give it a title and name the features. I'm not convinced she has got that right, but could of course be wrong. Do your DC have similar H/W?

Hope you have enjoyed the weekend and are feeling all refreshed for the week ahead Smile

Oh thanks Pixie just a concerned one it?s just a bad turn of events how he was ill and parents being out of town at funeral it?s caused many headaches. I?ll give the school a call Monday and see how it goes. I know I?m most likely totally overreacting but parents sending him off on his belated first day in an immaculate uniform 6 hours or so late it?s partly trashed with no explanation, not happy what a problem has to be while I?m babysitting doesn?t it! PS: Have spoke to lil brother again on the subject all I got was along the lines of "What don't know just shut up going on ok." said very flippantly with overtones of anger! Have only mentioned it twice now since he got home friday... Sad

Hi sorry for my lack of spelling and punctuation I was actually typing this Friday night but didn?t get round to making an account and posting it but I knew here would be the place to go for advice hence the typo in my post implying it was Saturday that he had his first day of year 7! But am awake now and coffee filled thank god.
So now my parents will be staying for a few more days until mid-week (yer thanks for not telling me Shock ), I haven?t mentioned to our parents yet don?t want to upset her with worry at such a time given the nature of their trip. So maybe I?ll call the school on Monday or ask to see someone when I walk down with him trust the school will speak to me about it given the circumstances? I?m quiet mature some people say so I think I could handle it.
My hesitation would be that if this is just a ?game? that?s been going on since the start of term and he caught the tail end of it coming to the new school later than planned should I really say anything I mean would that end up getting every year 7 without buttons/badge in a heap of trouble? My brother doesn?t seem bothered but it?s just not like him at all he always took pride in himself in primary school. As I said I?d call my mum but I don?t think it?s right to brother her right now unless it?s an emergency? I know Mum would be horrified to think something like this goes on to new intake at the school (I went to a grammar so stuff like this didn?t happen), brother is at the local comp so I?m just not sure if it?s even an issue to the school to be made a deal out of or its just what happends. It?s just I got bullied a lot in secondary I just don?t want him getting bullied too. As I said not like him to just shrug his shoulders and not give a proper answer? I?ll talk with him again see what he says?. He?s going to have to explain it all at the latest when parents get back anyway.

Caoimhe · 19/09/2010 10:41

Agree with Pixie - you really should let the school know - it sounds like a horrible way to begin a new school.

Watersports was good, SoupDragon - the only downside was that when they got back to the changing rooms some boys' clothes were on the floor!

So far ds has not managed to remember to check the lesson schedule at all so not a wonderful beginning!!!!

Well its other year 7s and 8s doing it by the sounds of it so not like year 11s I dont think. Its all new to me because it just didnt happen to me we were in a different area back then and if i may say so wouldnt have dreamed of breaking the rules in my first few days or even year. Mabye times change quicky too. I just dont get how the coversation goes is it a more "do you want your badge ripping off" or "where ripping your badge off"? Just hate to think he was being forced into it or somthing it just never happend to me and im not that old! Really worried!

His badge is slightly coming off im really not sure if this is bullying or just what they do at the school like a culture thing?

kid · 18/09/2010 22:57

Could it be the buttons were very tight and managed to come off?
Is there any sign of any damage to the blazer other than the missing buttons?

Lee2010 · 18/09/2010 21:58

Hi, first off I?ll say I?m not a mum but a concerned older brother who is now 19, my little brother has just started year 7 all be it a little late due to an illness, our parents are currently out of the area as of this afternoon until Monday to attend a funeral so I?m babysitting. Any way my brother has literally just started year 7 today (parents saw him off this morning). Talk about a hectic day but sadly things coincided.
My reason for posting is this brother on his first day has come home with no blazer buttons what so ever. I asked him about it he just said ?dun no? could he be getting bullied or have all the kids just got the idea from somewhere is it just like the ?tie tagging? initiation thing but worse? He?s so well behaved normally to do something like that to his blazer if he doesn?t tell me should I be calling parents to have a word with him? Or am I just overreacting just have no idea why he would do this or why anyone would pull them, off his blazer?

SoupDragon · 18/09/2010 20:32

oh yes, the instrument lessons... I have discovered that DS needs to check the provisional timetable on a Thursday and advise them of any problems before the final is published on the web site on Friday. I can see this going horribly ŵrong....

How was the watersports?

Re HW, I'm trying to get DS into the routine where it's all done by the weekend, or at the latest Saturday morning so he can chill on Sunday.

Caoimhe · 18/09/2010 18:48

Well done to Master Dragon! Ds had no homework as he was doing sporty things all day yesterday so it was all set on previous days! We are struggling, though, with fitting in music (and trying to remember when his instrument lessons are!!).

Haven't heard too many complaints about swearing yet but it is fairly standard amongst teenagers!

SoupDragon · 18/09/2010 18:36

Swearing was like punctuation when i was at secondary too. I f-ing grew out of it :)

all HW done in the Dragon household.

hi. has anyone's child commented on the amount of swearing at their new secondary school? my ds is a very young yr 7 being an august born, and is rather sensitive and hates all the swearing he hears everyday. but is swearing just something teenagers do - or can schools squash it do you think? ds said the f word was just like a describing word at school...though not used by the teachers I might add!

kid · 17/09/2010 22:33

I found out off DD tonight that a couple of older girls came up to her yesterday at lunchtime. They asked if she was X's cousin. She told them she was so they said they will look after her and that if she needs or wants anything, just ask them. She felt really happy to know someone was there for her. That morning she had been crying about going to school. She insisted that there must be something wrong with her because she was bullied at primary school and now secondary school Sad

The girl that threatened her on Wednesday came up to her again today and called her a coward. I assume that was for telling the teacher. DD went and told the teacher that too which personally, I think was the wrong move. No point in going on about it though as its done now.

DD didn't finish her History homework. We did one very good timeline and picked 2 more events to do a timeline on but just didn't do them. DD went in today and told the teacher she hadn't finished them and she was half expecting a telling off. Her teacher's response was 'Don't worry sweetheart' DD loves her! lol

I think thats all we have to report for this week. Hope you all enjoy the weekend, get plenty of rest and make sure you don't leave any homework till Sunday night!
