And if so is it indoor or outdoor?

Most of the local school have swimming pools except one, which is now having a brand new school built and they haven't including a swimming pool, which is a shame.

notagrannyyet · 01/10/2009 10:07

I think all local secondaries have indoor pools. None of the primary schools have.

MrsMorgan · 01/10/2009 10:05

Yes indoor pool, state secondary.

notagrannyyet · 01/10/2009 10:04

My DS school as a pool.

Many years ago DH remembers all the fund raising to build it whilst he was a pupil.

By the time I was there (5 years later) they were collecting money to put a roof on it. Money was raise by local community but also by sponsored walks....20 miles and compulsory for every pupil! Every one had to get as many sponsors as possible. Mum and dad had 3 of us at the school so we were sent knocking on neighbours doors for sponsorship . They wouldn't get away with that now days.

It remained an outdoor pool for me and my siblings but our DC now use the same indoor pool. Only problem is it's not really deep enough for proper swimming, life saving etc. Mine have to use pools in town for that.

DS1 private school - no
DS2 state school - yes
DD private school - no .

(although she is still in junior bit)

BarkisIsWilling · 30/09/2009 15:23

Oh & only a local boys' high school has a pool here. I think they share it with other catholic schools or something.

BarkisIsWilling · 30/09/2009 15:20

One of the reasons I chose the primary school we use is because it so close to Streatham Leisure Centre, and the children have a minimum of 6 weeks swimming instruction when they get to year 3. But not in year 4.

No idea why that is.

Why did you want to know, LadyMuck?

thirtysomething · 30/09/2009 08:59

Yes, an indoor pool - boys' private secondary. Not a lovely pool though!

BonsoirAnna · 30/09/2009 08:56

I think school accommodation doesn't seem to be quite as restricted outside Paris/Ile-de-France.

They are currently pulling down the Lycée Carnot (which looked just like a prison) and we are waiting with bated breath to see what monstrosity architectural gem replaces it.

castille · 30/09/2009 08:52

No pools here in France, but DD1's first (state) primary school in the UK had an indoor pool - they all learnt to swim in Reception.

(But both my DCs schools have assembly halls, Anna).

Docbunches · 30/09/2009 08:48

My DCs' old primary didn't have a pool, but they used to be taken for lessons occasionally at the local leisure centre about 20 mins walk away.

My DCs' state comp does not have a pool either, but I don't think it's so important as most can swim by then. My old secondary had a pool where swimming was part of PE lessons, but most of the girls would say they had their period just to get out of it -it'd be the same now, I think.

PestoLovelyMonster · 30/09/2009 08:15

No

BonsoirAnna · 30/09/2009 08:10

Ha ha ha ha ha.

A French school with a swimming pool?! An assembly hall would be a fine thing...

cory · 30/09/2009 08:07

No, most state schools don't around here. But they did have swimming lessons in primary.

Milliways · 29/09/2009 19:21

Yes, indoor (State Grammar)

DD's Comp did not though.

mimsum · 29/09/2009 19:11

ds1 - private secondary - state of the art indoor pool

ds2 and dd - state primary - tiny (10m) indoor pool which is only used for KS1 children to do very basic water confidence. KS2 children go to local council pool once a week for half the year

BertieBotts · 29/09/2009 18:39

My old school doesn't (DP's sister still goes there so I know) and they don't do swimming at any council pools. I think it's quite unusual to do any swimming at secondary TBH - perhaps the period issue for the girls? I know I would have been anxious about that since I did not use tampons as a teenager.

I never learned to swim at school though and taught myself aged 18 when I left so it probably is a bad thing.

MollieO · 29/09/2009 18:36

Yes outdoor, never used. Boys bused to indoor pool at connected girls' school but only for 6 weeks of summer term .

vinblanc · 29/09/2009 18:36

Neither of the secondary schools my DCs attend have pools. The child that does swimming at school goes to the local leisure centre, as do primary pupils.

LynetteScavo · 29/09/2009 18:35

No, none of the state schools in our town do (althoguh I think the girls grammar migh, but my DD is only 4, so I haven't checked)

TheBolter · 29/09/2009 18:34

I meant middle rather than secondary - sorry I get confused having never had experience of a two-tier system.

TheBolter · 29/09/2009 18:33

Yes. We're in a three-tier system and the primary, the secondary and the comp all have pools. The primary an outdoor, the comp an indoor and I'm not yet sure about the secondary, but I know it has one of some kind.

Yes private indoor pool

FimboFortunaFeet · 29/09/2009 16:29

Our junior school does, which is used by various organisations after school and on Saturdays.

DD's High School does not have a pool.
