Got half-day sanction due to using a mobile phone at Hockerill school, BS. Kid can't join the lesson. Wastes time! The school should do it after school1.

It’s meant to be a punishment for the child, not the teacher. Maybe if they value lessons, they shouldn’t break the rules? Just a thought.

trusztee · 14/10/2026 16:49

At my school the phone would be confiscated until the parent could come in to collect it. Would you prefer that @Redapple1 ?

APurpleSquirrel · 14/10/2026 12:41

What was so important/urgent that your child needed to use their phone during the school day?

FiningNemo · 14/10/2026 11:53

Excellent schools can still get things wrong. The child should not have used their phone, the school could use an appropriate sanction.

Seems absolutely fine to me.

Hockerill is an excellent school - if you don’t like it, there would be many others happy to take the place.

Schools are now required by law to prohibit the use of mobile phones during school hours other than in specific circumstances. A half day internal isolation is an increasingly common sanction for a pupil using a mobile phone during lessons. This involves placing the pupil in a dedicated, supervised room to complete their schoolwork independently. The school can also confiscate the phone.

The solution if you don't like the punishment is simple. Don't use a mobile phone during lessons.

The teacher should have to stay and increase their workload after school finishes, just so your child doesn’t miss out on lessons that they were disrupting for everyone else because of mobile phone use?

FiningNemo · 14/10/2026 03:27

Do you mean they’ve lost half a day of lessons? That is an odd sanction for that. Phone confiscation and detention makes much more sense. Obviously your child shouldn’t be using their phone, but I don’t think you’re questioning the school giving a sanction, just they type of sanction - is that right? If so, I agree with you. It’s much easier to support schools when their sanctions make sense.

Take their phone away and ground them. It must be so annoying having such a badly behaved child. It certainly will be for the staff. Hopefully with the school’s help, you can redirect them to better behaviour.

lol. Love this.

FGS how difficult can it be! Just don't bloody use the phone during school time and you as a parent should support this. And you wonder where the snowflake generation come from, soon we will be hearing the drip sob feed why this child just had to make a phone call or text

FAFO

And if they had been given an after school detention you would be complaining that they had missed the bus home/been late for something/ shouldn’t be kept after school had finished! They broke the rules and were given the consequences, tell them not to do it again!

NorthEastNancy · 04/10/2026 23:33

Afters school detentions are a pain to staff

Tell your kid to follow the rules.

ShouldBeSeenNotHeard · 04/10/2026 23:31

Are you the kid or the parent? I honestly can’t tell.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 04/10/2026 23:29

All schools have sanctions of some sort now that mobile phone bans are basically mandatory in state schools

I'm pretty sure the school would have written to you to explain the new policy so I don't see what you are complaining about tbh

AGlessandahalf · 04/10/2026 23:27

What are you doing to help school enforce the mobile phone ban OP?

noblegiraffe · 04/10/2026 23:23

Or, and hear me out on this, the kid could not use their mobile phone?

Redapple1 · 04/10/2026 23:22

too harsh!
