We can use this thread to continue our discussions for now.

Actually I think it's good that they put PE or games in but I don't think they do at Dd's school. Young women particularly stop doing exercise at this age so I'd like them to have a bit of an incentive to keep going.Dd has said she'll miss core PE so is looking to take up something else. It's important to have a break from work.

Littletreefrog · 30/08/2026 18:31

I find it really odd they are timetabling PE/games for A level students. I think by that age they should be free to choose to participate in sports/exercise or not as the case may be. The time spent doing that could be spent studying for their A levels or working etc how do your young people feel about it?

Tebheag · 30/08/2026 18:12

DD will not get her time table till Wednesday first day back. All we know is she has an hr of PE a week.

Hope all kids who went to festivals are having a great time despite the weather.

makemineadecaf · 30/08/2026 18:00

Dd also has to start with four alevels, plus epq time, sport afternoon, pshe/careers. There’s currently 4 x 45mins of free periods but it’s a packed week!

She’s doing 4 A levels. There’s also Games afternoon for 2 periods and Life Education for 2 periods. Assembly and registration every day too.

Oh, I’m being stupid!! I read it wrong. Not all periods are on her timetable, only periods where she has a lesson. So on some days she jumps from period 2 to period 5. So she does have free periods!

Franpie · 30/08/2026 17:15

ifonlytheydlisten · 30/08/2026 17:10

@Franpie so that’s 4x 1 hour 10 min per subject? What else fills her timetable?

Just checked DD’s timetable and she has 8 periods per subject per week. Each period is 35mins long so 280mins per subject per week.

No free periods at all which I’m quite surprised about. Free periods were the best thing about 6th form for me!

tourdefrance · 30/08/2026 16:24

Same here (autistic son, needs clear guidance). If he's set specific tasks he will do them. 'Go and find out about ...' is very challenging.

Walkingbkwrm · 30/08/2026 14:17

Don’t have DS1’s timetable yet but we have been told 8 hours a fortnight here - doesn’t seem like much tbh! Anyone know where the “as much out of school too” guideline comes from? We have heard this too but wondering if 4 hours will be enough (since he has less lessons?) don’t want to overload him but he works best with clear guidelines/ expectations rather than trying to work out if he’s done enough himself ifyswim. More may be too ambitious though to start with as his school promotes starting with four courses and then dropping one option. Plus they do a skills challenge certificate too. I just don’t want him to fall behind though :(.
Can’t believe the summer off nagging will be over in 3 days! And yes I know in theory I should be able to leave him to it by now but he’s autistic so that will not happen yet. His brother’s starting GCSES this year too…I may need lots of chocolate!

waitingquietly · 30/08/2026 13:19

My yr13 had an hour per subject per day - so sounds about the same

ifonlytheydlisten · 30/08/2026 11:26

4-5 hours teaching is normsl
per A level plus they are expected to do same themselves independently

makemineadecaf · 30/08/2026 10:36

typo! Dd has 5.5 hours a week

tourdefrance · 30/08/2026 10:31

A Levels require 360 guided learning hours across the 2 years, so it should be the same amount per week on average across settings (some may have a fortnightly timetable).

makemineadecaf · 30/08/2026 07:46

Morning all…
For those who have had timetables already, how many hours per subject per week do they have? It seems Dd has 4.5 hours lesson time for academic subjects and 1.5hr per week for EPQ. School sixth form.

Interested to hear what the norm is.

DS is doing a T level and has 20.5 hours teaching and it's meant to be equivalent 3 A levels so if you go on that basis it's 6hr something if divided by 3. No idea yet how placement fits into that but I guess they don't start that straight away.

Curlyfrizzball · 30/08/2026 09:47

DD isn’t doing ALevels but shes doing an extended diploma worth three Alevels and has 16 hours teaching time. 4.5 hours per subject is what the other college said they would get per ALevel but I’m sure it must vary a bit.

@Drivingselfmad when do you find the time once term starts? Is that fairly normal or not at all?

Not sure if it’s normal - I’ve only worked at my school! The first few days are quieter with inset and tiered return of students, so it’s ok. It takes around 1-2 hours to look through the grades, and most of them won’t ring any alarm bells. We’ll recall some with the students’ consent. Then with an experienced departmental team including several examiners, we can collaborate on looking through those papers together. So yes it’s another task to add to the many! But logistically it would be harder to do it in the holidays/from home. We’ve been told mid September is the deadline for recalling scripts.

Drivingselfmad · 27/08/2026 20:18

When I get back to work next week, I’ll be asked to look through all my students’ grades (60 of them) and flag any that don’t look right or are close to the boundary. Then we’ll recall papers and begin the review process for quite a few of them.

I don’t/the department doesn’t have the capacity to do that during the summer hols in any kind of large scale or organised way. We’ve dealt with a few cases already on our own time where parents have been in touch, but it’s much better to do it when teachers have the headspace and can review papers together.

It’s agonising to have to wait, but as others have said, there is still time, and it’s much better to do it properly.

Anonymousemouses · 27/08/2026 20:08

Thank you both Flowers

Stowickthevast · 27/08/2026 18:09

I think the deadline is the 23 September so you have some time @Anonymousemouses.

MrsHamlet · 27/08/2026 18:09

Anonymousemouses · 27/08/2026 17:39

How urgently do you need to apply for a review of the grades?

DD was one mark away from the next grade in Engineering, she is not interested in pursuing it, but I think it is, as one mark 'may' be found, which will lift her grade.

The phonelines are unmanned at her school, due to the holiday, and I only realised she was one mark away the other day.

The deadline is mid September. There's no rush.

But she has to consent to the review.

We are not far from Reading - it’s currently beautiful sunshine ( forecast was rain )

DS2 is meant to be going daily with friends but is having doubts ( not at all unexpected )
