All the best to anyone’s DC taking Edexcel German with the writing paper tomorrow. Use any spare time to check your verbs are correct!

fruitypancake · 31/05/2026 20:52

Here we go again … DS has enjoyed the break but has definitely lost motivation 🥹

whereonthestair · 31/05/2026 20:48

Good luck to everyone who has an exam tomorrow. We don’t start again until physics but then have both wed and Thurs with two exams on. However DS has been over all of history and most of geography in half term so content heavy exams seem more covered now… I can’t wait until this is over and it no longer feels so far away. DS has been thinking about what to do in summer which is great

LattePatty · 31/05/2026 20:40

Good luck to everyone. Nothing here tomorrow. Physics Tuesday.

NotDarkGothicMama · 31/05/2026 20:21

@Drivingselfmad I hope your DD is on the mend. Hayfever has kicked in here - terrible timing!

DS had a session with his tutor today in preparation for PE paper 2 tomorrow. He's been an absolute pest for his poor PE teacher this year. PE paper 1 was the last exam before half term and I had a call at 9 asking where he was and if he'd be there for the exam starting at 9.15. He'd dawdled in and was waiting outside in the late line. His teacher hauled him out and into the pre-exam room, which DS found hilarious Hmm He was planning a repeat "just to see his face" so I am personally taking him to school and frogmarching him in tomorrow. ADHD assessment is now booked and can't come soon enough.

Callmejudith · 31/05/2026 20:14

Oh god here we go again!! DS currently fixing his PS controller. No revision to be seen.

FlyingPandas · 31/05/2026 20:08

Yes here we go again….Good luck to all DC (and parents) - will be thinking of everyone 🍀

waitingquietly · 31/05/2026 19:56

Good luck everyone the half term doesn’t feel like it’s been anywhere near long enough DS1 has his driving test this week as well

ShesRunningOutTheDoor · 31/05/2026 19:48

Yes good luck everyone. Here we go again

Onthesofawithmydog · 31/05/2026 19:43

So… last night before the next stretch. Once more unto the breach… 😆 just thankful that all our kids are one step closer to the end. Hope everyone has had a great half term and ready to tackle the next stretch. Somewhat lost some momentum in this house and when I went into dd’s room earlier she was proudly showing me the Korean she has been learning on Duolingo to support her K drama obsession 🤣 Good luck to everyone for the next couple of weeks!

Stowickthevast · 31/05/2026 13:01

Mine keeps changing her mind about her 4th A level too. She'd like to do an essay subject and does enjoy English and History, but finds science much easier to revise for. Her school does 4 for Y12 and then takes an AS in one.
She's sure about Maths and German, and thinks she'll do Biology too but the 4th could be Art, English, RE, Politics or Economics!

4 exams this week, 5 the next, 3 the following . Still so relentless.

TheBeatlesWhoarethey · 31/05/2026 10:27

Half terms feels like it has whizzed by.

Dreading next week, it’s very full on.

TheBeatlesWhoarethey · 31/05/2026 10:25

GCSEs have cemented some A level choices (DD has surprisingly enjoyed Shakespeare for English Literature), but worried her for others. She’s worried about R&P and I wonder if she would be better of thinking about something like sociology or politics. But R&P has been her strongest subject but I think the step up in philosophy will be too much for her and also possibly boring!

makemineadecaf · 31/05/2026 08:02

EducaatingRita · 30/05/2026 21:29

Same here ref History.. Think she's going to make her final A Level decisions after exam results.. Also she's going to choose 4 with potential to drop one early if she doesn't like it.

Yes that’s what DD’s school ask of them - to start with four and drop one by October half term so that they can be sure of their top three.

Dd has chosen English literature (her all time favourite), psychology, history and biology but is now only completely certain of the first two.

waitingquietly · 31/05/2026 07:39

DS2 asked me if he got a 6 in Geography could he still get a good A level - another worrying about the sheer amount of content

HaveYourPetSpeyedOrNeutered · 31/05/2026 07:01

We’re also planing just to check that DS is happy with his A level choices once the exams have finished. He thinks he probably is at the moment.

LattePatty · 30/05/2026 23:27

makemineadecaf · 30/05/2026 19:21

Have any of your kids started rethinking alevel choices having been through the revision now? Dd has put history as a choice but she’s now thinking with the amount of content at gcse, alevel is going to be insane!!

Yes. Son was planning English literature (I was surprised) but said after the exam he wasn’t sure. I’ve said not to think about making any decisions until the exams are over.

@somethingerudite and anyone I am more than happy to look at an essay example for French or German (German only relevant if taking Edexcel and the exam is on Monday! so a bit last-ditch haha) and give some feedback as I know the specs pretty well. Sometimes it's hard for the candidate to see. Feel free to PM me.

My best best piece of MFL writing exam advice is this:

If you are thinking "hmmm I want to say xyz but I don't know how to say that in German" – stop right there. Ditch that idea. What do you know how to say? Say that.

So if you are thinking "Last night I went to my T'ai Chi class and next week I am going to visit my friend" but you are struggling for "T'ai Chi class" and "visit" then say "Last night I played tennis and next week I am going to go swimming". No one, especially not the examiner, will know or care that you can't swim and never play tennis.

Edited

My kids have each done a foreign language at gcse, I occassionally test them and learn about all sorts of musical instruments they play and hobbies I never knew about! 😉

Did I spot that there are some MFL teachers on this thread? Can I ask a niche question about the French writing paper (Edexcel, in case it makes a difference) - my son usually writes much more than the required 80-90 words and 130-150 words. Neither of us can figure out if this a good thing or a bad thing, and the mark scheme doesn't really give me much of a clue. On the one hand, there's more opportunity to develop his ideas and use more complex structures, and on the other hand, there's simply more scope for errors. Any thoughts from anyone much appreciated - should I be coaching him to be more concise and try and fit the more complex stuff into less words, which he might find quite a challenge? Timing never appears to be an issue, he always has tonnes of time left over.

@somethingerudite the examiner will mark what is written, whether that is more or less that advised. In fact the MS is very clear that even if for the longer essay, the candidate writes less than 130 words, there will be no penalty for that. The thing is that if they write a lot less, then they are less likely to be able to hit the targets for communication (covering all bullet points, using complex language as you say). If they write more, then yes, and IME very much so, errors start to creep in.

Are his practice essays totally error-free? If not, then a better use of his time would be to correct them rather than writing more. For sure there are no extra marks for writing more; and he absolutely can get all the marks (in terms of scope for developed ideas, use of tenses) by writing the number of words requested. If he has tonnes of time left over btw that's a bit of a concern. The paper is only 80 mins – what do you mean by tonnes? As I say, a good use of time is to check his work – common mistakes include incorrect tense formation, incorrect person (Elle suis allée), use of infinitive instead of conjugated verb, mother-tongue interference and not knowing the right vocab. Gender, accents and adjective agreements are minor errors (tho obvs still best avoided).

Here's a screenshot of the relevant element of the MS:

Thank you so much @clary I had read through the mark scheme but your comments have helped me conclude that he’s better off planning more carefully and writing less. He currently spends a good amount of time planning but mostly focused on content and tense coverage rather than structure per se. He is a fast and confident writer but I totally agree extra time should be used for checking. He knows what he should be looking for but seems to have some kind of mental block in terms of seeing agreements and the like. I will report all this as your advice not mine and maybe that will sink in more!

Not sure DD has valued the week off although she did need to rest. As she put it 'I've had a taste of the good life and now I want it'!
She has RE Monday, then Physics, Maths, Geography and Eng Lang with shirt signing that afternoon. Big week. Not sure I'm ready for the end!

History and geography has taken up all the revision time this half term. They are so content heavy! He hasn’t looked at physics (Tuesday) or PE (Monday) yet! I think he’s feeling fed up

Dd doing History and Geography too, a heavy workload!
