The hysteria or the outrage of people who found out late KS is a con?

Edited

Do you even understand the post you were replying too?

The change to 30 to 40 years, the lowering and then freezing of thresholds..... all under a Tory Govt.... yet not a dickybird from you or other Tory supporting posters.

As far as i'm concerned, further education "should" be cheap and available to all, as it is in the EU.

Labour also said v little about Uni education in their manifesto and as no one wants tax rises, even for the v wealthy 'cause they'll leave.... then they had no choice but to increase them.

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2024 17:29

Yes my children know and one has already left. Of his own accord.

PinkFrogss · 04/11/2024 17:29

Just went and counted quickly and over a third of the posts on this thread are yours @Araminta1003 with various incorrect ramblings about tax and mortgages, and your plans to ship your children off to Europe.

I hope your children don’t pick up on your anxieties for them and genuinely think they have no chance of a good life in the UK - no opportunity to buy a house etc if they stay, and feel forced out because of your own wishes and obsession.

They haven’t raised it by enough. Only 2.7%. When it’s been frozen for eight years and unis are saying they’re making a 4k loss per student each year on some courses. This rise will increase fees to about 9.5k a year.

Yes I think this is right. Plus the NI changes from the budget will have a huge impact on university finances (will it even be offset by this?). It's a bit worrying that the narriative from ministers on the news is 'now universities are getting more we expect more from them'. The reality is that universities are getting much less than they were in real terms and this probably won't even meet inflation + NI for this year.

Look 9 per cent extra tax means you won’t get a mortgage! So no hope of getting on the housing ladder even for higher earners. Anyone considered that? How is the next generation going to have children?

For someone who has posted a lot of this thread and is clearly passionate about the topic you are sadly misinformed.

Do you genuinely think people with student loans are unable to get a mortgage?

And your reference to 49% tax etc is ridiculous. It’s 0% on some earnings, 20% on some, 29% on some, and then 49% on the top bit. It’s not 49% on everything so not a 49% tax in any shape. There’s absolutely no guarantee your children will be such high earners anyway.

Do your children know of your potential future plans to ship them off to another country? Emigration is a big thing and many young adults wouldn’t want to move countries.

No, Lib Dem supporter.

Ahhh yes. The party that famously promised not to raise tuition fees in the coalition years.

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2024 17:22

4DC here. It’s extortionate for us but free elsewhere. They are all high achievers. Other countries will be happy to have them and the U.K. brings down its net migration figures. You should all be happy.

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2024 17:19

I have fully understood and don’t feel comfortable with my DCs being in so much debt. So uni in Europe it will be for us. For free. Maintenance they expect us to fund anyway.

You’re hysterical, calm down.

And I take you don’t realise the 9% ‘tax’ is 9% ‘tax’ over the threshold not 9% of income?

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2024 17:08

I understand unis need fees to go up but don’t they also need students in the first place? So if students are not going to go in the first place will that actually help unis?

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2024 17:06

9% extra tax plus childcare costs in the future plus mortgage won’t affect that generation? I doubt it.

Blimey - its worse at Exeter

Exeter's Vice-Chancellor earned the largest sum at £584,000.

Agree it's a lot - but Exeter has an income of £3/4 billion - the VC's salary is 0.0008% of that. And they are one of the most successful unis in the UK.

Or shouldn't we reward success? Seems to be a funny British thing somehow - resenting success.

The student loan repayments are a drain but don't prevent you getting a mortgage.
Hasn't affected my DC who both bought houses in their mid 20s, both earn mid range salaries but don't live in the SE. Both pay a sizeable chunk of SL each month at 9%. One if not both will repay the loan just short of the term.

Labour are meant to be better for the young than the Tories!

Aren’t you a Tory supporter? I seem to recall your threads before.

At leat you admit the previous government are worse I suppose.

Eh? There's no change in the 9%. Do you really think no one who graduated in the last 12 years will be able to get a mortgage?

Thank fuck fees are finally going up is all I can say. It isn't by enough though, and will be too late for some unis.

Sounds like an old fashioned incentive to make all parents who have any cash pay for their DCs uni so the Government does not have to incur any debt on their behalf.

The greedy universities and the failing ones need to sort themselves out. Vice Chancellor in my DS one was paid over £450k plus grace and favour house.

Araminta1003 · 04/11/2024 16:50

How is this going to mean more students go to uni? Really? How is this going to help the uni sector? Numbers of students going was already going down long term? So their answer is: what the Tories did is worse aka 40 year loans but don’t worry, it will only affect you IF you do well. What a con!

Martin Lewis has just released some info on this on his Facebook channel just to calm any hysteria. Only those that pay it all back will be affected. Otherwise there is no change to students - it’s 9% of your salary over the threshold for 40 years regardless. He pointed out that the previous governments policy of moving from 30 to 40 years for repayment was much more impactful.
