Friend won appeal based on lie

Just found out a friend has won her appeal based on a lie.

For admission to church of England school, it's church attendance every 2 weeks for over 2 years, friend was awarded 25 points when minimum or last child admitted received 30 points. Friend has got member of the catholic church to write a supporting letter stating church attendance was over 2 years. When it wasn't.

I'm just stunned..this isn't the person I know, lying like this. It means someone else's child won't get a place, as it was oversubscribed..

No, the priest signed the initial letter saying they attended church from September 2020 (different priest was there), church was closed because of covid and they didn't start attending until September 2022 and they applied 2023

I am sceptical this happened, but if it did it would be easy enough to report the priest to the church in question.

Someone at a church was prepared to put a lie in writing? Why would they do that?

The church is full of liars.

theuniverseisworking · 19/06/2024 23:05

Forget about it.
There are much worse things going on in the world than this.

TheCultureHusks · 19/06/2024 22:57

Send in a letter saying that you have evidence that she walks with Satan. And doesn’t recycle as a result of this.

Namechangencncnc · 19/06/2024 22:57

Unless this exact scenario has happened elsewhere, then I have also heard this same scenario today.
Shame for all the other appeals who didn't get the place as there had to be a cut off somewhere.

JanglyBeads · 19/06/2024 22:54

@S0livagant CofE primary schools are usually different, and don't have any faith based entry criteria.

Thinking about it, I don't know why but it must be to do with catchment areas being much wider for secondaries or something.

jam2day · 19/06/2024 22:48

@Cartwrightandson for what it's worth, it's probably not unusual for people to win appeals based on lies. I represent my school at appeals. One parent who recently won an appeal told the panel that all of her daughter's vitally supportive friendship group would be coming to our school. She must have told another school the same thing because she won appeals at both, and then accepted the other one.

Once an appeal panel has been persuaded, the only thing a school can do to overturn the decision is to request a very expensive and time consuming judicial review..So it's unlikely to be challenged.

Motheranddaughter · 19/06/2024 22:44

Am not sure WTF it has got to do with you

fashionqueen0123 · 19/06/2024 22:39

Why did this win the appeal? Did she not have this document before?

jam2day · 19/06/2024 22:39

SueSheeMee · 19/06/2024 18:35

I know that it's not the point but they won't take a place away from someone who's already been offered the place, they will admit this child over the PAN. It's still not right though. IMO it's the church to blame here. The appeal panel can only act on the evidence they're given.

Yes they will. Schools only go over numbers temporarily. The next person who gives up an offer (or a place after term starts) won't be replaced, so that the cohort size drops back to PAN. That means the person at the top of the waiting list won't get an offer.

UnpackingBooksFromBoxes · 19/06/2024 22:23

You have two choices, tell the school or don’t tell the school.

Did you want your child to go there?

S0livagant · 19/06/2024 22:21

I didn't know CofE schools did this. Many villages the CofE is the local school, are non church attending families forced to go elsewhere if the school is oversubscribed?

Shrugsandruns · 19/06/2024 22:15

It’s almost like….perhaps….we shouldn’t have discriminatory religion based schools isn’t it

BrownFlowerCarpet · 19/06/2024 22:13

I am smiling at this
My DC started a C of E school almost 18 years ago
There were loads of Catholic children who didnt get a place at the co-located Catholic school but got one at the C of E (which was actually harder to get in to) because the priest had to be honest when completing the catholic attendance but could be more flexible when doing the the C of E one!

positivewings · 19/06/2024 21:43

Nothing to do with you sorry op get on with your own life.
No ones going to hell over a form for a school.

You get your own priest to do the reference.

Many CofE schools treat all Churches Together applicants on an equal footing, so there's nothing unusual about RC references in those circs

Thank you! I just did not get it 👍

EmpressOfTheThread · 19/06/2024 19:28

Yes, but if you were going for a C of E school, and you weren't religious, surely you'd get a C of E vicar to act as a referee?

If the priest signed a SIF stating attendance since 2020, and that was the "initial letter" (SIF?) and that was submitted on time, then I don't quite follow on what grounds they appealed.

Attended a Catholic Church, then.
You've not explained why they'd do that for a C of E school, as I asked upthread?

I don't know why he has chosen to do this when there is a local catholic high school in the nearest city...but he has

Cof E schools often give priority to other religions as well (so CofE, then other Christian, then other faiths).

They've aced immorally. Probably impossible to prove though.

Why would the RC cleric write in support of a C of E school? Confused!

Exactly.

Champere · 19/06/2024 19:13

They haven’t taken someone else’s place. Appeals are heard on their own merit.

TeenLifeMum · 19/06/2024 18:53

Cartwrightandson · 19/06/2024 18:52

They did not attend online or in person until September 2022

Edited

You said sept 22? Now you’re saying 2023. That’s still a year enduring Catholic services 🤷🏻‍♀️
