How is everyone feeling about the fact that we find out tomorrow which secondary school our Year 6 children will be going to?

I am wondering whether to stay up till midnight to wait for the email 🙈

Are “feeder” schools an actual thing or is it just a way of describing when both a primary and secondary are in the same catchment

people tell me that our primary is a “feeder” for the local secondary but that term is not used in any of the council literature. “Feeder” suggests that everyone from the primary gets a place at the secondary but of course it’s not that straightforward

Yes.

The town my dad lives in the RC has a number of 'feeder' schools, all RC of course. One of the feeder schools is in another town 7-8 miles away that doesn't have an RC secondary.

We have friends about to turn a grammar place down in favour of a private school. It does happen. People also relocate. Keep the faith.

Thank you - really appreciate that. We've been given a second choice that is OK but I'm now panicking that I should have put down as a second choice a school that more of DS' friends are going to. Argh

I think it's possible to email the council and ask to be put on waiting lists for schools not applied for or further down the preference list

CheesecakeandCrackers · 01/03/2024 02:27

Got our offer, none of our choices nor catchment. School offered is slightly further but not any worse really than catchment and potentially better as it has a bus. I am waiting for my Y6 to wake to see how he feels. 90% of his year will be in his first choice school so I'm expecting disappointment sadly. If I want to put him on the wait list for another school does anyone know how I do that?

Got a waitlist for grammar so going to not such a good school for now. It was a e mail and the portal isn't showing an offer so must take time to update. My son had 3 yeses for his application so a shock and not looking forward to telling him so struggling to get back to sleep 😭 Good luck everyone.

We're in exactly the same position. Sending you some very positive vibes. Off to phone the grammar later this morning to see if I can get an idea about waiting list. We have quite a unique circumstance which means that DS should be top of the waiting list or very near the top but does anyone turn down a place at a grammar school - I'm thinking not Confused

2nd choice here. Son is going to be very upset in the morning ☹️

elliejjtiny · 01/03/2024 01:19

Ds4 has an ehcp so we found out during half term. We asked for our catchment school and the senco said that they could accommodate him but they needed more funding. L.A. have us the school we wanted but not the extra money. Kind of wishing we had asked for the lovely SEN school and then the LA might have been willing to compromise by giving us the catchment school with the extra money.

40andfeelingit · 01/03/2024 00:57

Checked the portal at midnight, took an age to get in but we got first choice.
And that pretty much means child no 2 is in next year.
Feeling very relieved

ThemysteriousH · 01/03/2024 00:51

I’ve stayed up and no email, rural wales, I only put one school and out of the catchment.

Quite complicated, parents have parental rights of DS1 also (MH post partum hospital stay).
The school is closer to them but also a smaller school with better needs for his circumstances- he too struggles socially/emotionally.
School in our catchment is literally 10x the size & a very bad rep. We live in a “rough” area.

Im also in and out of hospital a lot so whilst there is buses from parents to the school we’ve picked, there isn’t one coming to the town I live in.

Basically it’s complicated and really need this choice but it’s a long shot.

FairfaxHigh · 01/03/2024 00:46

Ours went on the portal at exactly midnight. Got our 1st choice- knew very likely due to sibling, but still had The Fear that I'd messed up the application somehow!

Good luck everyone.

EricaJohns · 01/03/2024 00:45

Email arrived, got 1st choice, relieved.

Now I have to contact the school to organise starting in September. Seems so far away, but it'll be here in the blink of an eye. 😁

Widgets · 01/03/2024 00:35

Same here no email yet but the online portal showed the offered place. Thankfully we got our first choice.

Mummyratbag · 01/03/2024 00:28

I haven't got an email - but went to portal at 12.04 and it said we got 1st choice (which I wasn't really expecting) - good luck to everyone!

TheHennaHairedHarridan · 29/02/2024 23:00

We only have three options! I would be happy with any of the three tbh.

And no portal, we have to wait for an email.

Goldwakeme · 29/02/2024 22:55

CheesecakeandCrackers · 29/02/2024 20:59

I feel sick. We have 3 options and I've not put our catchment school down. Massively worried (but had a good reason why, it's actually further and harder to get to independently than the 3 I've put down). I've been fine until we got this close and now I'm scared we won't get anywhere at all not even catchment. I am told they usially arrive by 8ish round here but I can't see me sleeping

I did this too. I'm either going to be thrilled or kicking myself but too late now! Good luck!

It’s because I live in a densely populated area. We don’t have “catchment areas” - priority is based on LAC, children of teachers, siblings and then finally distance. 3 years ago when I applied for my daughter, my son would have got into our 1st choice which is also the closest secondary my son could go to (our closest is all girls which is where his sister is) but the year we applied there were more applications closer to the school and we missed out, so ended up in our 4th closest school (we put them in order of distance). All his friends got the closest one as they either had siblings there or EHCPs (which trump all criteria if said school is named on it).
It is such a stupid system - because of where the schools are located there are children who live on the doorstep of my son’s school who go to our nearest school because they live closer to it as the crow flies than we do. Doesn’t matter that we are now forced into a car every morning to get him to school.

That is what we will be doing. I live on the doorstep of the school that I even didn't apply to. But thank God here in London we have catchments and a wide choice of options

That's interesting @LilySLE - I suppose I had assumed it was the same everywhere. Four doesn't seem many.

Worrying about the baby boom thing now. It's definitely the case in our area, but I thought last academic year was the peak. I hope we at least get our banker.

I have logged into the portal about 5 times today despite knowing it will probably be tomorrow evening.

I keep refreshing the portal too in hopes that their IT system makes a mistake and puts it live early 🙈😂

This was in active - so not waiting this year but just wanted to say good luck everyone - I remember the night before well.

DD is yr8 now. She showed me the headteacher video this evening for the new starters that was filmed today to send tomorrow.

Fwiw - Dd had a friend who got 1 school on offer day, went to a 2nd for a transition day, and started at a 3rd in Sept and is doing brilliantly - tomorrow might only be the start of the journey.

What a lovely idea for the head to record a message to go out tomorrow! I want my child to go to this school!

Absolutely dreading it. Primary school allocation was awful for us, the LA email
system failed and we had to phone them. We got 3rd choice, so stressful waiting and not able to get through to them and then finding out he was 1 of 2 kids from the nursery class who didn't get a place. It did work out ok in the end.

So nervous. I just want things to go right for my DS for a change.

Spent yesterday panicking that I'd forgotten to apply or that I'd misunderstood the form and done it wrong. I've also put a school on there that I've changed my mind about, I really don't want him to go there.

I also don't know what time the email should come through. So I want to wait up until midnight but not convinced there would be any point.

I’m really tired and despite my best intentions am now doubting whether I will make it to midnight 🥴

We’re in Devon and the website says from 10am on the 1st. But when you log in to the portal, it says decisions released on the 2nd. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you check their FB page they say that the 2nd March comment is a mistake and it'll be tomorrow by 9am
