Lost GCSE Art folder Support Thread

Is my son the only one going into Yr11 having to redo his art work due to his Art folder going missing in school?

Does anyone have any words of advice, wisdom or solace? I’m feeling so sad for him because not only does he have to redo it but this will also eat into his time revising other subjects. It also means he’s not doing the new art work as school have advised him to focus on the redone work.

Wow, that’s shocking @mondaytosunday

The school lost a few of my daughter's GCSE artwork. It never left the building and she thought the cleaners might have just moved it then it got lost/thrown out. Very annoying and she had to redo them, and worse the teacher didn't think it was such a big deal!

LostArt123 · 03/09/2023 22:48

@Angrycat2768 It hasn’t turned up yet, which is why I really want to go and look for it myself - to put my mind at rest that no stone has been left unturned.

He wants to get the redo done and dusted asap so it doesn’t affect the rest of his study time.

We don’t have much hope that it’ll turn up as it happened early June so the teachers across school have ready looked for it, we’ve asked the bus companies and looked everywhere it could be at home.

Baring being down the back of a cupboard at school as @BramblyHedge‘s experience was, it’s actually vanished.

Could it turn up over the holidays once all the stuff is removed etc over the holidays? He may be able tobdonut better second time round if he's already directly it once, I suppose!

@Angrycat2768 there are a lot of TikToks on the theme of, “my Y10 self telling my Y9 self: don’t do it!” 😏

It’s a bonus when it’s all done and dusted by April Y11 though! Hope he finds it worthwhile in the end.

I bet! Apparently, that's what his whole class thinks 😄 He's wanted to be an animator since he was young and does endless detailed pen and ink illustrations, but he can't do what he likes for his GCSE!

Neither I nor his dad have very big houses and we’re both very organised so there aren’t many places it could be.

Surely it makes more sense to do the new stuff on the off-chance it shows up,

@Angrycat2768 from what I can see, there are more marks for the research and analysis of your piece (like other artist inspiration, analysing these), showing your development, working ideas through in other media, annotating all this than there are for the actual final piece that they produce.

Get him on TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest - there are loads of students presenting “my grade 8 portfolio” type videos.

I will do. The sad thing is that he has loved art since he was young, and has drawn from a very young age, but doing Art GCSE, he has lost his love of art. I've been getting him to draw for pleasure all summer to get his enthusiasm back up, but I think he's just going to have to suck it up now and knuckle down. I'll look for the YouTube videos.

“The original work was all hand drawn but the teacher has advised to do it digitally and stick it in the book.”

When I first read that, it sounded like his artwork was being re-sone digitally, which didn’t really make sense. But it sounds like it’s things like the layout of his artist research and annotation? A lot of students lay all that out by hand. If so, the quality of what he says is more important than whether he’s hand-drawn a nice title vs typed it and printed it out. So hopefully not a big impact. Lots of graded portfolio examples I’ve seen online have typed notation.

Oh that sounds much more promising! I know more about AQA (child starting Y10) but my nephew did Edexcel and it looks identical.

The 60% coursework portfolio is working on in Y10 and first term Y11 (after that, they’re into the externally set exam piece). That has one major sustained piece of work - I think most schools use that as the Y10 mock. Plus other skills work. So they portfolio (usually A3) is the one that’s annotated and will have their original work plus copies of inspiration work.

So it sounds like what is lost / stolen is the sketchbook containing his current work (possibly a smaller project) which would be transferred to his portfolio. In which case, it’s still rubbish for him but very “catch-up-able” 😀

Ok because I was confused, I’ve just double checked with him what it is he has actually lost.

So it sounds like the thing that @Testina said was 60% of the marks is something he has AT SCHOOL (not lost) 😮‍💨 😮‍💨 because it’s massive and he hasn’t brought it home since Yr 9. This is probably what I’m thinking about when I’m thinking of the stuff I want is to be able to keep after his course.

The thing he’s lost is his sketchbook and that has some other stuff that was meant to be assessed, and this is what he is redoing. He is doing it in PowerPoint to stick into a new book I think. That’s the thing which is related to this digital project. The original work was all hand drawn but the teacher has advised to do it digitally and stick it in the book. Not sure whether this will affect the grade he can achieve since it won’t be hand drawn, but the teacher can advise him on that.

So it sounds better than I thought, I think? Also, he has come back from his Dad’s this evening saying he has managed to redo 75% of it (when he left here Friday he has done about 10% in his estimation). He has spent HOURS on it over there. So impressed with his resilience.

I still don’t fully understand, so I’m hoping once he goes back on Weds and speaks to his teacher, she’ll be able to fully advise and guide him.

Edited

That sounds great. We'll done him for doing all that work. Otherwise I'm going to have to look up thecspec for Art. My DS is coasting a bit as he's good at the art side but doesn't really like all the writing about why you have chosen this artist/ mood board side so hasn't done enough of it. And he does need the art to do what he wants to do!

Also edited to make it more readable and quote the PP

Irrelevant post here, but is all the 2 years of work part of the coursework? I thought it was only the last terms work, where the exam board gives them a theme, and the rest was practice?! There is a huge amount of work for GCSE Art. Your DS has my sympathy.

Yes it is part of the result @Angrycat2768
60% of the grade comes from the personal portfolio which he was working on all last year.
40% from the externally set exam which he won’t have started.
So the missing Y10 work is a significant part of the grade.

I hope he finds it OP 😢

LostArt123 · 03/09/2023 14:55

@Angrycat2768 not irrelevant at all. I don’t really know but that’s good, if so. I think I am starting to understand that maybe he just has to redo one project. And because it was a digital project, some elements are in tact at school. However, everyone else is doing a new project (they’ve done some as homework over the summer hols) and this is the part that his teacher has advised him not to do. So I think maybe they do two projects and they choose one to submit?

The sadness is waning as I’m realising the redo isn’t as arduous as I thought. And also seeing him crack on with the redo these past 3 days - so impressed by his efforts.

But I do still feel sad we’ve lost some of his original artwork as he won’t get the same chance as everyone else to choose his best work out of the two projects and also because some of what is lost isn’t assessed, he won’t redo this and I was looking forward to keeping it for him for years to come and even displaying some of it.

Thanks for the support @madnessitellyou and @BeaLola. The email to parents could be a good shout. I think he’d probably rather redo than be so exposed though.

JanglyBeads · 03/09/2023 11:38

I'd guess you could use the photos as supporting evidence but not as the actual piece.

BeaLola · 03/09/2023 11:33

Hoping you find it . This happened at my sons school and they sent a note out to all parents about the lost work

madnessitellyou · 03/09/2023 11:14

No advice but my dd, also going into y11 is doing art and the amount of work she's done is staggering. Your poor ds having lost that Sad.

I hope something can be done.

HollyGolightly4 · 02/09/2023 23:21

@alwaysplanning your school could be a totally different exam board to the one at mine, I'm sure if they've said it, it would be ok!
